"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful."

Introduction

Dr. Muhammad Azam Razzak’s life exemplifies the truth behind this quote. His journey, filled with both triumphs and challenges, paints a powerful picture of resilience, vision, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

Born in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1976, Dr. Razzak came into a world of privilege. His father, Muhammad Razzak, was a successful businessman, and the family enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle. The early years of Dr. Razzak’s life were marked by prosperity, with his father providing for the family and indulging them in luxuries that were rare in their community. The golden period of his childhood saw his father providing new cars every year, an extraordinary feat in an era when owning even a bicycle was a luxury for many.

However, life took an unexpected turn when, in 1987, tragedy struck the family. Dr. Razzak’s father passed away suddenly, leaving behind a family that was unprepared for the overwhelming financial burden. With his mother, a housewife who had no experience managing the family’s finances, the responsibility of holding the family together fell entirely on her shoulders. The sudden loss led to a significant decline in the family’s fortune, with everything—the house, the cars, and their financial security—being lost in a matter of years. This marked a pivotal moment in Dr. Razzak’s life, one that would serve as a catalyst for the man he would become.

Amid this sudden shift in his family’s fortune, Dr. Razzak learned valuable lessons about survival, resilience, and the importance of self-reliance. During these challenging years, he took on several part-time jobs, tutoring young students, teaching mathematics, and even working in a video rental shop. His experience during this period wasn’t just about financial survival but also about learning how to turn adversity into a driving force for personal growth. It was through this hardship that Dr. Razzak discovered his passion for education, something that would guide him throughout his life and career.

While his early years were marked by struggle, Dr. Razzak never allowed his circumstances to define his future. Instead of succumbing to the hardships, he decided to carve his own path. He completed his matriculation and went on to pursue higher education. With a natural affinity for numbers and a deep understanding of the importance of education, he focused on pursuing a career in Chartered Accountancy (CA). His hard work and determination led him to gain admission into the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP), where he began his journey toward professional success.

"It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters."

Phase 1: Early Life and Family Background

The journey of Dr. Muhammad Azam Razzak began in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1976, where he was born into a family that enjoyed the fruits of prosperity. The early years of his life were characterized by the comforts of luxury. His father, Muhammad Razzak, was a successful businessman who ran a prominent trucking and goods transportation company. Living in a large house with new cars every year, the family’s lifestyle reflected their financial stability. It was an era when very few had the privilege of owning even one car, yet Dr. Razzak’s family was able to enjoy the best of what life had to offer. The young boy’s world was full of promise, filled with hope for an even brighter future. He was surrounded by a strong sense of stability, one that seemed as though it would never end.

But life, as it often does, had other plans. In 1987, when Dr. Razzak was just 11 years old, tragedy struck the family. His father, Muhammad Razzak, passed away unexpectedly. The loss was devastating not just emotionally but financially as well. His father’s passing left a massive void, and with it came the collapse of the family’s financial security. The prosperity that had once surrounded their home faded quickly, and with it, the luxuries they had grown accustomed to. This loss left Dr. Razzak’s family in a difficult position.

His mother, a dedicated housewife, was suddenly thrust into a role she had never imagined. With no knowledge of managing finances, she had to figure out how to support her four children. The family’s wealth quickly dwindled, and within a few short years, they sold their house and cars. The stark contrast between the wealth they once had and the harsh reality they now faced was something that Dr. Razzak could not ignore. This experience marked the beginning of his life as a self-made individual, and it instilled in him a drive to rise above the adversity that life had dealt him.

During this period, Dr. Razzak learned early lessons about survival, responsibility, and resilience. The loss of his father and the financial collapse that followed tested his determination and ability to adapt. Despite the challenges, he never lost sight of the importance of education.

"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

Phase 2 : Overcoming Early Challenges

In the aftermath of the loss of his father, Dr. Muhammad Azam Razzak faced a period of significant upheaval that no child should have to endure. The sudden and unexpected death of his father, Muhammad Razzak, in 1987 was a moment that irrevocably altered the trajectory of his life. The family’s wealth, which had once afforded them comforts unimaginable to many, disappeared just as quickly as it had come. The luxurious lifestyle that had been a part of their everyday existence was replaced by a harsh reality that no one had anticipated.

With his father’s passing, the burden of supporting the family fell on his mother, who, until then, had been a full-time housewife with little knowledge of managing finances or dealing with business affairs. In a matter of a few years, the family’s possessions, cars, the house, and even the small luxuries of daily life were all sold off to make ends meet. The once comfortable family was now struggling to get by, and Dr. Razzak was forced to confront a new world filled with challenges and responsibilities.

This period of struggle was a turning point in Dr. Razzak’s life. It became the crucible in which the qualities of resilience, perseverance, and hard work were forged. The financial struggles at home prompted him to take on multiple jobs, and he learned early on that survival required effort beyond the conventional. His love for mathematics, which had always been a natural talent, led him to begin tutoring local students. In addition to tutoring, Dr. Razzak worked various odd jobs, including working at a local video rental shop, just to make ends meet. The strain of balancing education, work, and the responsibility of supporting his family was immense, yet it was in this crucible that Dr. Razzak’s work ethic and determination began to take shape.

Despite the financial difficulties, he was determined to continue his education. Dr. Razzak had always placed a high value on education, and the hardships did not dampen his resolve. While his peers might have been enjoying their school days, he was busy juggling multiple responsibilities.

"The only way to do great work is to love what you do."

Phase 3 : Academic Pursuits and Early Career

The path to success for Dr. Muhammad Azam Razzak was paved with hard work, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to education. Despite facing significant personal and financial challenges in his youth, his determination to build a brighter future never faltered. The period following the death of his father, Muhammad Razzak, in 1987, was particularly difficult, but it was during these hard times that the seeds of Dr. Razzak’s professional and academic journey were sown. His experiences shaped not only his career but also the values that he would carry with him throughout his life.

After the financial downfall of his family, Dr. Razzak knew that education was his only escape from the difficulties that surrounded him. His academic journey was not just about acquiring degrees; it was about building a foundation for his future. He had always excelled in mathematics, and this talent led him to become a tutor at an early age, teaching students in his neighborhood. At a time when many of his peers were focusing on social activities, he was earning money to support his family while pursuing his academic dreams. This early experience in tutoring not only helped him financially but also instilled in him the values of hard work and responsibility.

Despite the heavy workload of balancing multiple jobs, Dr. Razzak managed to maintain his academic performance. His commitment to learning was evident, and it was no surprise when he secured a spot at the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP), where he began his journey toward becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA). His decision to pursue Chartered Accountancy was not made lightly; it was the result of a clear vision of his future. Dr. Razzak understood that this profession would open doors to global opportunities and provide the financial stability that he so desperately needed.

In addition to his CA studies, Dr. Razzak was determined to further his education and broaden his knowledge. He decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Karachi. This was a pivotal decision, as it allowed him to develop a deeper understanding of the global financial system and its impact on businesses and economies.
