"Curiosity is what starts the journey, purpose is what keeps us moving, and the lives we touch along the way are what make it all worthwhile."

Introduction

Every person holds within them a gathering of moments, decisions, and convictions that slowly form the person they grow into. For Dr. Mohamed Heikal Bin Mohamed Yusope, education has never been simply a career. It has been a lifelong devotion to understanding others, nurturing ability, and building pathways for progress.

Growing up in a modest yet loving home, Dr. Heikal learned early on to value appreciation, determination, and hard work. These childhood lessons shaped how he viewed achievement and gave him the drive to reach beyond what seemed possible. Later, these same qualities found their way into his teaching, where curiosity, imagination, and genuine human connection became the heart of his everyday work.

His academic path reflected his desire to understand education and human development from different perspectives. Beginning with formal training in physical education at Nanyang Technological University, he continued to expand his knowledge through his Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement Studies at The University of Queensland, where he achieved Honours Class 1. He later pursued a Master of Science in Exercise and Sports Studies and later enrolled in the Doctor of Education at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, focusing on areas related to teacher motivation and self determination, workplace pressures, job satisfaction and job stress, and the various factors that influence effective teaching.

For Dr. Heikal, learning was never limited to a single area. His professional experiences allowed him to understand education across multiple levels, from secondary schools and junior colleges to polytechnic education, vocational education and training, adult learning, and international teaching. This broad exposure strengthened his belief that educators must understand not only what students learn, but also how they think, feel, and develop as individuals.

His transition into education began with a significant turning point during his National Service with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), which earned him the SCDF Commanders Commendation Award. It was during his vocation as a Specialist Trainer where his ability to plan, guide and instruct others was recognised. This experience encouraged him to pursue teaching, leading him towards a profession where he could combine communication, leadership, and his desire to inspire others. As he entered the classroom, he discovered that teaching involved much more than delivering lessons. It required understanding students, supporting their challenges, and helping them recognise their own abilities.

Throughout his career, Dr. Heikal continued to expand his contribution to education. His work in schools, including his initiatives at Millennia Institute, demonstrated his ability to combine scientific knowledge with student development. Through the Human Performance Programme, he introduced sports science concepts such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition, and performance tracking to support collegiate athletes. His approach showed that achievement could be strengthened when knowledge was combined with structured guidance and motivation.

His commitment to developing students as complete individuals continued through his work at Republic Polytechnic, where he contributed to sports and exercise sciences, student wellness, mentoring, counselling, and student leadership programmes. He believed that academic success required more than intellectual ability. Physical wellbeing, emotional strength, discipline, and personal purpose were equally important in helping individuals reach their potential.

"A person’s roots may be planted in ordinary places, but with determination and hope, they can grow towards extraordinary possibilities."

Phase 1: The Foundations Built in a Humble Home of Yishun

Before he became an educator, researcher, and leader across different areas of education, Dr. Mohamed Heikal Bin Mohamed Yusope was a young boy growing up in the northern part of Singapore, in a place called Yishun. His beginnings were simple, but they were filled with the kind of experiences that quietly shape a person’s outlook, character, and understanding of the world.

He describes himself as a “true blue Singaporean”, someone whose roots are deeply connected to the country where he was raised. Singapore was a small island, but for him, it was a place filled with memories, lessons, and opportunities. His childhood took place within a modest three-room apartment shared with his parents, elder brother, and younger sister. It was not a home defined by abundance, but it was a home filled with care, support, and togetherness.

His parents worked hard to provide for the family. His father first served as a fireman and later took on labour related work. His mother worked as a cook and operated a stall in a school when he was young. Watching both parents dedicate themselves to their responsibilities gave him an early understanding of effort and commitment. Their work was not always easy, but their dedication created a stable and loving environment for their children.

For Dr. Heikal, those years were not defined by what his family lacked but by what those circumstances taught him. Growing up without having everything he wished for encouraged him to appreciate what he had and to work towards what he wanted to achieve. The simplicity of his surroundings helped him understand that progress comes through effort, patience, and determination.

He recalls his childhood as a humble but encouraging environment. Although his family lived modestly, he never viewed those experiences negatively. Instead, they became part of the foundation that shaped his ambitions. The inability to have everything during his younger years created a desire within him and his siblings to strive for improvement. They learned to value opportunities and to believe that they could create a better future through their own efforts.

The importance of family remained a strong part of his identity. He grew up with an elder brother and younger sister, and he later saw both of them build successful paths of their own. His brother went on to train security officers at Changi Airport, while his sister became a midwife and doula with her own business. Looking back, Dr. Heikal takes pride in how all three siblings progressed despite their modest beginnings.

