His educational journey began in his hometown, where he completed his primary schooling and college education. During his college years, he developed a passion for football and represented his college, city, and university. This period helped him build discipline, confidence, and a competitive spirit that later became valuable throughout his professional life.
In 1974, his journey entered a new chapter when he received his commission and joined the Border Security Force as an officer. His training at the BSF Academy, Tekanpur, prepared him for the responsibilities of service, and his physical strength and determination allowed him to complete commando training as well. His postings in the north-eastern region exposed him to challenging situations and gave him experiences that shaped his understanding of responsibility, courage, and decision-making.
After nearly a decade of service, he made the difficult decision to resign from the force. Having completed 9 years and 7 months, he chose not to continue simply for financial security, as he believed that personal dignity and professional growth held greater importance. This decision marked the beginning of another significant transition in his life.
His transition into the corporate world was accompanied by a continued commitment to learning and self-development. Pursuing higher education during this phase reflected his determination to expand his knowledge and prepare himself for new professional responsibilities. The journey became an important step in his transformation from a service professional to a corporate leader.
Every meaningful journey begins with a foundation, and for Dr. Venugopal Kannoth, that foundation was built in the simplicity of his early surroundings, the values of his family, and the experiences that shaped his understanding of life. Before he stepped into positions of responsibility and faced challenges across different fields, his identity was formed in a small village in Kerala, where his earliest memories and life lessons took root.
He was born in a place located in the Payyanur, a place located in Kannur Dist, Kerala. At the time, it was a small village, though it later developed into a town. It remained the place where his early years unfolded, where he completed his primary schooling, and where he continued his education during his college years. The environment around him during these formative years became the beginning of his connection with discipline, learning, and personal growth.
The simplicity of his early surroundings played an important role in shaping his perspective. His childhood was closely connected with his family and the values they represented. Among the strongest influences in his life were his parents, Late Govindan Nair and Late Lakshmi Amma, whose presence guided him in different ways. The lessons he received from them became principles that stayed with him throughout his personal and professional journey.
From his father, he inherited the value of integrity. For him, his father was not only a parent but also a source of inspiration. He admired the way his father approached life with honesty and directness. He remembers that his father always believed in speaking the truth and never compromising on honesty, regardless of the situation. Even when difficulties appeared, he saw his father standing firm and facing challenges with courage. These qualities left a lasting impression on him and became values that he carried into every stage of his own life.
The influence of his father was reflected in the way he approached responsibilities later in life. Whether dealing with professional challenges, making important decisions, or handling difficult situations, the principle of remaining truthful and sincere continued to guide his actions. The importance of integrity became more than a lesson from childhood; it became a personal standard that shaped his character.
His mother, Late Lakshmi Amma, influenced him through her intelligence, practical understanding, and remarkable ability to handle situations. Although she did not receive formal education, he admired the sharpness of her mind and the way she understood matters with great clarity. Their family had coconut farms, and he often observed her ability to calculate and manage details with accuracy. He recalled moments when she could immediately identify incorrect calculations related to the sale of coconuts and recognise even small differences in amounts.
After spending his early years in Kerala, building his foundation through education, family values, and personal interests, Dr. Venugopal Kannoth entered a phase of life where discipline, responsibility, and service became central to his journey. The qualities developed during his formative years prepared him for an environment that demanded physical strength, mental resilience, and the ability to remain steady in challenging situations.
His educational journey had continued alongside his personal growth. After completing his early education in his hometown, he pursued his studies at college, where he developed not only academically but also through his involvement in sports. Football became an important part of his college life. His dedication to the game allowed him to represent his college, his city, and his university. The experience of playing at these levels gave him an opportunity to understand teamwork, commitment, and the importance of giving his best while representing something larger than himself.
The discipline that came from sports became an important part of his personality. Football required coordination, trust, and determination, qualities that later became valuable when he stepped into professional responsibilities. His time as a player helped him develop the ability to work with others, remain focused under pressure, and contribute as part of a team.
In 1974, a significant turning point arrived when he received his commission and joined the Border Security Force (BSF) as an officer. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter that was very different from his earlier experiences. Moving from academic life and sports into a disciplined force required a complete adjustment in mindset and lifestyle. He entered an environment where responsibility, courage, and commitment were not just expected qualities but essential parts of everyday life.
His training took place at the BSF Academy, Tekanpur, where he was introduced to the demands and discipline of service. The training prepared him for the responsibilities that came with being an officer. It required physical endurance, mental strength, and the ability to handle situations with confidence. His determination and physical capability helped him complete the demanding training successfully.
During this period, his strength and dedication also gave him the opportunity to undertake commando training. The following year, he completed his commando exercises, an achievement that reflected his physical toughness and willingness to take on demanding challenges. He embraced these experiences because he enjoyed the nature of the work and the responsibilities associated with serving in the force.
The years that Dr. Venugopal Kannoth spent with the Border Security Force (BSF) exposed him to situations that tested not only his professional abilities but also his personal strength. After entering service with determination and a strong sense of responsibility, he found himself working in environments where every decision carried serious consequences. His experiences in the north-eastern region became some of the most challenging and unforgettable chapters of his journey.
During his posting in the north-east, he became closely involved in operations connected with insurgency related activities. The nature of the assignment demanded alertness, courage, and the ability to make decisions under pressure. He valued the opportunity to serve in such an environment because the work was active, demanding, and filled with responsibilities that required complete commitment.
One of the most difficult moments of his service came during his posting in Jethambhari, Tripura. During an operation, he fired at six people, and unfortunately, two of them were civilians. The incident became a serious matter, particularly because there was a government in the state at that time. The situation received significant attention, and the BSF had to proceed with a court-martial process.
For Dr. Venugopal Kannoth, this was not simply an official proceeding; it was a deeply personal experience that stayed with him. He believed that he had acted in the circumstances he faced, and the force supported his decision. However, due to the situation at that time, he received a reprimand. Although he accepted the outcome, the incident became a moment of deep reflection for him.
The experience made him think about the long-term impact of decisions taken during intense situations. He continued to carry the memory of the civilians who lost their lives and acknowledged the emotional weight of that moment. He reflected that with the understanding and maturity he gained later in life, he might have approached the situation differently and taken more time before making such a decision.
This phase became one of the most significant lessons of his life. It taught him the importance of patience, reflection, and understanding the consequences of every decision. The experience remained a reminder that responsibility is not only about taking action but also about considering every possible outcome.

– Dr. Venugopal Kannoth
