Dr. Rajesh Gopalakrishnan from a humble upbringing to pioneering leadership in Pharmaceutical R&D. His life speaks volumes for the tenacious pursuit of excellence in whatever he has undertaken over the last 18 years. A poignant tale of personal struggles and professional triumphs blended seamlessly with a relentless focus on innovation which has left an indelible mark in the pharmaceutical industry. It’s a tale of tenacity, leadership, and the difference one person can make on this earth.
Dr. Rajesh’s formative years instilled in him resilience. From fighting academic battles to coping with personal crises-the passing of his mother when he was young, which became a permanent scar in his life-Dr. Rajesh felt that persistence and positivity were the two doors that made him walk forward. His father was the only hero who assisted him in overcoming the disturbing periods and taught him the value of hard work and determination. From the early days, Dr. Rajesh was sown with a commitment toward what was then his future career in the pharmaceutical industry, during which he would proceed to achieve a lot of milestones where he made significant contributions in drug formulation and research. For readers, this journey is a ledger maintained by divine powers who offer celestial bliss and recycling thoughts that transform growth.
His professional studies first begun at Dr. Indira Gandhi College, where he did his pre-pharmacy course from 1999 to 2003. It was during this time that Dr. Rajesh developed what would eventually become a lifelong dedication to the field of pharmacy
In 2004, Dr. Rajesh moved one step closer to his dreams by getting enrolled in an M.Pharm course at the prestigious Dr. MGR University. This is when he genuinely started establishing himself as among the brighter students in the class. Be it First rank in his class or distinction; Dr. Rajesh’s academic excellence was known from the very onset.
At the turn of his M. Pharm years, he was attached with TTK Healthcare Ltd., Chennai, for an industrial training program in 2002, which gave him critical insight into the real-world application of pharmaceutical research. Subsequent exposure to the practical aspects of the industry from the very formulation of drugs to method development shaped his understanding of what goes into creating lifesaving medications. Dr. Rajesh also received training at Government Hospital, Chennai, where he had exposure to clinical pharmacy and Dispensing, adding to his experience.
Throughout the years, he complemented his academic career by attending and speaking at seminars, workshops, and guest lectures. Exponential knowledge and skill development were a result of the roles he played of leadership over large teams of scientists working in the development, validation, and regulatory filings. He became a leader not only by professional elevation but also by sharing his expertise with the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists
The first big challenge arose when, in 2006, Dr. Rajesh joined as Research Associate with Aurobindo Pharma. For Dr. Rajesh, at this stage, going directly from university life to the exacting demands of the pharmaceutical industry was nothing short of plunging headlong. Naïve in some ways to the intricacies of analytical chemistry and method development, he, therefore, had much pressure to deliver in such a fiercely competitive environment. Initial setbacks in this respect had been overcome by his quick learning and concentration. Later, he was promoted to Scientist in the year 2011.
One of the most defining challenges in Dr. Rajesh’s career came while he was working at PAR Pharmaceuticals. Having led more than 48 projects successfully, Dr. Rajesh saw himself failing in a big task of technology transfer. Years of dedicated service meant nothing, and he received a shocker of being let go with immediate effect-a shocking experience that really did shake his confidence. Dr. Rajesh refused to let this define him. In other words, as Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” Dr. Rajesh followed only this attitude and opted to reconstruct his career with doubled vigor.
Certain legal problems almost sent his career off the rails when he joined Strides Shasun as Head of Analytical R&D in 2016. His previous employer sued him and got a stay order that restrained him from joining the company. This litigation case kept him out of work for many months and was a real test of Dr. Rajesh’s mental and emotional strength. Being the fighter, Dr. Rajesh fought back and eventually emerged victorious: the case was settled, and he was back to work. He came out stronger on both professional and personal levels, for on his way up he learned the value of persistence and legal acumen in surmounting career challenges.
Dr. Rajesh has seen personal and professional challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Having lost his father during this pandemic and suffering multiple health scares during that time, Dr. Rajesh did not let his spirits dip and continued to hope in the pharmaceutical industry. He supported essential research and development in response to the crisis. Truly, he showed great leadership during trying times. His resolve and commitment to work after the death of a loved one further entrenched his reputation as a resilient leader.
1. Promotion to Scientist at Aurobindo Pharma (2011): After the early career problems, Dr. Rajesh finally managed to get promoted in his fifth year.
2. Leadership Role at PAR Pharmaceuticals (2012 – 2016): He led a team of scientists to develop more than 14 ANDAs in one year.
3. Deputy General Manager at Exeltis India (2017): The final denouement of Dr. Rajesh’s resilience is his heading a team of 18 scientists, with over 300 drug formulations under his watch at present.
4. USFDA Audits (2015): One of the major accomplishments of Dr. Rajesh in his professional field has been leading with success two major USFDA audits with zero observations.
A glance in the past for Dr. Rajesh – at least retrospectively, would lend a firm witness to the chronicle of his career. Looking back at the history of his career, there are ups and downs that form a complete picture of fond memories. From entering the pharmaceutical R&D world at Aurobindo Pharma during the early days to the current engagement with Exeltis India as a Deputy General Manager, Dr. Rajesh has witnessed himself grow as a person and professional.
Dr. Rajesh also wants to make an impact that may last a long time, introducing the area more advanced technologies so that scientific generations that come can use the latest methodologies. Dr. Rajesh personally hopes to balance his career goals with personal fulfilment, like the dream of embarking on a world tour. Moving forward, he is committed to the pharmaceutical industry, and in the future, his aspirations will more or less be about continuing to make impacts while inspiring the next generation of innovators.
