Introduction

Growing up in a family that valued hard work, Fitzroy learned early the importance of integrity, discipline, and perseverance.

As a young boy, Fitzroy had no grand expectations for the future. His childhood was simple, marked by quiet moments and a sense of togetherness. These formative years, though quiet, were instrumental in laying the foundation for his future achievements. His uncles and grandfather were pivotal figures in his life, providing the nurturing guidance that would shape his work ethic and character.

Despite the challenges of growing up in a modest family, Fitzroy’s early aspirations were big. Initially drawn to chemical engineering, the industrial environment of his hometown fuelled his interest in the petrochemical industry. This fascination led him to believe that his future lay in that field. However, destiny had other plans. During his school years, he discovered his true calling not in chemical engineering but in Information Technology (IT). Fitzroy’s natural curiosity and adaptability led him to explore this rapidly evolving field, which would soon define his career.

In the early 1980s, Fitzroy made a life-changing decision to pursue his education in London, at West London College, where he delved into the world of computer programming and mainframe operations. Leaving his home for the first time, he faced the challenges of living in a foreign cold weather and culture. The cold winters of London were a shock to him, but his adaptable nature allowed him to thrive in this new environment. At college, he was surrounded by students from all over the world, which enriched his experience and taught him the value of diversity. The friendships he formed with classmates from countries such as India and Iraq played a significant role in shaping his global perspective.

While studying in London, Fitzroy was not only gaining technical skills but also learning life lessons that would shape his future. The ad, calling for applicants to study electronic data processing (EDP), was the spark that ignited his transition from chemical engineering to IT. It wasn’t so much a conscious decision as it was a serendipitous moment of clarity. Fitzroy didn’t know much about computers or data processing at the time, but the field seemed like an exciting new frontier, one that offered both intellectual challenges and career opportunities in a rapidly evolving world. In hindsight, Fitzroy often reflects on this moment as the day IT chose him, rather than the other way around.

This moment of discovery led Fitzroy to pursue his studies at West London College, where he enrolled in courses that focused on programming and computer operations. His time in London had given him the tools, knowledge, and vision to pursue a path that was still relatively new but full of promise and potential. His first step into the professional world was with British West Indian Airways (BWIA), the national airline of Trinidad and Tobago. For Fitzroy, this was an exciting yet daunting opportunity, as it marked his first full-time role in the field of IT. While he had the technical expertise, the world of aviation IT posed unique challenges that Fitzroy had not encountered before. The world of airlines, with its complex scheduling systems, international communication needs, and mission-critical operations, was fast-paced and required the utmost precision. However, Fitzroy’s adaptability, honed during his time in London, proved to be an asset as he quickly acclimated to the demands of the airline industry.

At BWIA, Fitzroy began to apply his knowledge of IT systems to support the airline’s operations. His work involved troubleshooting existing systems, maintaining critical infrastructure, and ensuring that the airline’s communication networks were reliable and secure. It was a role that involved both problem-solving and innovation, as Fitzroy worked tirelessly to ensure that the airline’s IT systems were not only efficient but also resilient enough to withstand the complexities of the aviation industry.
