Dr. Seewam Beerjoo’s life is centred around this philosophy; his journey is a testament to the subtle yet potent influence of perseverance, self-control, and the pursuit of lifelong learning. From his early years in the district of Flacq, Mauritius, to becoming a respected educator, mentor, and football coach, he has lived a life shaped by service to others, guided by the principles of commitment, focus, and unwavering self-belief.
Born on 18 October 1984 in Port Louis, he came from humble beginnings. Raised in a family of four siblings, he was the youngest and shared a special bond with his twin brother Mr Satyam Beerjoo, which deeply influenced his character. His parents, Mr. Ramdeo Beerjoo and Mrs. Oomowtee Beerjoo, laid the foundation for his strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. He was taught the value of discipline and the importance of family support at a young age, lessons that would serve him well throughout his life.
He finished his primary education at the Rampersad Bundhun Government School, where his educational journey started. At this point, he started to display the motivation and dedication that would later characterise his career. He came to understand that education and athletics would be the pillars of his life as he proceeded to Sir Leckraz Teeluck State Secondary School, where his academic and athletic abilities really started to blossom. He found his passion for physical education while participating in football, long-distance running, and sports day events during his secondary school years. These years laid the foundation for his future pursuits as a coach and an educator.
After completing his secondary education, he embarked on his higher education journey at Nagpur University in India, where he pursued a Bachelor’s in Physical Education. This marked a pivotal moment in his life, as he became the first member of his family to pursue higher education abroad. The difficulties he encountered as a student away from home only strengthened his determination and deepened his dedication to education and self-improvement. Under the guidance of mentors such as Mr Girgawkar, Dr. Dachewar, and Dr. Naidu, he refined his academic interests, and it was during this time that he honed the leadership skills that would later define his career.
Returning to Mauritius after completing his degree, he began his professional career as an educator in August 2007 at Modern College, a private school. He quickly established himself as a leader, rising to the position of Head of Department within just a few months due to his dedication and qualifications. His ability to manage and lead others was immediately recognized, and he became a role model for both his students and his colleagues. As he progressed in his career, he made a significant impact on the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, where he continued his work as an educator, fostering a culture of discipline, responsibility, and academic excellence. Over the course of his years in education, he worked to mould young minds and equip them with the resilience and confidence to face life’s challenges.
Dr. Seewam Beerjoo’s journey begins in the heart of Port Louis, Mauritius, where he was born on 18 October 1984. The story of his life is deeply intertwined with the strong family values and resilience instilled in him by his parents, Mr. Ramdeo Beerjoo and Mrs. Oomowtee Beerjoo. Growing up in the Flacq district, he experienced firsthand the importance of hard work, discipline, and the supportive embrace of a close-knit family.
From the very beginning, his environment shaped his future. He was raised in a family where values like perseverance, respect, and determination were more than just words; they were a way of life. As the youngest of four siblings, he shared a special bond with his twin brother, a relationship that laid the groundwork for his understanding of teamwork, mutual support, and the strength of family.
His early years at Rampersad Bundhun Government School, where he completed his primary education, marked the first chapter in his academic journey. It was here that he first demonstrated his natural aptitude for discipline and learning. From a young age, he was deeply aware of the importance of education as a gateway to success, a belief that was further strengthened by his parents’ encouragement.
His primary school experiences and obstacles greatly influenced his future course. His teachers were crucial in fostering his curiosity and academic interests in spite of the limited resources available. During these early years, his love of sports really started to define him, even though he did well academically.
Sir Leckraz Teeluck State Secondary School was where his story took a pivotal turn. It was here that his love for sports truly blossomed. Enrolled from Grade 7 through Grade 13, he became involved in several athletic activities, including long-distance races and football, events that would shape both his personal and professional identity.
