"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and it is the courage to take that first step that often defines the path."

Introduction

The life of Dr. Monica Aggarwal is a testament to the belief that transformation is not just a single event but a series of brave decisions made with passion and purpose. Born in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, on January 21, 1969, Monica’s life was shaped by the love and values instilled in her by her parents, Dr. Girish Mohan Gupta and Sharda Gupta. Growing up in a small town, Monica’s upbringing was anything but ordinary. Her early life was steeped in the teachings of her father, a man whose unwavering determination and go-getter attitude would become her greatest source of inspiration. Her mother, Sharda Gupta, was the steady anchor, reminding her of the importance of education, learning, and self-reliance.

Monica’s childhood was filled with moments of joy and creativity, fostered by her parents’ nurturing environment. Her father’s career as an engineer allowed her a life of security and comfort, though it was his outlook on life that left the most lasting impression. Dr. Gupta always encouraged Monica to embrace challenges, as he believed that every obstacle was a lesson in disguise. His philosophy, encapsulated in his frequent words, “Agar manka acha hai toh, lekin agar manka cha nahi hota, toh orbhi bohotachay,” taught Monica that the pursuit of what truly mattered could lead to unexpected successes.

As a young girl, Monica harbored dreams of becoming a doctor. She would often play with doctor’s kits, pretending to heal and care for others. However, her path would take a turn, and as she matured, she discovered a deep love for the arts. This shift in interests did not deter her from excelling in academics; in fact, it laid the foundation for a future that would see her effortlessly balance creativity with practicality. Her academic journey began at Montfort School, Ashok Vihar, in New Delhi, where her talents flourished. Monica was not only a brilliant student but also a gifted artist, excelling in both the sciences and creative subjects.

In her pursuit of higher education, Monica enrolled at Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College, where she earned a degree in Mathematical Statistics Honours. Her studies, though rooted in numbers, brought out a deep love for symmetry and geometry traits that would later influence her art. During her time at university, Monica discovered her passion for design and creativity, leading her to pursue a Diploma in Textile Designing from the New Delhi School of Arts in 1993.

It was during this period that Monica’s entrepreneurial spirit began to take shape. She launched Paisley’s Linen, a brand specializing in handcrafted home linens, particularly appliqué work. The brand quickly gained popularity, and Monica’s creativity was recognized across cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, as well as internationally in South Africa. For 13 years, Paisley’s Linen was not only a retail success but also a symbol of Monica’s unique vision in the textile industry. Yet, as life often unfolds in unexpected ways, Monica decided to take a break from her entrepreneurial journey to embrace motherhood.

"The foundation of who we are is often built in the quiet moments of our early lives, where love, sacrifice, and learning shape our character."

Phase 1: Early Life and Family Foundation

Dr. Monica Aggarwal’s story begins in the small town of Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, on January 21, 1969. Born into a family that valued education, hard work, and resilience, Monica’s early years were defined by the nurturing environment created by her parents, Dr. Girish Mohan Gupta and Sharda Gupta. Although Monica’s birth took place in a government hospital in Badaun, her father, who was working as an engineer in Delhi, considered her arrival a turning point in his life. Dr. Gupta believed that Monica’s birth brought him luck, as it was around this time that he was granted a company car, an achievement he proudly associated with his daughter’s arrival.

Monica’s family history was steeped in a tradition of hard work and sacrifice. Her father, Dr. Girish Mohan Gupta, had spent years in service as an engineer, and his work ethic was something that Monica admired deeply. Dr. Gupta’s influence on Monica was profound, as he constantly encouraged her to value perseverance and resilience above all. His persistent, go-getter, and hopeful attitude shaped Monica’s worldview in ways that would last a lifetime. Sharda Gupta, Monica’s mother, played an equally important role. Though not formally educated, Sharda provided unwavering emotional support to Monica and her siblings. She created a home environment grounded in values of love, respect, and simplicity.

