Introduction

The life of Dr. Manpreet Singh Sandhu is a remarkable testament to resilience, purpose, and transformation. His journey, beginning in the fields of Punjab and leading him through the classrooms of NCR, reflects the story of a man who has continually adapted to the changing demands of life while staying true to his passion for education. From humble beginnings, he has become a prominent educational leader, and his life has been marked by both struggle and triumph.

Born in Punjab and raised in NCR, he was shaped by the lessons of both city and rural life. Although his parents, Jaswan Kaur (a teacher) and Jaswant Singh (who worked at Bharat Electronics Limited in Ghaziabad), worked tirelessly, Manpreet found himself missing their presence during crucial moments of his academic life. Despite this, he later came to understand the importance of parental involvement in education, which deeply influenced his own approach as a teacher and mentor.

However, his early life wasn’t free of hardship. The traumatic events of 1984, when the anti-Sikh riots erupted across India, forever shaped him. His family had to flee Ghaziabad and eventually seek refuge in Punjab. In this period of intense fear and uncertainty, Manpreet’s mother saved his life by disguising him. This experience, while harrowing, strengthened his resolve and deepened his understanding of resilience in the face of adversity.

After completing his schooling in Ghaziabad, he pursued his graduation at Delhi University. But life had other plans for him, and he returned to his ancestral farmhouse in Punjab to take on the challenging but grounding work of farming. For over 30 years, he embraced the life of a farmer, learning the importance of hard work, patience, and perseverance. Yet, despite the rewards that farming provided, he struggled with financial instability and debt. This led him to realize that, while farming was close to his heart, his future lay in another field: education.

In 2007, he made the pivotal decision to transition into teaching. His passion for mentoring and his desire to provide a stable, fulfilling career led him to education. He joined the profession not out of necessity alone but because he truly felt that teaching was in his blood, after all, his grandfather and mother had all been educators. He began his teaching career in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, where he spent 16 years refining his skills. Over time, he earned a reputation for being not just a teacher but a mentor who made a lasting impact on his students.

Phase 1: Roots in Punjab and Early Childhood

Born in Punjab and later raised in NCR, his childhood was deeply influenced by the dedication of his parents. His mother, Jaswant Kaur, worked as a teacher, and his father, Ajaib Singh Sandhu, was employed at Bharat Electronics Limited in Ghaziabad. Despite their tireless efforts, he often had to navigate his academic journey alone. The absence of parental involvement during crucial academic moments, like Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs), instilled in him a deep sense of independence. However, this also created a longing for the type of guidance many of his peers had from their families.

Though his parents were not always physically present during these pivotal moments, his grandparents played an instrumental role in his upbringing. Sardar Jaswant Singh, his grandfather, and Sardarni Nachatar Kaur, his grandmother, were both illiterate, yet they imparted invaluable life lessons that went beyond formal education. From them, he learned that hard work, patience, and humility were the true measures of success. His grandfather’s advice, “If you dig deeper, you will have a better harvest,” became his mantra, a guiding philosophy throughout his life, reminding him that the real rewards in life come from sustained effort and dedication.

However, his childhood was far from easy. The year 1984 brought with it the profound trauma of the anti-Sikh riots, following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. For his family, this period was marked by fear and uncertainty. They were forced to flee Ghaziabad and seek refuge in Punjab, where they lived in hiding for months, navigating the harsh realities of a country at war with itself. The memories of those times remained vivid for him, especially the moment his mother disguised him to protect him from being targeted during the violence. This experience, though terrifying, taught him powerful lessons about resilience, sacrifice, and the strength of family bonds.

“I may not have always had my parents by my side, but their sacrifices shaped my path. In their absence, I learned to stand on my own, guided by the values they quietly instilled in me.”

Phase 2 : The Shaping Influence of Parents and Early Struggles

Growing up in a family where both parents worked tirelessly, he learned the value of hard work and perseverance early on. His mother, a dedicated teacher, was one of the most influential figures in his life. While her professional commitments often kept her busy, Jaswant Kaur quietly and constantly encouraged him, providing the foundation for his educational journey. Their children, his son, who completed his LLB from ILS Pune, and his daughter, are a constant source of pride. They embody the values of perseverance, hard work, and resilience and continue to inspire him every day with their growth and achievements.

He is forever grateful to his uncle, who, with his wisdom and guidance, has played an invaluable role in his life. His aunt, whose compassion and love have been a source of comfort, has also been a guiding light. Their belief in him, and the quiet support they’ve provided, have made a lasting impact on his journey.

The mentors he’s had the privilege of learning from have shaped him not only as an educator but as a human being. Ramesh Kumar Biz, his dear friend of over 80 years, opened his eyes to the power of language and literature. Mohini Samson Blest, his History Principal, taught him the importance of discipline and academic rigour. S.P. Singh, his Physical Education teacher, instilled in him the values of perseverance and physical fitness, which he believes are essential to every aspect of life. Mr. H.S. Lal, his Principal, helped him realize that true leadership is about guiding others with compassion and wisdom.

To all these individuals: family, mentors, friends, Dr. Manpreet Singh Sandhu offers his deepest gratitude. It is through their love, support, and guidance that he has been able to accomplish everything he has.