Dr. Seewam Beerjoo’s journey from his childhood in Mauritius to becoming an influential educator and coach reflects a life built on the foundational principles of discipline, self-belief, and a deep passion for both education and sports. Following his formative years, his dedication to both learning and sports paved the way for his professional career, where he excelled in his academic pursuits and made meaningful contributions to his community, especially through his commitment to sports.
After completing his secondary education at Sir Leckraz Teeluck State Secondary School, he made a pivotal decision to continue his studies at Nagpur University in India, where he pursued a Bachelor’s in Physical Education. This marked the beginning of his academic transformation and a deeper commitment to the field of education. Leaving Mauritius for India was not only a personal challenge but also a leap into an entirely new academic and cultural environment. His determination to broaden his horizons was exemplified by this bold step, reflecting his belief that true growth lies beyond comfort zones.
He encountered new difficulties in India, such as adjusting to a new educational system, negotiating cultural differences, and handling the obligations of living overseas. But he became more resilient with each setback. Nagpur University’s academic demands and varied experiences further refined his understanding of physical education as more than just a fitness-focused discipline. He started to see it as a way to develop students’ character, encourage teamwork, and get them ready for life’s obstacles. His educational philosophy was greatly influenced by his professors, including Dr Dachewar and Dr. Naidu. They helped him understand that the real purpose of teaching was to motivate people to reach their full potential by guiding him through the theoretical and practical facets of physical education.
For Dr. Seewam Beerjoo, the shift from educator to leader was not just a career progression; it was a natural evolution driven by his deep commitment to shaping the next generation. After his impactful years at Modern College and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, his journey entered a new phase marked by a broadened influence, increased responsibilities, and the opportunity to take his impact far beyond the classroom. These were the years that would solidify his reputation as both a mentor and a leader, a role he embraced with dedication, humility, and an unwavering focus on the students and athletes he served.
In 2010, after several successful years as a teacher and Head of Department at Modern College, he made the decision to move to the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. This shift represented a significant step forward in his professional journey. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute, a semi-government school, offered a larger platform where he could continue his passion for teaching while simultaneously growing as a leader in the educational system. It was here that he would face new challenges but also have greater opportunities to shape the educational experience for his students and make a wider impact within the community.
At the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, his role expanded beyond the boundaries of classroom teaching. He was able to influence curriculum design, organise larger-scale events, and work with a broader network of teachers and administrators to implement programs that were not just about academics but about shaping the overall well-being of students. His leadership in these areas was instrumental in making physical education a more integrated and respected part of the academic structure.
The greatest successes in life are frequently the consequence of the steadfast love, support, and encouragement of those closest to us. Success is a collective force that is shaped by the support of mentors, family, and the communities that support and encourage us along the way, according to Dr. Seewam Beerjoo, who has always held this view.
First and foremost, he expresses profound gratitude to his family, whose unwavering support has been a source of strength throughout his journey. The sacrifices and love from his parents, Ramdeo Beerjoo and Oomowtee Beerjoo, instilled in him the values of resilience, determination, and the importance of nurturing future generations. Their belief in his potential has been a steady foundation for everything he has achieved. Varsha Devi Beerjoo, his spouse, has been a steadfast partner, walking alongside him through every challenge and success, providing the emotional support and understanding that has allowed him to thrive in every aspect of his life.
His career would not have been possible without the invaluable mentorship and guidance from Mr. Neil Murphy, the Head Coach at Liverpool Football Club International Academy Mauritius, whose dedication to the growth of young athletes taught him the true essence of leadership. Additionally, Dr. Shravansingh Sowamber and Dr. Arvind Burjoo have been pivotal mentors in his educational and professional journey, guiding him with their wisdom and encouraging him to extend his impact far beyond his initial ambitions.
Finally, Dr. Seewam Beerjoo would like to thank all of the students, athletes, coworkers, and communities who have let him into their lives. He is still inspired every day by their dedication to education, development, and achievement. All of the people who have helped him along the way have contributed to his leadership legacy, which reflects their combined efforts and common goal.