Growing up in this balanced environment, Monica was deeply influenced by her father’s philosophy of hard work and determination. Dr. Gupta was always a source of inspiration, particularly when he shared his favourite quote with Monica: “Agar manka acha hai toh, lekin agar manka cha nahi hota, toh orbhi bohotachay.” These words resonated with her throughout her life, teaching her that success doesn’t always come in expected ways. Sometimes, what we think we need or want is not as valuable as the opportunities that come our way through persistence.

While Dr. Gupta found great satisfaction in his engineering career, Monica’s early years were not defined by strict academic pressure or rigid expectations. Her parents were firm believers in allowing their children to explore their passions and curiosities.

"The seeds of greatness are often sown in the classrooms and playgrounds of our youth. It is here that we first learn the value of dreams and how to nurture them into reality."

Phase 2 : Schooling, Early Aspirations, and Evolving Interests

Monica’s schooling years were marked by both privilege and personal growth. Raised as the only daughter in a family of boys, she was showered with love, attention, and the best education her parents could provide. Her time at Montfort School, Ashok Vihar, in New Delhi was a mixture of academic achievements, cultural explorations, and personal discoveries. Although Monica’s early years were filled with academic success and parental affection, they were also characterized by a period of complacency. The consistent pampering and attention she received from her family, while giving her a sense of security, also led her to become somewhat distracted from the discipline of academics.

Her academic journey at Montfort School was not without its struggles. While Monica was undoubtedly intelligent and had a natural aptitude for learning, her overindulgence in familial comforts led to a decline in her academic performance. She was no longer the overachiever she once was. Despite being an A+ student, she found it hard to focus and apply herself fully. At one point, she realized that she was coasting, no longer challenging herself the way she used to. This shift in her attitude was a significant turning point in her life, as it taught her the importance of discipline, self-motivation, and the value of effort.

In hindsight, Monica often reflects on how her family’s excessive pampering, while intended to provide comfort, had somewhat shielded her from the struggles that many children face growing up. She believes that this experience, although challenging at the time, allowed her to develop resilience and a desire to push through personal obstacles later in life. The pampered upbringing, in fact, taught her the importance of self-reliance and how it was necessary to work for what she desired.

As she moved through school, Monica began to feel a subtle but noticeable shift in her passions. While she had once been focused on becoming a doctor, playing with medical kits, and aspiring to save lives, her interests began to broaden.

"In life, there are no wrong turns only unexpected lessons that help shape us into the individuals we are meant to be."

Phase 3 : The Journey of Self-Discovery, Education, and Entrepreneurial Spirit

The years following Monica Aggarwal’s schooling and university studies were ones of exploration, where her path began to truly define itself. She had already established a solid academic foundation, excelling in Mathematical Statistics at Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College. But even as she pursued a degree rooted in numbers, Monica found herself at a crossroads, torn between the structured world of mathematics and the creative world that called to her. Monica’s story during this phase was one of inner conflict,  balancing the expectations placed on her as a student with the undeniable pull of her artistic inclinations.

The turning point came after she completed her undergraduate studies. She could have easily followed the conventional route, pursuing further studies in mathematics or seeking a career in statistics. Yet, deep down, Monica knew that her heart was not fully invested in the world of numbers. Although she excelled in statistics, the spark she had for creativity, particularly in art and design,  could not be ignored. It was during this period that Monica realized that, despite the prestige and stability a career in statistics could offer, it was her creative side that truly resonated with her.

With the unwavering support of her family, particularly her father, Dr. Girish Mohan Gupta, who encouraged her to pursue her passions, Monica decided to take a bold step. She enrolled in a Diploma in Textile Designing at the New Delhi School of Arts in 1992. The decision to transition from the analytical world of statistics to the artistic world of design was not an easy one, and it came with its own set of challenges. Many people around her, especially those who knew her for her academic prowess, questioned the shift. However, Monica trusted her instincts and saw this new path as a chance to connect with the creativity that had always been a part of her.

At the New Delhi School of Arts, Monica began to immerse herself fully in the world of design. She was introduced to a variety of artistic techniques, from fabric painting and embroidery to textile construction and design principles.
