Born on 12 May 1970 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Gwendolyn’s early life was shaped by a blend of rich cultural influences and the deep-rooted values of her family. Raised in a household where the challenges of World War II shaped her parents’ lives, she was the youngest of three children. Her mother, born in Indonesia, lived through the war before relocating to the Netherlands and then onwards to Canada. Her father, who had lived through the war in The Netherlands, also relocated to Canada and worked for Philips, a company that developed medical systems and devices. This served as her first connection to the healthcare industry.
This foundation provided Gwendolyn with a unique perspective on the value of healthcare and innovation from a young age. She spent part of her childhood in Switzerland (every school holiday), which exposed her to international environments, an experience that would later prove instrumental in her career. As of age 5, she was in Switzerland during every school holiday, about 10 to 12 weeks per year. In 1983 she moved to Switzerland with her parents for 1.5 years. After they moved back to The Netherlands, after a year and a half at an international school, Gwendolyn continued at the International Secondary School of Eindhoven. This exposure allowed her to engage in bilingual education, speaking both Dutch and English, and laid the groundwork for the success she would go on to achieve in her professional life. In Eindhoven, she passed the O-levels examination (14 subjects) and continued to do the International Baccalaureate (6 subjects and 2 additional certificates).
As a student, she displayed determination and adaptability throughout her academic years. Initially drawn to economics, Gwendolyn quickly realized that her true calling lay in the medical sciences, enrolling at Maastricht University. There, her curiosity about healthcare management and biomedical science blossomed. Gwendolyn’s commitment to her studies led to her graduating with a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, with a major in Healthcare Management & Economics. Her summa cum laude thesis, which analyzed the impact of government measures on the reimbursement of oral contraceptives, laid the groundwork for her entry into the pharmaceutical world. She conducted the abovementioned Master`s research/Thesis at Organon, and this is also where her career began. Towards the end of her tenure at Ferring, she was also involved in the area of clinical research and monitored several clinical trials. This experience was instrumental for her decision to continue her career within medical affairs in the pharmaceutical industry, with touchpoints with clinical development, as opposed to focuse solely on clinical research.
Her career began at Organon, a pharmaceutical company specializing in women’s health, where she worked for four years. It was here that Gwendolyn first entered the world of medical sales, working as an area manager. The role introduced her to the complexities of the pharmaceutical industry and gave her the foundation to build a career that would combine scientific knowledge with practical solutions for patient care. From there, she transitioned to Ferring Pharmaceuticals, where she focused on infertility and obstetrics for another four years. During these early roles, she developed a keen interest in clinical research and medical affairs, paving the way for her eventual role as a global leader in medical affairs.

Phase 1: Early Life and Family Background
Dr. ( H. C. ) Gwendolyn van Solingen’s journey to becoming a leading figure in the pharmaceutical industry began long before her professional career took shape. Born on 12 May 1970 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Gwendolyn’s early life was shaped by her parents and the state of the world that they lived in. The experiences and choices of her parents were passed down to their youngest daughter as a heritage that will shape the later years of her life.
Gwendolyn grew up in a family as the youngest of three. Her mother, a Dutch national, was born in Indonesia and spent the first 22 years of her life there before moving to Canada. Her father, also born in The Netherlands, moved to Canada. They met and got married in Montreal, Canada, where Gwendolyn’s eldest sister was born.
During that time, her father worked for Philips, a company that would come to symbolize her first connection to the healthcare industry. Philips was not only known for its work in lighting, televisions and electronic devices but also in medical systems and devices, and although Gwendolyn was still very young, the presence of such an influential company in her family’s life sparked an early interest in healthcare. This exposure to medical technology would serve as a foundation for her future career, despite Gwendolyn’s unawareness of its profound impact on her life at that time.
Her parents’ experiences and the values they emphasised shaped Gwendolyn’s formative years. Her mother, a teacher of English, instilled in her children a love for language and learning. It was particularly significant for Gwendolyn, who would later become known for her exceptional communication skills, whether in medical settings or professional relationships. Her mother’s educational influence helped to foster a deep appreciation for knowledge, especially in the fields of science and literature, which would become central to Gwendolyn’s academic and professional pursuits.
Gwendolyn’s grew up in the village of Son & Breugel, next to the city of Eindhoven, immersed in a culture of intellectual curiosity and innovation. Her father’s job drove the family’s move to Eindhoven in the early 1960s, despite having no deep-rooted connections to the city. Philips had a significant presence in the city.
The next chapter of Gwendolyn life took an even more international turn when her family moved to Switzerland in 1983. This relocation, which lasted for approximately one and a half years, exposed her to an entirely different cultural and educational environment. While in Switzerland, she attended an international school, an experience that further broadened her worldview. The period also played a critical role in shaping her linguistic skills, as she became fluent in English and added German to her repertoire. The time spent in Switzerland marked the beginning of her growing appreciation for global perspectives, an outlook that would serve her well in her later roles, where international collaboration and cross-cultural communication were essential.

In her first year of university, Gwendolyn found herself struggling to connect with the subjects that economics demanded. Although she excelled academically, she could not shake the feeling that her true calling lay elsewhere. The realization that economics was not the right fit was a turning point for her, one that would ultimately guide her toward the field of biomedical sciences. Recognizing her passion for healthcare, Gwendolyn made the bold decision to transition into the biomedical sciences program at Maastricht University during her Propaedeutic Year.
This shift in life was not without its challenges. Transitioning mid-year from one discipline to another meant that Gwendolyn had to quickly catch up with her new course material. The rigor of the biomedical sciences program, demanded a great deal of effort and dedication. However, Gwendolyn was determined to succeed. She took extra exams during the summer months and put in the hours needed to grasp the complex material, all while maintaining the high standards she had set for herself.
Her commitment and determination paid off. By the end of her first year in biomedical sciences, Gwendolyn had not only caught up with her peers but had also demonstrated exceptional aptitude for her new field. It was during this time that she discovered her deep interest in healthcare management, a discipline that combined her academic strengths in economics with her newfound passion for healthcare and life sciences.
