“Many are called, but few are chosen.”

Introduction

In every era, there are individuals whose lives seem carved by divine intention—those who do not simply pass through time but leave behind a trail of light, transforming every soul they encounter. Dr. Donald R. Crutchfield, Sr. is one such individual.

His life cannot be measured in years alone, nor in titles or accolades. Instead, it is best understood through the lives he’s touched, the burdens he’s lifted, and the unwavering faith that has guided his every step. His is a story of obedience, of resilience, and above all, of purpose.

Born on September 17, 1967, in the rich, red-clay hills of North Carolina, Dr. Crutchfield’s journey began as the fifth of six children—raised in a home that valued prayer, discipline, and love. What began in simplicity soon blossomed into a life filled with extraordinary calling. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age, and in that divine moment, a seed was planted that would one day grow into a powerful, global ministry.

But calling does not always lead down paved roads. Like many who are truly chosen, Dr. Crutchfield’s path included trials, refinement, and a deep dependence on God’s voice. He wasn’t catapulted into the spotlight; he was shaped in the shadows, forged in faith, and empowered by the Spirit. His first sermon, preached in 2002 on a live radio broadcast, was more than an introduction—it was a declaration that God had equipped him to proclaim liberty to the captives and healing to the brokenhearted.

Over the years, he would wear many mantles: Associate Minister, Youth Pastor, Director of Christian Education, Senior Pastor, Executive Pastor. Each role was not just a position—it was a platform to serve, uplift, and restore. In every church he touched—from Greater Light Missionary Baptist Church to First Jericho Baptist, from Second Chance Community Baptist Church to First Baptist Church of Fairmount Heights—he brought vision, structure, and soul.

But Dr. Crutchfield’s ministry was never confined by four walls. His heart beat for the community—for families who needed groceries, for children who needed backpacks, for seniors in care homes longing for prayer and presence. He led food pantries, holiday drives, discipleship programs, and recovery ministries, turning neighborhoods into mission fields and strangers into family.

He is often called the “Walking Bible”—not because he can quote Scripture flawlessly (though he can), but because he lives it. His very life has become a walking testimony of what happens when God’s Word is not only believed but embodied. Through his work with Global Faith Alliance, he has extended his arms across oceans, preaching revivals and conducting mission work in the West Indies, showing that the Gospel knows no border and compassion knows no language barrier.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Phase 1: Roots in the Red Clay

In the stillness of rural North Carolina, where the red clay clung to boots and memories alike, a child was born who would one day become a steadfast voice in a troubled world. On September 17, 1967, Dr. Donald R. Crutchfield, Sr. came into this world as the fifth of six children—a middle child by placement but destined to rise as a pillar within his family and far beyond. He was born into the arms of William O. Crutchfield, Sr., a man of silent strength, and Eula D. Crutchfield-Brooks, a mother whose spirit echoed Proverbs 31—a woman clothed with dignity and wisdom.

The Crutchfield household was not bathed in riches or worldly grandeur, but in the richness of values. It was a place where love was not simply spoken but shown—in the breaking of bread, in the shared prayers before bedtime, and in the way each child was taught to stand tall yet remain humble. The red clay that surrounded their North Carolina home wasn’t just earth—it was his foundation, symbolic of the spiritual soil in which Dr. Crutchfield’s young soul was planted. It would be years before he would realize how deeply those early seeds of faith would anchor his life.

Growing up in a household of six siblings meant learning early the delicate art of listening, leading, and loving. Dr. Crutchfield watched as his older siblings paved the way with grit and grace, while he learned to become both student and teacher to his younger ones. There was competition, yes—but more so, there was companionship. Every chore done, every Scripture memorized, and every correction offered by their parents carried the silent yet clear message: We are preparing you for something greater than yourself.

Though his life would later unfold across pulpits and platforms, Dr. Crutchfield’s first stage was the family living room—where evening devotionals turned into spirited discussions about faith, responsibility, and destiny. His mother often recited Scripture with the kind of conviction that left impressions on his soul, not just his mind. She believed deeply in the biblical principle of training up a child, and she lived it.

“Your talent is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.”

Phase 2: The Voice Within

Dr. Donald R. Crutchfield, Sr.

There are moments in life that arrive not with fanfare but with a still, undeniable clarity—moments when destiny whispers, and the soul must answer. For Dr. Crutchfield, that moment came in March 2002, not as a sudden thunderclap but as a deep and roaring confirmation of what had long been stirring inside him. The voice of God, which had once been a gentle nudge in childhood prayers and youthful ponderings, had become a divine summons that could no longer be ignored.

He had spent years navigating the joys and challenges of adulthood—working, raising a family, participating in the community. But amid the cadence of life’s routine, he began to feel an internal stirring—a sense that God had marked him for more. While others might have seen a well-meaning man with good values and a kind heart, God saw a messenger waiting to be awakened.

In December 2002, the awakening became undeniable. It was during a live radio broadcast for Prayer of Faith Ministries, an outreach platform known for carrying messages of hope and healing across the airwaves. He stepped up to the microphone. His hands may have trembled, his voice might have cracked for a moment—but his heart was firm, and his spirit was ready.

That first sermon wasn’t simply an act of speech—it was a moment of divine release. As his words flowed, so did a powerful anointing that left those listening with no doubt: this was not an ordinary man reading Scripture—this was a man called by God to preach it.

His sermon wasn’t rehearsed for performance, nor styled for applause. It came from a deep well of lived faith, personal transformation, and unshakable truth. The Holy Spirit moved through his cadence. The Gospel came alive, not as mere doctrine but as living water.

“God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.”

Phase 3: The Making of a Minister

Dr. Donald R. Crutchfield, Sr.

When Dr. Donald R. Crutchfield, Sr. answered the call to ministry in 2002, he did so not with grandeur, but with deep humility and reverence. The years that followed would prove to be some of the most transformative and defining of his spiritual walk. He stepped into this new chapter with an open heart, a willing spirit, and a fierce commitment to be used wholly by God.

From 2002 to 2005, he faithfully served at Greater Light Missionary Baptist Church under the mentorship of Pastor James Hardy. Here, he experienced what many would later describe as his “seminary in service.” Pastor Hardy, seasoned in wisdom and patience, gave him space not just to preach but to observe, absorb, and participate in the daily rhythms of church leadership. Dr. Crutchfield cleaned floors, visited the sick, counseled the broken, studied Scripture deeply, and stood beside his pastor during altar calls, baptisms, and funerals. He learned ministry from the inside out—not just the glory on the pulpit but the grind behind the scenes.

It was a season of deep discipleship. His responsibilities were not titles; they were training grounds. He was being molded—not just as a preacher of words but as a servant of soul, while being mentored by another local pastor, the late Bishop Roscoe Harris.

By 2006, God was preparing to expand his territory. He was led to First Jericho Baptist Church, where he served under the visionary leadership of Dr. Vernon A. Jones. It was here that he stepped fully into the dual mantle of Director of Christian Education and Youth Minister. These roles were not mere assignments—they were callings within the calling, tailor-made for his gifts.

With passionate dedication, he revitalized and reimagined Christian education within the church. He founded and implemented transformative programs that left a lasting mark.
