A person’s journey is rarely defined by a single achievement or moment of success. It is shaped by the experiences that influence character, the challenges that encourage growth, and the choices that gradually reveal purpose. The life of Dr. Thomas Patrick Beswick-Brown reflects such a journey: learning, dedication, integrity, and the desire to support others have remained constant throughout every stage of his development.
From his early years, Dr. Thomas was surrounded by values that would later become central to his professional identity. The guidance of his family helped shape his understanding of respect, responsibility, honesty, and the importance of treating people with care. These principles became the foundation upon which he built his relationships, his career, and his approach towards helping others.
His path was not one of immediate academic success. In his younger years, education was something he struggled to connect with, but life gradually showed him the importance of learning and personal growth. With each passing year, he understood more deeply that education is not a phase but a constant companion, one that grows with us and guides us towards who we are meant to become.
Over the years, Dr. Thomas transformed his own experiences into opportunities for others. His professional journey moved from early working experiences into training, leadership, consultancy, and education. He developed a deep understanding of how knowledge, encouragement, and guidance can influence people’s confidence and progress. His passion for teaching and mentoring became one of the strongest expressions of his purpose.
As the founder and managing director of TPB-Group Ltd, he built a professional path centred on occupational safety, health, environmental management, quality, governance, and organisational improvement. His work has supported organisations across different sectors while maintaining a focus on practical solutions, professional development, and sustainable progress. His approach has always been influenced by the belief that meaningful improvement comes through trust, understanding, and commitment.
His connection with the occupational safety and health profession has also been marked by significant contributions and service. Through his involvement with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), he has supported the development of professionals, contributed to assessments, shared knowledge, and participated in initiatives focused on strengthening professional standards. Achieving Chartered Fellowship of IOSH represents important recognition of his dedication and contribution to the field.
Before Dr. Thomas Patrick Beswick-Brown, also known as Tom BB, began his work in health and safety, professional education, and mentoring, his foundations were built through the ordinary moments of childhood that quietly shaped the person he would become. The values that guided his professional life did not appear suddenly in later years. They were formed through family experiences, early lessons, personal relationships, and the examples set by the people closest to him.
Growing up in a family where discipline, respect, and responsibility were deeply valued, he learned early that character was reflected in the way a person treated others and conducted themselves. His father, who had served in the army and later worked as a wagon driver, brought a strong sense of discipline into the household. From him, Dr. Thomas learned the importance of morals, presentation, communication, and respect. The expectations were clear: stand properly, present yourself well, and understand the importance of how you interact with people.
Yet alongside that discipline was another important influence. His mother gave him something equally valuable: a sense of humour and warmth. Through her work looking after older people, he observed the importance of kindness and connection. The ability to make people feel comfortable and valued became something he carried throughout his own life. Later, when he worked with teams, learners, and organisations, the ability to connect with people became one of the qualities that supported his relationships.
Among the strongest influences of his early years was his grandfather, Grandad Jack. The lessons he received from him went beyond practical skills. One memory remained especially meaningful. While working on an old car, he was learning how to change the brake pads, or brake shoes, as they were known at the time. With the vehicle raised and his feet positioned underneath it, he was unaware of the danger involved. His grandfather noticed the situation, pulled him away, and explained the seriousness of what could have happened. Instead of simply warning him, he spent time teaching him how to complete the task safely.
That moment became more than a childhood lesson. It represented the importance of experience, guidance, and looking after oneself. The principles behind that memory would later connect naturally with the work he dedicated his career to, where safety and responsibility became central parts of his professional purpose.
For Dr. Thomas Patrick Beswick-Brown, the journey towards education did not begin with a natural love for classrooms or textbooks. In fact, his early years were shaped by the opposite experience. Learning was something he struggled to connect with, and school was not a place where he felt motivated or inspired. Yet, with time and experience, he came to understand that education was not simply about what happened inside a classroom. It was about gaining the knowledge, confidence, and understanding needed to shape a better future.
As a young student, he openly recognised that he was not focused on academics. He was more interested in friendships, activities, and exploring the world around him. The traditional school environment did not appeal to him, and he often found himself wanting to avoid it rather than engage with it. However, beneath that lack of interest was a person who was still learning through experience, observation, and the people around him.
