Her journey from a small village in Chalakudy, Kerala to becoming a prominent figure in healthcare leadership reflects not only her professional prowess but also her deep commitment to service and her unwavering belief in the transformative power of nursing. Dr. Kavungal’s story is one of perseverance, compassion, and an extraordinary ability to rise above challenges, creating a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals along the way.

Born in Chalakudy, Kerala, Dr. Kavungal’s early years were marked by hardship, a reality she faced head-on with the strength instilled in her by her parents. She was the second of five sisters in a family that endured its share of struggles. Her childhood experiences were shaped by both the love and adversity she encountered, particularly during the years spent in an orphanage following family separation. These formative years, filled with responsibility and hardship, fueled her desire to achieve something greater, not just for herself, but for those around her.

Despite facing personal challenges, Dr. Kavungal never lost sight of her goals. Her journey into nursing was not just a career choice; it was a calling. Motivated by her aunt, who was a hospital administrator, Dr. Kavungal saw firsthand the impact of healthcare leadership and mentorship. This exposure to hospital administration ignited a passion in her that would guide her through her career. Under the mentorship of her aunt, she saw the profound difference that strong, compassionate leadership could make in the lives of both patients and healthcare professionals. This inspiration was the spark that led Dr. Kavungal to pursue a career in nursing, and from that moment on, she was determined to lead by example, always striving for excellence in every aspect of her professional life.

Her academic journey was equally impressive. Dr. Kavungal pursued her nursing education at Medicity School of Nursing and later advanced her studies with an MSc in Medical-Surgical Nursing from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. With a thirst for knowledge and a drive to continuously improve, she furthered her expertise by pursuing an MBA in Hospital Management and specialized diplomas in Nursing and Hospital Administration. She did not stop at the academic realm—her personal growth was just as important, and she enrolled in computer programming and hardware networking courses, reflecting her belief in the importance of technology in modern healthcare.

However, Dr. Kavungal’s story isn’t just about her academic and professional accomplishments. It is also about the values that guide her every decision—values that are deeply rooted in her childhood and her sense of responsibility. Dr. Kavungal believes that true leadership comes from a place of service. She has always seen her role in healthcare not just as a position of authority but as one of stewardship. For her, leadership is about empowering others to grow and succeed. This philosophy has been the cornerstone of her approach to nursing leadership, where she has inspired countless nurses and healthcare professionals to reach their full potential.

Her career took a major turn when she moved to Saudi Arabia, where she took on the role of Nursing Director at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, one of the most prominent hospitals in the Kingdom. Here, she would go on to shape the future of nursing practice within the hospital, taking on an instrumental role in helping the institution achieve multiple international accreditations, including JCI, ACHSI, and CBAHI. This achievement was not just a professional milestone but also a reflection of her dedication to improving the quality of healthcare and ensuring that patient care always came first.

“The experiences of my early life shaped who I am today. It was in the midst of struggle that I learned the true value of resilience, compassion, and the importance of helping others.”

Phase 1: Early Life and Formative Years

Born in Chalakudy, a small town in Kerala, Dr. Sholy Kavungal Ouseph’s early years were shaped by a unique set of circumstances that would mold her character and fuel her future aspirations. Raised in a family of five girls, her childhood was filled with love and challenges. Her parents, both of whom instilled in her a strong sense of duty to others, shaped her foundational values. Yet, despite this strong family support, life wasn’t always easy, and adversity would become an essential part of her life story.

When Dr. Kavungal was very young, her parents went through a difficult period in their marriage. This led to a temporary separation, during which Dr. Kavungal and her two younger sisters were sent to an orphanage, while the eldest sisters stayed in a hostel. The orphanage, called St. Joseph Sadan Puthenchira, founded by Rt. Rev. Msgr. John Maliekal, became their home for several years, and it was there that Dr. Kavungal was faced with the realities of life that most children never experience.

