"The beauty of growth lies in carrying a curious mind and a willingness to keep learning."

Introduction

Every meaningful journey begins with a foundation of values, choices, and experiences that quietly shape the person one becomes. The life journey of Dr. Anita Pundir reflects the story of a dedicated scientist whose path has been defined by learning, perseverance, responsibility, and a commitment to serving society through knowledge and expertise.

She was raised in a home where discipline was not just taught but lived. Education was never negotiable, and determination was simply part of the daily rhythm. Her parents, the late Ram Pratap Singh Pundhir and Bhoodevi, were not just supporters; they were her quiet strength and her first believers. In a time when not every girl got the chance to chase higher education, their faith in her never wavered. They made sure she kept going, not because it was easy, but because they believed she was worth every effort. That belief became her anchor.

Her academic journey reflects a strong connection with science and a desire to continue learning. From her early education in Aligarh to her higher studies, she developed a strong foundation that later guided her towards a specialised scientific career. Her interest in subjects such as Biology and Chemistry became a part of the larger journey that eventually led her into the field of forensic science.

Beginning her professional journey as a Scientific Assistant at Forensic Science Laboratory, Agra, in 1998, Dr. Anita entered a field that demanded accuracy, patience, and immense responsibility. Over nearly three decades, she developed expertise across different areas of forensic science, including serology, chemistry, and DNA fingerprinting. Her career progressed through various roles such as such as Senior Scientific Assistant and Scientific Officer, followed by responsibilities as Deputy Director at FSL Moradabad and presently at FSL Ghaziabad, where she manages technical and administrative responsibilities.

Throughout her career, Dr. Anita has contributed to numerous DNA fingerprinting cases, supported scientific teams, and played an important role in strengthening forensic capabilities. Her experience in handling complex cases reflects not only scientific expertise but also the responsibility of using evidence-based knowledge to support justice. Her leadership in challenging situations and her efforts to guide younger scientists demonstrate her belief in sharing knowledge and helping others grow.

The story of Dr. Anita Pundir is not only about a career built in forensic science; it is about the determination to move forward, the courage to overcome challenges, and the belief that sincere efforts can create meaningful impact. Her journey offers a reflection of how education, perseverance, and dedication can transform aspirations into achievements while leaving a positive influence on the people and responsibilities connected to one’s work.

"Before a child knows the names of stars, they know the warmth of a home that lets them wonder. That is the first classroom, and the most lasting one."

Phase 1: Roots of Resilience : Childhood, Family Values, and the Making of a Learner

The foundation of every remarkable journey is built long before achievements begin to appear. For Dr. Anita Pundir, the earliest chapters of life were shaped by family values, a disciplined environment, and the encouragement to continue learning. Her childhood was spent in Kasimpur Power House, Harduaganj, Aligarh District, a place closely connected with her father’s professional life and the environment in which her curiosity, discipline, and determination gradually developed.

Born on 9 July 1973, Dr. Anita grew up in a family where education was respected and encouraged. Her father, Late Ram Pratap Singh Pundhir, worked as a Junior Engineer in the Hydel/Electricity Department, and his professional responsibilities shaped the surroundings of her early years. Her mother, Bhoodevi, was a homemaker whose support and encouragement became an important source of strength throughout her life. Together, they created an environment where education was not viewed merely as a qualification but as a means of building confidence and independence.

The values instilled by her parents became a guiding force in her journey. Her father strongly believed that educating a girl meant strengthening an entire family. This belief was significant because, during that period, many girls were not encouraged to pursue higher education beyond a certain level. However, her parents saw education differently. They believed that knowledge would allow her to express herself, make her own decisions, and move forward with confidence.

Her childhood unfolded in the surroundings of Kasimpur Power House, where she began her education and spent her formative years. The environment around her provided the first stage of her learning journey. She completed her schooling there, continuing her education through high school and intermediate studies. These early years created the academic foundation that would later guide her towards a career in science.

During her school life, Biology became her favourite subject. Her interest in the subject reflected her natural curiosity towards understanding the world of science. She was not particularly involved in sports and cultural activities, but she actively participated in educational activities, competitions, and scholarship examinations. Her focus remained on learning and academic development, showing the early signs of the dedication that would later define her professional life.

“Learning isn’t about collecting facts. It’s about letting each one reshape your view of the world.”

