“A legacy is not built on the number of cases you win. It is built on the number of lives you change, the burdens you ease, and the hope you restore.”

Introduction

The journey of Dr. Dayanand Marutirao Birajdar is a reflection of determination shaped by values, guided by discipline, and strengthened by a lifelong commitment to serving people. His life represents the path of an individual who carried forward the teachings received in his early years and transformed them into meaningful contributions through law, taxation, social responsibility, and community service.

Born on 6 April 1957, he grew up in a farming family where simplicity, hard work, and responsibility were part of everyday life. His parents, Marutirao Govindrao Birajdar and Saraswatibai Marutirao Birajdar, played an important role in shaping his understanding of life. His father, while being connected with farming, also served as a Secretary in the Cooperative Department and remained involved in business activities whenever possible. His mother guided him with values that stayed with him throughout his journey, including truthfulness, discipline, spirituality, consistency, and respect for others. These early lessons became the foundation upon which he built his personal and professional life.

Education became an important chapter in his growth, supported by the encouragement of his elder brothers. Prof. Vinayak Marutirao Birajdar, who served as a Professor of Economics at Dayanand College, Latur, played a significant role in guiding his education. His brother Dr. Jivan Marutirao Birajdar, who was associated with Parbhani Agricultural University, also contributed to his encouragement and development. With their support, he completed his education and continued moving towards a future where his knowledge could become a tool for service.

During his student years, he developed qualities of leadership, discipline, and confidence through various activities. His involvement with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) became a significant part of his formative years. As a Senior Under Officer (SUO), he participated in camps and leadership programmes, including an Advance Leadership Camp with Rock Climbing at Darjeeling. These experiences strengthened his sense of responsibility and helped shape the disciplined approach that later became visible in his professional journey.

He completed his advocate registration in September 1982 and began his legal practice. Over the years, he dedicated himself to understanding taxation and legal matters with continuous study and commitment. His professional journey was not limited to courtroom responsibilities; he focused on using his legal knowledge to assist individuals who needed proper guidance and representation.

A significant part of his professional identity developed through land acquisition practice. Inspired by observing legal professionals helping farmers during his younger years, he developed a strong desire to support people whose lands were acquired. Through his work in land acquisition matters, he represented numerous landowners and farmers, helping them receive better compensation. His approach was guided by preparation, research, and the belief that every case required sincere effort and complete dedication.

“The strongest foundations of life are built through the values we receive at home, the lessons we learn from our elders, and the discipline we carry in every step we take.”

Phase 1: Roots of Discipline – Childhood, Family Values and Early Influences

Every meaningful journey begins with a foundation, and for Dr. Dayanand Marutirao Birajdar, that foundation was created in a simple environment where hard work, responsibility, and values were considered more important than comfort. His early years were shaped by the experiences of a farming family, where dedication towards work and respect for others were part of everyday life. The principles he learned during his childhood became the guiding force behind the choices he made later in life.

Born on 6 April 1957, he grew up in a family where perseverance and honesty were deeply respected. His parents, Marutirao Govindrao Birajdar and Saraswatibai Marutirao Birajdar, played a significant role in shaping his understanding of life. Coming from a farming background, the family was familiar with the importance of effort, patience, and commitment. The environment around him taught him that every achievement requires sincerity and continuous work.

His father, Marutirao Govindrao Birajdar, carried multiple responsibilities throughout his life. Along with being connected to farming, he worked as a Secretary in the Cooperative Department. He also remained involved in business activities whenever he found time. His ability to manage different responsibilities became an example of dedication and discipline for the family. Through his actions, he demonstrated the importance of remaining committed to one’s duties while continuing to move forward.

His mother, Saraswatibai Marutirao Birajdar, contributed greatly to the values that became a permanent part of his personality. She guided him towards living with discipline, kindness, and spiritual awareness. The lessons he received from her were simple yet powerful: waking up early, beginning the day with prayer, remaining consistent in work, and never speaking negatively about others. These teachings stayed with him throughout his personal and professional journey, influencing the way he interacted with people and approached responsibilities.

The family atmosphere encouraged learning and personal growth. His journey towards education was supported by his elder brothers, whose guidance became an important part of his development. His elder brother, Prof. Vinayak Marutirao Birajdar, was a Professor of Economics at Dayanand College, Latur. During his educational years, he received valuable support and guidance from him. The encouragement provided by his family helped him continue his studies and build confidence in his abilities.