She often reflects on her time in the orphanage as a time of great personal growth, despite the challenges she faced. “The years spent in the orphanage taught me invaluable lessons in responsibility. I was not just a child; I was a caretaker for my younger sisters, and I had other children to care for as well. In those days, I rarely had the time to focus on my own studies. But the sense of responsibility I felt for others helped me build a foundation of resilience that would serve me for the rest of my life,” she recalls.

Despite the heavy responsibilities placed on her at such a young age, Dr. Kavungal found solace in the small moments she could dedicate to her education. Between taking care of her sisters and assisting in managing the orphanage’s daily routines, she would find time to finish her homework and study. Even though she did not get the same opportunities for academic focus as other children, Dr. Kavungal never gave up on learning. She attributes much of her early drive to the lessons of perseverance she learned during this period of hardship.

“Education is the key to unlocking the doors of opportunity. I learned early on that the pursuit of knowledge was not just for self-advancement, but for the betterment of those around me.”

Phase 2 : Education and Early Motivations

The foundation for Dr. Sholy Kavungal Ouseph’s journey toward becoming a respected leader in healthcare was laid during her early years, particularly through the educational experiences that would shape her worldview and drive. It was in these formative years, while navigating through personal struggles, that she realized the power of education—not only as a means for personal growth but also as a tool for empowerment and service to others.

After being reunited with her family and leaving the orphanage, Dr. Kavungal returned to her home, where her educational journey began to take shape. The time spent at the orphanage, though challenging, had given her a deep sense of responsibility, and she was determined to use her second chance to build a future for herself. She enrolled in St. Sebastian School, where her academic abilities began to flourish. Despite the interruption in her education, Dr. Kavungal quickly caught up and soon became one of the brightest students in her class. It was here that she first developed a love for learning, particularly for subjects that allowed her to engage with both critical thinking and compassion.

However, her time in school was not just about academics. Dr. Kavungal was drawn to extracurricular activities, especially those that allowed her to express herself creatively. She was an avid classical dancer and singer, with a deep passion for cultural activities. This passion led her to participate in several competitions, including being selected as Kalatilagam in Kerala in 1992, an honor that recognized her excellence in cultural pursuits. Her achievement as Kalatilagam was not just a personal milestone but a reflection of her determination to excel and her ability to balance academic and extracurricular activities. Dr. Kavungal has often said, “Winning Kalatilagam taught me that success doesn’t come easily, but with hard work and dedication, you can achieve anything, even when the odds seem stacked against you.”

“The journey to becoming a nurse is not just about learning how to care for patients; it’s about learning how to lead with compassion, to serve with integrity, and to make a difference in every life you touch.”

Phase 3 : Pursuing Nursing and Academic Growth

With a heart full of determination and a passion for healthcare, Dr. Sholy Kavungal Ouseph began the next chapter of her life by stepping into the world of professional nursing. Armed with a strong academic foundation, a deep sense of responsibility from her childhood, and the mentorship of those who believed in her, she embarked on a path that would ultimately lead her to become one of the most respected nursing leaders in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Upon completing her schooling and achieving academic excellence, Dr. Kavungal chose nursing as her life’s calling. Guided by her aunt, a hospital administrator at St. Theresa’s Hospital, she enrolled in the Medicity Medical College in Hyderabad. This was the beginning of a new chapter—one that would not only transform her life but also shape the future of many others.

The decision to pursue nursing came naturally to Dr. Kavungal. It was a career that combined her desire to help others with her strong leadership qualities. “Nursing is not just about providing physical care; it’s about being there for people in their most vulnerable moments, offering not just a cure but also hope and comfort,” she often says. This belief drove her during her years of study and continued to guide her throughout her career.

At Medicity, Dr. Kavungal not only excelled academically but also became a well-respected leader among her peers. She was actively involved in student leadership roles and extracurricular activities. Her participation in cultural events, like classical dance and singing, was more than just a way to engage with her community; it was also a means of expressing herself and balancing the intense rigors of nursing education. She embraced every opportunity to learn and grow, pushing herself to maintain a high level of academic excellence while participating in activities that nurtured her creativity and personal growth.
