His papers and research contributions supported reports that led to the identification and construction of artesian free‑flowing wells—a milestone in India’s groundwater development.
He later served as a lawyer and environmentalist, adjudicating complex environmental disputes as a judge on the Pollution Control Appellate Authority. His expertise guided major developmental projects across India, and helped shape the Food for Work Program, a national initiative that has supported millions of poverty‑stricken citizens since 2004.
His visit to the United States became a defining chapter in his professional journey. Exposure to advanced groundwater technologies, environmental‑regulation systems, and modern scientific practices broadened his global perspective and reaffirmed the value of his own contributions in India. The experience strengthened his commitment to environmental stewardship and enriched the legacy he passed on to his children.
For a son watching closely, this was more than a change of occupation. It was evidence that age or an established identity did not have to prevent a person from learning something new. His father’s example showed that another chapter could be opened through disciplined effort. His mother’s influence, together with the wider values of the household, gave warmth and moral depth to that lesson.

Completing one degree did not satisfy the ambition that had been growing within him. He wanted advanced study, even though a master’s education was expensive for a family that had not been born into wealth. The cost did not make the goal less meaningful; it made preparation more necessary. He approached the decision with due diligence and a willingness to work for it. At the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, he pursued a Master of Engineering in Electronics and Control, completed the program in 1996.
The academic environment reflected a period when computer science and electronics often overlapped. The boundaries that later became familiar were still taking shape. Dr. Sanjeev’s projects moved into the computer science field, allowing him to connect control systems with programming. This combination suited his mind. Electronics taught him to respect what happened at the level of hardware, while software opened another layer of possibility. A system could be designed not only through components, but through instructions that directed behavior in real time.
An internship at the National Aerospace Laboratory in 1996 brought him closer to the world of scientific research that had long fascinated him. Although the childhood dream had been associated with NASA, the deeper aspiration was always to work where technology met serious purpose. A research setting offered that experience. It demanded accuracy, patience, and an ability to learn from people whose knowledge had been shaped by practical experience as much as by textbooks.
That same year, he began work as a Member of Research Staff at BEL Central Research Laboratory, where he remained until 1999. It had to perform within a specific system, under defined conditions, and with consequences that required absolute care. Development moved from logic written by a programmer to instructions placed into a chip. The distance between thought and function became very small.
This work gave Dr. Sanjeev a strong grounding in system programming. He came to understand how languages and platforms related to the deeper behavior of a machine. His experience with C, C++, and later Java did not develop as a collection of fashionable skills. It grew from the need to understand what a system was doing and why. That foundation would remain valuable long after his responsibilities expanded beyond development. The turning point that carried Dr. Sanjeev to the United States did not begin with a grand announcement. While visiting his parents from New Delhi, he attended an interview process in India with a measure of casual openness. The opportunity required a written examination in C and C++, followed by several stages of interviews. Each round demanded another demonstration of competence. What might have ended as an ordinary attempt continued until he reached the final selection.
The process confirmed something that would become central to his understanding of life. A different path cannot reveal itself unless a person is willing to step onto it. Had he decided not to attend, the possibility would have ended before it began. By showing up, preparing, and continuing through each stage, he placed himself where ability could meet opportunity. Selection was followed by the necessary H1B processing and the promise of client work in the United States.
In April 1999, at twenty-five and approaching his twenty-sixth birthday, he boarded a Lufthansa flight from India. Even the journey offered a small lesson in cultural unfamiliarity. When a cheeseburger was offered, he did not understand that it contained red meat.
The misunderstanding was simple, almost humorous, but memorable. It showed how many ordinary assumptions change when a person crosses into another culture. Learning would no longer be confined to technology. Food, language, transport, social habits, and daily routines would all require attention.
His elder sister had arrived in the United States a few months earlier, but she was in San Francisco. Dr. Sanjeev began his own American life in the Northeast, largely on his own. He spent some time in New York and then established himself in Connecticut. The distance from familiar people was not only geographical. The landscape, weather, movement of daily life, and expectations of independence were different from what he had known.
Transportation became one of the first practical difficulties. He did not have a car, and Connecticut offered little of the public transport on which a newcomer might have depended. At times, he walked several miles because asking others for help on every occasion felt uncomfortable. Once, he and a friend set out for a store believing it was close. Without a clear sense of the distance, they continued walking and eventually realized that the journey was closer to three or five miles than the short trip they had imagined. Having known what, it felt like to lack transportation, information, or nearby support, he became more inclined to notice when another person faced the same difficulty. Assistance was no longer an abstract kindness. It was connected to the memory of roads walked because no easier option was available. The discomfort of beginning again gradually became a source of empathy.
Adjustment also required the humility to admit what he did not know. Familiar competence in engineering did not automatically explain how to organize a new life. Directions could be misunderstood, distances underestimated, and everyday customs misread. Dr. Sanjeev learned that intelligence does not remove the need to ask, observe, and adapt. That lesson later made it easier for him to support people who were technically capable yet uncertain in a new environment.
