Growing up in a conservative Tamilian community, Dr. Gaayathri Iyeer’s world was bordered by the unspoken boundaries set by care and custom. Routine was both safety and constraint. Exploration beyond the home was rare, and independent adventure was out of the question. Evenings had clear limits, with the expectation that the girls be back, never later than eight in the evening. They traveled together, always as a family unit, never venturing out solo or pushing past those boundaries.
