“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”

Introduction

Dr. Diraj Dev Gooneadry serves as a powerful example of how important it is to keep going, have a vision, and be dedicated to serving others. He was born in a small village in Mauritius place called Souillac and came from very humble beginnings. Now, he has a lot of influence in many areas, including public service, international sports, coaching, and empowering young people. His story is not just about his own successes; it’s also about making it easier for other people to succeed. It shows that determination, discipline, and a strong sense of purpose can help you get through even the toughest situations.

Dr. Diraj was used to working hard and being resourceful from a young age. He grew up in a village that didn’t have the same kinds of buildings and services as bigger towns, so he learned quickly how to make the most of what he had. The gyms and sports facilities were very basic when he was growing up. Players often practiced on wooden slabs or concrete floors with bad lighting and not much equipment. But for Dr. Diraj, these limits were never problems; they were chances to grow stronger and more creative. The problems with the infrastructure didn’t make him lose interest in sports; instead, they made him even more determined to do well, no matter what.

Even though he didn’t have a lot of resources, he did have something just as important: a group of people who valued hard work, dedication, and helping each other. This early experience had an effect on how Dr. Diraj approached work and sports. He learned that you don’t get excellence by chance; you have to work hard and stick with it. These values were the basis of his philosophy and helped him through a long career in both badminton and public service.

Dr. Diraj ‘s professional journey is a wonderful story of hard work, flexibility, and growth. He started in the hospitality industry and worked in several jobs that helped him improve his attention to detail, people skills, and sense of responsibility. He worked as a Trainee Waiter at the Royal Palm Hotel from July 1987 to December 1987. He quickly learned how to meet the needs of customers and keep the business running smoothly. This early experience prepared him for later jobs, such as Barman-Cashier at Air Mauritius Ltd. and Caviste at Le Meridien Hotel, which required accuracy, dependability, and hard work. These early years were very important in developing the professional discipline that would become his trademark.

In 1990, Dr. Diraj added to his professional experience by becoming a Postal Agent for the Post and Telegraph Department. In this role, he was responsible for logistics and dealing with the public, which required him to be honest and dependable. That same year, he became the Police Department’s Catering Supervisor, a job he kept until 1993. Each of these jobs helped him get better at handling responsibilities, leading teams, and working with complicated organizational structures. Later, he moved to the Ministry of Education as a Word Processing Operator, where he improved his administrative skills and showed that he could work in a variety of fields.

He reached the height of his professional career when he worked in the Judiciary as Court Usher, Senior Court Usher and then as Principal Court Usher until 2025. In this role, Dr. Diraj paid close attention to the rules while also being deeply committed to fairness, professionalism, and service. His coworkers and bosses always praised his honesty, dependability, and unwavering commitment. He was able to do many different things and make a real difference in many different situations, even when he was on leave. For example, he was the Assistant Company Secretary and Senior Trust Administrator. His short time as Secretary at the Ombudsperson for Children’s Office showed even more how dedicated he was to serving the public with care, expertise, and hard work.

“Sweet childish days, that were as long, as twenty days are now.”

Phase 1: Early Childhood and Humble Beginnings

On March 12, 1969, Dr. Diraj was born in the beautiful village of Souillac, Mauritius. His birth date was significant because it was exactly one year after Mauritius became independent in 1968. Dr. Diraj ‘s life began at the same time as the country’s journey toward self-determination, which would shape both his character and his accomplishments. From the start, Dr. Diraj ‘s life was shaped by a mix of cultural richness, family love, and the quiet strength that would help him navigate through his early years.

The French had a strong influence on the customs, buildings, and educational values of Souillac, his birthplace. Souillac was paired with a village in France near Rocamadour, in the Lot area, to promote cross-cultural exchange programs. Souillac kids, like Dr. Diraj, got to go to France and meet French kids. This opened their minds and made them more curious and ambitious. He grew up in an environment that taught him to value culture, connection, and learning from different points of view.

Dr. Diraj ‘s family was not rich, but they were very loving. His father worked as the chief plumber for the Central Water Authority of Mauritius and spent his whole life serving the public. His mother also took care of the family while tending to the gardens. Dr. Diraj was the youngest of four kids. He had two older sisters and one older brother. As the youngest, he often watched and learned from his older siblings. From a young age, he learned the importance of being strong, responsible, and never giving up.

Dr. Diraj had a natural aptitude for school, yet he never underestimated its importance. He took part in the new Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) exam system in Mauritius in 1980. There were 39,000 people who took this test, but only 2,000 were able to get into government secondary school. Dr. Diraj came in 465th out of a huge group of people, which was a wonderful accomplishment that showed how hard he worked, how smart he was, and how determined he was. CPE gave high honors to the best students at that time, and Dr. Diraj ‘s outstanding scores in English, French, Geography, Mathematics, and Hindi earned him praise for his work in all of these subjects. His grandparents immigrated to Mauritius from India, bringing with them traditions, language, and cultural pride. This is why he was so proficient at Hindi.

Even though he did very well, Dr. Diraj chose a path that was more practical. He could have gone to the prestigious Royal College of Curepipe, but problems with transportation and family issues made him choose the Swami Vivekananda State Secondary School in Souillac instead. He did very well in school here, with the help of his teachers and classmates. This incident showed that hard work and focus could help him get over problems with space and society.

Dr. Diraj found his love for sports, especially badminton, in addition to his studies. Badminton was just starting to get popular in Mauritius in the early 1980s, and there weren’t many places to play. But Dr. Diraj took on the challenge. He trained five days a week and became the National Junior Champion in just two years. He was just as dedicated to the sport as he was to his studies, constantly trying to get better, being tough, and striving for excellence.

“Greatness is not measured by what a man or woman accomplishes, but by the opposition he or she has overcome to reach their goals.”

Phase 2 : Educational Excellence and Achievements

Dr. Diraj ‘s path through school shows how dedicated he is to learning, doing his best at work, and growing as a person. Dr. Diraj ‘s path, from primary school to international professional qualifications, shows a constant drive for excellence in many fields, including law, management, hospitality, sports, and public service.

Dr. Diraj ‘s early schooling showed how smart and adaptable he was. He did very well on the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) exam in 1980, placing among the best candidates in Mauritius out of 39,000 students. He did very well in English, French, Maths, Biology, Accounts, and Chemistry, which set him up for future success in school and in his career.

Dr. Diraj went to the Swami Vivekananda State Secondary School in Souillac for high school. He did well in school and also pursued extracurricular activities like badminton, where he became a National Junior Champion. He excelled in several subjects during his School Certificate, and went on to pass the GCE A-Level exams in Law (London), French, and Accounting (Cambridge). These early successes not only showed off their intelligence, but they also demonstrated that they could handle both schoolwork and sports and leadership duties.

Dr. Diraj built on these early foundations by getting various professional and technical qualifications that show both depth and breadth of knowledge. Here are some of the things he has done well in the hospitality and catering business:

In April 1990, Dr. Diraj began working for the government as a Postal Agent with the Post and Telegraph Department. It took a change in how I thought and acted to go from hospitality to public service. Dr. Diraj learned about public administration, being responsible, and helping his community here. He ran the postal service well, making sure that businesses and people got their mail on time and correctly. His ability to adjust to a structured government setting showed how flexible he was and how dedicated he was to helping others, no matter what the field.

Dr. Diraj became a Catering Supervisor for the Police Department in July 1990 and stayed in that job until June 1993. This job involved both overseeing operations and coordinating logistics.