Another important influence in his life was his brother, Dr. Jivan Marutirao Birajdar, who served as a Professor at Parbhani Agricultural University. The support and encouragement from his elder brothers created an environment where education was valued and opportunities were encouraged. Their belief in his potential played an important role in helping him complete his education and prepare himself for the professional journey ahead.

“True education is not limited to classrooms; it is shaped by the experiences that teach discipline, responsibility, confidence, and the courage to take on greater challenges.

Phase 2 : Building Confidence Through Learning

The early educational journey of Dr. Dayanand Marutirao Birajdar was not only a period of academic growth but also a time when his personality, leadership abilities, and sense of responsibility began to take shape. The support he received from his family created a strong foundation for learning, while his own dedication helped him explore opportunities beyond academics. During these formative years, he developed qualities that later became an important part of his professional life.

With the encouragement of his elder brothers, particularly Prof. Vinayak Marutirao Birajdar and Dr. Jivan Marutirao Birajdar, he continued his education with determination. His academic journey took him to Dayanand Commerce College, Latur, where he pursued commerce studies. The environment of learning, combined with his interest in personal development, allowed him to participate in various activities that helped him grow beyond the boundaries of formal education.

During his college years, his association with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) became one of the most significant experiences of his student life. The NCC introduced him to a structured environment where discipline, leadership, teamwork, and responsibility were given great importance. Through this platform, he developed qualities that strengthened his confidence and prepared him to handle responsibilities in different situations.

While pursuing his studies, he became a part of the 53 Maharashtra Battalion NCC, Latur, under the Senior Division Army Wing. His dedication and involvement earned him the rank of Senior Under Officer (SUO). This position reflected the trust placed in his abilities and his commitment towards the responsibilities assigned to him. His role as a Senior Under Officer provided him with valuable experiences in guiding and coordinating with fellow cadets.

In 1976, he attended an NCC camp at Belgaon, where he served as a Senior Under Officer. During this camp, the candidates who participated were placed under his guidance, giving him an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and responsibility. The experience helped him understand the importance of coordination, discipline, and supporting others while working towards a common objective.

His dedication towards NCC activities continued to grow, and in 1977, he participated in an Advance Leadership Camp with Rock Climbing at Darjeeling. The camp was a significant milestone in his student journey. It brought together 114 candidates from across India, and he served as a Senior Under Officer during this programme as well. The month-long experience at Darjeeling became a memorable part of his life, strengthening his confidence and broadening his understanding of leadership.

“The right choice is not always the easiest one; sometimes it is the decision that demands courage, patience, and belief in one’s own purpose.”

Phase 3 : Choosing Law Over Security

There are moments in life when a single decision shapes the direction of the years that follow. For Dr. Dayanand Marutirao Birajdar, one such moment came after completing his graduation, when he had to decide between a secure government career and the uncertain yet meaningful path of law. The choice he made during that period reflected not only his personal aspirations but also the confidence and guidance of the people who believed in his abilities.

After completing his B.Com. in 1978, he had already built a strong foundation through education, discipline, and various experiences during his student years. His academic journey had prepared him to take the next step, and opportunities were beginning to open before him. At this stage, he received opportunities to enter government service. In 1977, he received an appointment opportunity for the position of PSI, and in 1978, he received an appointment letter for the post of Divisional Accountant in Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB).

These opportunities offered a stable professional path, but his journey was influenced by the vision his elder brother had for him. Prof. Vinayak Marutirao Birajdar, who had supported his education and guided him throughout his formative years, encouraged him not to choose government service. Instead, he believed that Dr. Dayanand Marutirao Birajdar should pursue law and build a career as an advocate. The confidence shown by his elder brother became an important influence in his decision-making process.

Respecting this guidance, he chose to follow the path of legal education. It was a decision that required commitment and a willingness to accept challenges, as building a career in advocacy demanded patience, continuous learning, and dedication. However, the values instilled in him during his childhood and the discipline developed through his educational experiences gave him the strength to move forward with confidence.

He took admission to Dayanand College of Law, Latur, where he began his journey into the legal field. The years spent studying law helped him develop a deeper understanding of legal principles and prepared him for the responsibilities that came with the profession. While his earlier education had developed his analytical abilities and communication skills, legal education gave him the opportunity to apply those qualities in a field connected with people’s concerns and challenges.

During this period, he continued to remain connected with practical responsibilities as well. Alongside his studies, he looked after the family’s Saraswati Seed corporation. This experience allowed him to understand the importance of managing commitments and balancing different responsibilities. It also reflected the sense of responsibility that had been a part of his upbringing.
