Before Dr. Ashutosh Srivastava became known for his work in forensic science, his journey began in a modest family environment where values mattered more than circumstances. Born on 21 November 1971 in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, he grew up in a middle-class household where every responsibility carried importance and every effort made by the family was connected with building a better future. His early years were shaped by the realities of a family where resources were limited, but the commitment towards education and personal growth remained strong.
He was one of three brothers and held the position of the middle child, with one elder brother and one younger brother. His father, Maniram Srivastava, worked as a government employee and was the only earning member of the family. Supporting and educating three children was a responsibility that rested on his shoulders, and Dr. Ashutosh understood from an early age the dedication and effort that went behind creating opportunities for the family. The circumstances of his childhood taught him the importance of responsibility and made him aware of the value of hard work.
His mother, Vimla Devi, played an equally important role within the family. As a homemaker, she looked after the children and provided the care and support that helped create a stable environment during their growing years. The balance between his father’s discipline and his mother’s nurturing care became an important part of his upbringing. These early experiences quietly shaped the person he would become in the years ahead.
The environment in which he grew up left a lasting impression on his personality. Dr. Ashutosh described himself as a sincere and disciplined child who remained focused on his education. He was not someone who was overly playful or involved in unnecessary activities; instead, he carried a natural seriousness towards learning and responsibilities from an early age. Discipline became one of the strongest principles of his life, a value that continued to guide him personally and professionally.
For him, discipline was never limited to following rules. It represented a way of approaching life with honesty, punctuality, and sincerity. He later carried these qualities into his professional journey, where accuracy, responsibility, and dedication became essential parts of his work. Looking back at the roots of these values, he connected them strongly with the influence of his father. Maniram Srivastava was someone he admired for his honesty, and Dr. Ashutosh believed that many of these qualities were inherited from the example set before him.
For Dr. Ashutosh Srivastava, education was never only about completing examinations or earning qualifications. It was a process of understanding, exploring, and developing a way of thinking that would later become an important part of his professional journey. The foundation of his learning began in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, where his early academic years introduced him to the importance of knowledge, discipline, and curiosity.
His schooling began through the local education system, where he continued his studies with sincerity and focus. He completed his early education at Government Inter College, Bahraich, building the academic base that would guide him towards further studies. During his school years, he developed an interest in scientific subjects and showed a particular liking for Mathematics and Physics. These subjects appealed to him because they encouraged logical thinking, understanding, and the ability to look at problems from different perspectives.
After completing his school education, he continued his studies in the science stream. His academic path reflected a consistent connection with scientific learning, gradually expanding his understanding of the natural world and analytical thinking. His education was not pursued in isolation from his life experiences. The discipline and seriousness he had developed during his childhood continued to influence the way he approached his studies.
His academic journey eventually led him towards biological sciences. He pursued a Bachelor of Science in Botany, Zoology, and Chemistry, which strengthened his understanding of different scientific areas. Through these subjects, he gained exposure to various branches of science and developed a broader perspective of how different disciplines connect with one another.
The subjects he studied during his undergraduate years created a strong scientific foundation. His learning covered areas related to plant sciences, animal sciences, chemistry, and other scientific concepts. This combination of subjects later became valuable when he entered the field of forensic science, a discipline where knowledge from different scientific branches comes together to examine and understand evidence.
Although forensic science was not his original subject of study, Dr. Ashutosh later recognised the connection between his educational background and his professional field. He explained that forensic science is a combination of multiple sciences, where chemistry, physics, zoology, botany, and other areas contribute towards scientific examination. His academic journey gave him the ability to understand this interdisciplinary nature of the field.
After completing his undergraduate studies, he continued his pursuit of higher education with a Master of Science in Zoology from Alagappa University. This stage represented another step forward in his academic growth, allowing him to explore scientific concepts at a deeper level. His postgraduate education expanded his understanding of areas connected with zoological sciences and strengthened his scientific approach.
His decision to continue education after entering professional life also reflects an important aspect of his personality. He shared that after receiving his job, his focus was initially more centred on his professional responsibilities. Later, after marriage, his wife, Anita Pundir, encouraged him to continue his academic growth. Her support motivated him to pursue further education and continue learning alongside his career.
There are moments in life when circumstances create a need for change, and the decisions made during those moments shape the direction of the years that follow. For Dr. Ashutosh Srivastava, one such defining period came when his family was approaching an important transition. His father, Maniram Srivastava, was nearing retirement in 1996, and as the only earning member of the family, his responsibilities had always been significant. At that stage, securing a stable career became an important priority for the family.
With a clear sense of responsibility towards his future and his family, Dr. Ashutosh focused on finding an opportunity that would allow him to begin his professional journey. In 1995, he was selected in the Forensic Science Laboratory, Uttar Pradesh, an opportunity that became the beginning of a lifelong association with forensic science.
