True success is not measured by victories alone, but by the resilience to rise after every fall and the determination to keep moving forward.

Introduction

Every great story begins with a defining moment—an event that sets the course of a lifetime. For Shailendra Singh Rana, that moment came early. Born into a family of bureaucrats, he was surrounded by conversations of governance, law, and national service. With a father in the Indian Forest Service (IFS) and an uncle in the Indian Police Service (IPS), expectations were high. Rather, Shailendra was attracted by a life of adventure, discipline, and duty—the life of a soldier rather than the one that was more conventional.

From an early age in school, he was a born leader and fighter. A very talented hockey player at the national level and an NCC cadet with keen interest in defence, he was surely meant for a career that needed mental as well as physical grit. In 2000, he chose to join the military service and started an unforgettable journey that would take him through various parts of the country from disturbed areas to overseas peacekeeping operations.

He served in military and special operations in challenging roles and did so for 17 years, with deployments to high-security zones like Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and the Northeast on sensitive assignments that required both strategic precision and operational expertise. Many awards also accompanied his brilliant performance, of which one stood out: the commendation of the United Nations for his performance during peacekeeping operations in Lebanon.

However, nearly two decades into his career, he faced another defining moment in his life, that is, to either continue in the armed forces or enter civilian life. He opted for voluntary retirement and did it because he wanted to support his family and seek other avenues where he could use his skills. The transition was not easy, but Shailendra was never one to back down from a challenge.

His foray into the private security industry started with humble beginnings—two security guards and a vision. Today, Saburi Security Agency Pvt. Ltd. operates in multiple states, employing over 1600 personnel and providing elite security services to some of the most high-profile clients in the country.

His journey is a great reminder that success is not only about reaching a destination but embracing the struggles along the way. Through discipline, adaptability, and an unshakable belief in his purpose, Shailendra has transformed himself from a soldier to a business leader, leaving a lasting impact in every field he has touched.

Phase 1 : Early Life and Family Background

Shailendra Singh Rana was born into a family highly rooted in discipline, governance, and public service. His father, Mr. Devendra Singh Rana, was an Forest Service officer, It was because of this environment that a strong sense of duty and responsibility became a part of him when he was very young. The dinner table was where all conversations were majorly centred around law, governance, and national service, hence etching them on his mind forever.

Unlike most kids who have freedom to contemplate various professions, Shailendra’s entire upbringing was done in a structured path. The bureaucrat-parents dominated the household, and there was always that belief that he too should step into something which involved serving the nation. It was the structured discipline and rigour of the armed forces that attracted him instead of leading a conventional bureaucratic life.

Government Multipurpose Model Higher Secondary School was a place where he learned discipline. Though at times, he could be a bright, shining, or rather mischievous kid who kept pushing limits, testing the boundaries, and questioning the norms, what was a little different there was that indomitable spirit and relentless drive.

A Passion for Sports and Leadership

Apart from academics, Shailendra had in him a born flair for sports and leadership. He developed a keen interest in hockey and soon found himself competing at the national level. He has sheer athletic brilliance combined with competitive spirit and team spirit both in his performances at Nehru Hockey Tournament and National Hockey Championships.

The NCC was another entity that had impacted his aspirations considerably for a life in the military. He was a cadet in the 6th MP NCC Battalion and has been subjected to gruelling training in matters of military drill and other activities that help foster leadership skills. That only heightened his desire to join a better disciplined organization. The value of courage, endurance, and commitment instilled in him through NCC helped him in shaping up during the course of his military career.

The Making of a Soldier

Shailendra was reared on the perfect blend of discipline and adventure. The family background encouraged intellectual excellence and governance, but his personal interests pulled him more toward a career in defence and intelligence. He was challenged by the life in military and the honour that comes with serving the nation.

He was even as a boy drawn towards sacrifice, valour, and duty. The initial experiences of his life through sports and NCC had polished him to face this journey ahead. Little did he know that the formative years were but a prologue to an extraordinary journey of service, challenges, and ultimate triumph.

Phase 2 : The Call to Serve: Journey into the Armed Forces

The attraction of the armed forces was strong for Shailendra Singh Rana, who came from a family of bureaucrats and civil servants. He was expected to follow a traditional administrative path, which offered him no competition because his heart yearned for a more challenging role, dynamic, and high stake where he can protect, defend, and serve the nation directly.

The defining decision was at the age of 20 when he joined the Indian Army Intelligence Corps in the year 2000. That was not merely a career shift; it was a calling, a commitment, and a transformation.

Training and Early Postings

Training at the Training academy was tough both in terms of physical and mental endurance. His initial postings were to highly volatile regions of India—Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and the Northeast. These were, of course, ‘hot spots,’ where intelligence work needed to be ‘intricate,’ ‘brash,’ and ‘discreet.

Some of his significant postings were at Shillong where he was tasked with handling very important intelligence operations critical for national security. Dealing with covert assignments as well as counterterrorism operations and strategic intelligence gathering, the officer soon became an asset to the forces.

Phase 3 : Triumphs in Military Service and Recognitions

The military career was full of glory by Shailendra Singh Rana. Throughout 17 years, in which he spent time within the armed forces, Shailendra earned 16 medals and commendations—a great test and a guarantee for dedication towards and contribution towards the nation’s safety.

Key Recognition & Honors

Even though most of his missions remain classified, it is reported that his work was paramount to the intelligence operation for safeguarding national security and discouraging large threats from happening. Strategic insights and operational precision earned him respect from peers and superiors.

Lessons from Military Life

Discipline, resilience, and leadership were learned during his years in uniform. He learned that true leadership is not about authority but responsibility—to make split-second decisions that can mean the difference between success and failure, life and death.

His time in service also taught him something: flexibility is everything. In intelligence work, every second counts, and every decision can have a ripple effect. This ability to analyse, strategize, and act decisively would later become his greatest business asset.

"In preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable."
