“Childhoods never last. But everyone deserves one”

Phase 1: FOUNDATIONS IN MUMBAI : THE EARLY YEARS

Before titles, designations, and the weight of responsibility, there was just a young girl in Guyana who carried within her a quiet fire—a desire to be someone who makes a difference. Dr. Alicia Van Brook Lord’s roots lie in simplicity, discipline, and the unshakable values of education and integrity instilled in her from childhood. Born into a home where diligence and manners mattered more than material things, Alicia’s upbringing set the foundation for her life’s work.

She began her academic journey at St. Andrew’s Primary School between 1995 and 2000, where her presence was calm but unmistakable. While others may have sought to stand out through loudness, young Alicia stood out through her dependability, neatness, and an unusual maturity for her age. She understood early that attention is earned not by shouting, but by showing up and doing things right, every time.

Her transition to Central High School (2000–2005) marked a formative period of identity and purpose. Here, she encountered the pressures many teenagers face—the desire to fit in, the fear of failure, the uncertainty about the future. But Alicia didn’t allow those uncertainties to derail her. Instead, she leaned into discipline, focusing not just on passing exams but on understanding how her education could be the bridge to something greater. Her performance in the Caribbean Examinations Council (C.X.C.) reflected not only her intelligence but her perseverance—a pattern that would repeat across the years.

From a young age, Alicia wasn’t chasing a specific job title. Instead, she was pursuing something more personal: the satisfaction of completing every task with excellence. Whether it was completing an assignment, helping classmates, or organizing her school materials with precision, her approach to life was deeply rooted in structure and inner accountability. She didn’t need to be told what to do—she already knew, and she was already doing it.

It was during these early years that her natural inclination toward systems and processes began to emerge. She showed a distinct comfort with routine, an almost instinctive ability to handle multiple responsibilities without panic, and a passion for understanding how things work beneath the surface. It wasn’t just about getting things done—it was about understanding why and how.

“Real transformation requires real honesty. If you want to move forward, get real with yourself.”

Phase 2 : TRANSITION TO THE UNITED STATES & THE FORMATION OF A GLOBAL MINDSET

The shift from one’s home country to an entirely different continent stands as one of the most significant experiences in an individual’s life. For Dr. Dhruvin Patwa, this transition signified far more than a mere change in location. This moment signified the transition of ambition into tangible action, the expansion of possibility into reality, and the alignment of his career trajectory with the global stage. Phase Two of his journey outlines this significant transition from Mumbai to Boston, highlighting the academic rigour, cultural insights, and self-discipline that developed him into a leader adept at navigating international environments with clarity and precision.

Upon finishing his initial year in the Bachelor of Commerce program in Mumbai, Dr. Patwa found himself at a significant juncture. As he advanced consistently in the field of commerce, he became aware of the swift transformations occurring in the global market. Data-driven decision-making, analytics, technology-enabled systems, and international business operations are increasingly becoming pivotal elements influencing future career trajectories. The chance to transfer his academic credits to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at Hult International Business School presented itself at an opportune time. It enabled him to transition into a more widely acknowledged academic trajectory while also allowing him to engage in an international setting that matched his ambitions.

By accepting the offer from Hult, he was not just making a choice regarding higher education; he was opting to realign his life with global standards of excellence. Relocating to the United States necessitated a significant level of courage—not only in terms of financial and logistical considerations but also mentally. It required a readiness to adapt, a willingness to compete with colleagues from various countries, and the discipline to excel in an environment where expectations were markedly elevated compared to conventional academic systems.

Upon arriving in Boston, the first thing he encountered was a striking contrast—cultural, academic, and occupational. The educational atmosphere at Hult significantly contrasts with the traditional lecture-oriented, exam-centric methods prevalent in Indian institutions. The focus was on business simulations, case studies, collaborative projects, real-time presentations, and research driven by industry needs. This transition necessitated that students demonstrate proactivity, articulate their thoughts clearly, engage in analytical thinking, and participate actively. For Dr. Patwa, these demands represented not obstacles but rather opportunities. They seamlessly corresponded with the discipline he cultivated in Mumbai and the analytical curiosity that influenced his academic decisions.

His coursework at Hult showcased a combination of essential business principles and technology-focused areas of study. The study of Statistics and Data Analysis, Managerial Accounting, Principles of Entrepreneurship, Global Business Law, Emerging Technologies, Principles of Management, and Financial Literacy has significantly enhanced his comprehension of organisational operations, competition, and innovation. These courses established the foundation of his managerial approach—a style of thinking that integrates structured logic with insights derived from data.

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

Phase 3 : ENTRY INTO CORPORATE TECHNOLOGY & THE RISE OF AN AGILE PROFESSIONAL

Phase 3 signifies the transition from academic preparation to practical implementation. During this time, Dr. Dhruvin Patwa entered the corporate world and started to navigate the complexities, expectations, and responsibilities of global enterprise environments. This phase underscores his transition into technology leadership, his engagement with Agile frameworks, and the foundational professional choices that set him on the path to becoming a distinguished AI Program Manager at one of the world’s leading financial institutions.

Upon earning his Bachelor of Business Administration from Hult International Business School and commencing his Master’s program in Computer Applications, Dr. Patwa was poised to make a notable impact in the professional arena. That opportunity presented itself when he joined Morgan Stanley, marking the beginning of a career that would rapidly develop into a complex journey encompassing technology delivery, program management, and cross-functional enterprise operations.

His initial role at Morgan Stanley was that of a Scrum Master—a position that requires clarity, coordination, and the discipline to maintain the principles of Agile methodology in a dynamic environment. Numerous individuals find it challenging to move from academic environments to the structured demands of corporate settings; however, for Dr. Patwa, the adjustment was seamless. His analytical background, combined with his academic foundation in emerging technologies and management sciences, equipped him effectively to assume responsibilities that demanded both precision and leadership.

The agile environment at Morgan Stanley was not just a matter of procedure; it involved high stakes, cross-functional collaboration and was intricately linked to the firm’s operational efficiency. In his role as a Scrum Master, he facilitated daily standups, backlog refinement sessions, sprint reviews, retrospective meetings, and cross-team communications. His responsibilities involved ensuring alignment among development teams, early identification of obstacles, and consistent achievement of sprint goals. Maintaining this rhythm requires discipline, structure, and adaptability, all of which characterise his approach.

However, his duties encompassed much more than standard ceremonies. The atmosphere at Morgan Stanley was dynamic, necessitating effective collaboration among engineering teams, product owners, senior stakeholders, and business users. The stakes were significant, considering the magnitude of the operations involved. In this context, each sprint carried implications that could potentially influence business processes, financial operations, or internal system workflows. Dr. Patwa exhibited a strong technical understanding, coupled with composure, clear communication, and a confident approach to navigating ambiguity.