His years at Townley High School were challenging. Although he acknowledged that it was a good school, he found the strict environment difficult to adapt to. The separation from familiar friendships and the structure of the school affected his experience. He felt disconnected and found it difficult to build the same sense of belonging that he had enjoyed elsewhere. The experience left him with the feeling that education needed more than lessons and rules; it required understanding, encouragement, and connection.
However, his earlier educational journey was not without positive moments. His time at Saint Stephen’s Junior School gave him an experience that stayed with him. The teachers there spent time supporting him, and one person who made a particular difference was Mrs. Anne Dickinson. She encouraged him, helped him learn, and gave him the confidence to achieve something he was proud of. When she taught him his nine times table and he later received a book award, it became a meaningful moment because it showed him the importance of someone believing in his ability.
At that stage of life, he did not yet realise how important such encouragement would become. Years later, when he would guide learners and mentor professionals himself, he would carry forward the understanding that people grow when someone takes the time to support them.
After leaving school at the age of 15, Dr. Thomas entered working life. His first experience was in a factory, where the work was physically demanding and very different from anything he had imagined for himself. It was a practical introduction to responsibility, independence, and earning his own living. Although the work was difficult, it gave him an important sense of achievement because he was able to contribute and experience the value of earning through his own effort.
After spending time working in factories and taking on different roles, Dr. Thomas Patrick Beswick-Brown began to understand that he had greater potential than his work at the time allowed him to express. He recognised that experience had given him practical knowledge, but further learning would provide the tools to progress. This understanding encouraged him to return to education, this time with a clear purpose and personal motivation.
Unlike his earlier years, where education felt disconnected from his ambitions, this stage of learning was a conscious choice. He was no longer studying because he was expected to; he was learning because he wanted to create new opportunities for himself. This change in mindset became one of the most important turning points in his journey.
Returning to education at Burnley College gave him a very different experience from the one he had known as a younger student. He found that the teachers and lecturers focused on helping people understand rather than simply complete a course. They invested time in their students, ensuring that knowledge was properly developed rather than merely passed on.
This approach had a lasting effect on him. It showed him the difference that supportive education could make in someone’s life. The encouragement he received became an example that he would later carry into his own work, where teaching and mentoring became central parts of his professional purpose.
The connection he developed with Burnley College continued long after his own studies. Years later, he returned to the institution as a senior trainer, delivering health and safety training for higher qualifications. For him, this represented a meaningful continuation of his own learning journey. The place where he once returned as a student became a place where he could contribute his own knowledge and experience to others.
As his confidence grew, Dr. Thomas continued developing himself academically and professionally. His journey included self-study, professional qualifications, and further education that gradually expanded his knowledge and capabilities. He later completed his first degree at Huddersfield University, an achievement that reflected the determination he had developed through years of experience.
His academic journey continued at Leeds Beckett University, where he pursued advanced learning in health and safety. Completing his master’s degree in Health and Safety was a significant personal achievement because it represented not only academic success but also the result of persistence and commitment. It demonstrated that learning could continue at any stage of life when a person was willing to invest time and effort in growth.
A life built on knowledge, commitment, and the trust of others is never created alone. Dr. Thomas Patrick Beswick-Brown acknowledges the many individuals who have contributed to his personal and professional development, each leaving a meaningful influence through their guidance, encouragement, and support.
He expresses his deepest appreciation to his wife, Louise, whose constant encouragement, honesty, and dedication have remained an important source of support throughout his work and responsibilities. Her belief in him and her contribution to the growth of TPB-Group Ltd have been deeply valued.
He also extends his gratitude to his sister-in-law, Sue Lea, and daughter-in-law, Arnietia McGarry, whose commitment and involvement have contributed to the continued functioning and development of the organisation. Their dedication reflects the importance of trust and shared responsibility in achieving meaningful outcomes.
Dr. Thomas remains grateful to the educators and mentors who encouraged him during his academic development, especially Tim Briggs and Amy Brandreth from Leeds Beckett University. Their guidance and encouragement supported him during important moments of learning and gave him the confidence to continue pursuing his goals.
He also recognises the many professionals, learners, colleagues, and individuals who have shared their experiences with him over the years. Every interaction has contributed to his understanding of people, education, and the importance of sharing knowledge.
This note of thanks reflects his appreciation for those who have walked alongside him, offered guidance, and placed their trust in his abilities. For Dr. Thomas, the greatest value of any achievement lies in the relationships created, the knowledge exchanged, and the positive influence that continues through others.
thanks,
– Dr. Thomas Patrick Beswick-Brown