The environment around him also played an important role in shaping his understanding of people. Growing up in a community setting allowed him to interact with different individuals and experience the importance of connection. His childhood was not spent surrounded by luxury, but it was filled with relationships, experiences, and lessons that stayed with him.

"The questions we ask as children never really leave us; they just grow into the answers we spend our lives discovering."

Phase 2 : The Curious Mind Behind the Future Educator

Long before Dr. Mohamed Heikal Bin Mohamed Yusope became known for guiding students, developing educational programmes and leading institutions, he was a child driven by creativity, curiosity and imagination. His early personality was shaped not only by classrooms and textbooks but also by the questions he asked, the worlds he created, and the possibilities he imagined.

As a young boy, he was deeply fascinated by the unknown. Around the age of eight or nine, he remembers taking an ordinary large box and transforming it in his imagination into a space shuttle craft. To others, it may have been just a simple box, but for him, it became a vehicle that could travel beyond the familiar and explore distant places. This ability to create new worlds from simple things reflected the creativity and curiosity that were already present in him from a very young age.

His interest in discovery extended into science and mysteries. He found himself drawn to topics such as the galaxies and constellations, the Bermuda Triangle, and the Great Pyramids. Stories filled with imagination and wonder captured his attention, including tales of dragons, dungeons, and the Pied Piper of Hamelin. These interests reflected a young mind that enjoyed exploring ideas, asking questions, and looking beyond what was immediately visible.

Alongside his fascination with science and exploration, he also found inspiration in the world of science fiction and superheroes. He was obsessed with Star Wars and remembers each and every character and planet in the Star Wars universe – from Luke Skywalker to Darth Vader to the Millennium Falcon and the Dagobah System. He also enjoyed reading comics from Marvel and DC Comics, with Spider-Man being his favourite Marvel character. He also grew up admiring characters such as Superman, Batman, the Justice League, and the Avengers. These stories became part of his childhood imagination and added another dimension to the way he viewed courage, possibilities, and the ability to make a difference.

However, his childhood was not spent only in books and imagination. Dr. Heikal was also an outgoing child who enjoyed being around people. He describes himself as an extrovert who loved conversations, friendships, and spending time with others. He was rarely confined indoors and preferred being outside with his friends, riding his bicycle, exploring the neighbourhood, and creating games through imagination.

Many of his childhood moments came from simple activities shared with friends. He recalls creating imaginary adventures, such as setting up a tent and pretending to be like explorers from another world. These experiences allowed him to develop creativity while also strengthening his ability to interact with people. The freedom to explore, communicate, and build friendships became an important part of his personal development.

Looking back, Dr. Heikal believes these early experiences contributed greatly to the person he became. His childhood interactions helped him develop the ability to connect with others, build relationships easily, and communicate confidently. These qualities later became essential in his roles as a teacher, mentor, speaker, and leader.

"The memories created through friendships, challenges, and experiences outside the classroom often become the quiet teachers we carry forever."

Phase 3 : Discovering Discipline, Leadership, and the Love for Learning

As Dr. Mohamed Heikal Bin Mohamed Yusope entered his school years, the curiosity and imagination that shaped his childhood began to find new expressions through learning, activities, and interactions with others. His education became more than a place for academic development. It became a space where he discovered discipline, leadership, teamwork, and the importance of exploring different abilities.

His schooling at Yishun Secondary School, located close to his home, became an important period where his interests continued to expand. While academics remained an essential part of his development, he was never someone who limited himself to the classroom alone. He believed in experiencing different aspects of growth, whether through sports, creative activities, leadership responsibilities, or meaningful connections with people around him.

From his early school years, Dr. Heikal showed a strong inclination towards physical activities and competition. He participated actively in athletics, taking part in events such as the 100 metres, 200 metres, and 4 by 100 metres relay races. Running became one of the ways through which he experienced discipline, commitment, and the satisfaction that comes from consistent effort.

His involvement in sports was not limited to athletics. He explored different areas and became deeply engaged in school activities. During his secondary school years, he participated in multiple co-curricular activities (CCA), reflecting his willingness to learn from different experiences and work with diverse groups of people.

He was involved in soccer, badminton, cross country, and track and field. Each activity provided him with different lessons, from teamwork and coordination to personal responsibility and perseverance. However, his interests extended beyond sports. He also participated in traditional dance, an experience that allowed him to explore creativity and performance in a different form.

Another significant responsibility he embraced was serving as a school counsellor and prefect. Through the prefectorial board, he took on the role of a student leader, where he gained early exposure to responsibility and supporting others. These experiences helped him understand the importance of communication, trust, and being present for people who needed guidance.

His active involvement meant that his days were often filled with activities beyond regular school hours. He recalls that his mother would often notice how late he returned home, sometimes around 7 pm, because he was constantly engaged in school programmes and activities. For him, these experiences were opportunities to discover himself and interact with others.