Phase 2 : Breaking Boundaries Through Education

Education became more than a journey of acquiring degrees for Dr. Anita Pundir; it became a path through which she discovered independence, confidence, and the courage to shape her own future. After building her foundation in Kasimpur Power House, Aligarh, she continued moving forward with a clear determination to learn and grow. Her academic journey reflects not only her interest in science but also the strength required to continue pursuing higher education when circumstances were not always easy.

After completing her early schooling, Dr. Anita continued her studies in the field of science. She completed her high school education from V.P. Kanya Inter College, Kasimpur, Aligarh, and later pursued her intermediate education from Kasimpur Power House, Aligarh. During these years, her interest in science continued to develop, and among all subjects, Biology remained her favourite. Her curiosity towards the subject reflected her natural inclination towards understanding life sciences, which later became an important part of her professional journey.

As she progressed towards higher education, Dr. Anita encountered challenges that were not related to her ability or ambition but to the social expectations surrounding girls’ education at that time. In the environment around her, higher education for girls was often viewed differently. Many believed that girls should study only to a certain level and that pursuing advanced qualifications was unnecessary. Some relatives questioned the need for further education and expressed concerns that higher studies might create difficulties in future marriage prospects. These opinions created pressure, not only for Dr. Anita but also for her family.

However, the support of her parents remained a constant source of strength. Her father, Late Ram Pratap Singh Pundhir, continued believing in the importance of her education, while her mother, Bhoodevi, encouraged her to become educated and capable of making her own decisions. Their support helped her continue moving forward despite the doubts and questions around her.

She shifted to Kanpur where her aunt and uncle lived. Being away from constant social questioning allowed her to concentrate more deeply on her studies. This period reflected her determination to create opportunities for herself rather than allowing external opinions to define her choices. She understood that continuing her education required both courage and commitment, and she chose to take responsibility for her own path.

Her decision to remain focused on building her career was also influenced by the circumstances around her. As discussions about marriage began increasing with time, she decided that she would not return until she had achieved professional stability. She wanted to establish herself through her own efforts and believed that securing her career first was important. This decision reflected her determination to create an identity built on education and professional achievement.

“Knowledge deepens when the mind remains willing to explore beyond what is already known.”

Phase 3 : Expanding Horizons : Higher Studies, Medical Exposure, and the Search for Purpose

For Dr. Anita Pundir, education was never limited to completing a course or earning a qualification. It was a continuous process of understanding, exploring, and preparing herself for greater responsibilities. After building her academic foundation in science, she continued to seek opportunities that expanded her knowledge and introduced her to different areas of learning. This phase of her journey reflects her curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to explore new directions while remaining committed to personal growth.

After completing her schooling, Dr. Anita pursued her graduation from Tika Ram Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Aligarh, affiliated with Agra University. During her Bachelor of Science studies, she studied subjects including Chemistry, Zoology, and Botany. This period strengthened her scientific understanding and allowed her to explore different branches of science. The knowledge she gained during these years became an important foundation for the specialised fields she would later enter.

Her graduation years also brought her one of the most memorable moments connected with her academic journey. When her graduation marksheet arrived, the postman who delivered it noticed her performance and expressed surprise at seeing such high marks. He shared his appreciation with her parents, telling them that he had rarely seen such marks. This moment brought immense pride to her father, who shared his daughter’s achievement with his senior officers at his workplace. For Late Ram Pratap Singh Pundhir, this was not only a moment of academic success but also a reflection of the faith he had placed in his daughter’s education.

After completing her graduation, Dr. Anita continued exploring opportunities to develop her skills. She pursued a two-year optometry course, which was related to eye assistance. This phase introduced her to the medical field and gave her practical exposure beyond academic learning. She worked under an eye surgeon, where she gained experience by observing and assisting in a professional medical environment.

Her association with the medical field continued as she practised with an eye surgeon in Kanpur. This experience helped her understand the importance of precision, responsibility, and practical application of knowledge. Working closely with medical professionals gave her exposure to a field where scientific understanding directly connected with human well-being.

While gaining professional experience, Dr. Anita continued her academic journey. She started her postgraduate studies at Kanpur University and pursued M.Sc. Chemistry. Managing higher education alongside practical responsibilities required discipline and commitment. During this period, she maintained a balance between her studies and clinical work, attending classes during the day and continuing her practical involvement in the evening.
