The journey of Dr. Craig William Lovett is one that exemplifies resilience, perseverance, and the unwavering drive to make an impact. His path to success was not paved with ease or privilege but instead carved through personal hardships, life-changing decisions, and a deep dedication to being the best in everything he does. From his early life in a modest home to becoming a recognized global leader in the event management industry, Craig’s story is a powerful testament to the positive effects of determination and vision.
Adversity marked Craig’s early years when he was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1960. At the tender age of six, he tragically lost his father in a car accident. This devastating event shaped his early life, leaving his mother to raise him and his younger brother, Paul, on her own. Despite the immense challenges they faced, Craig’s mother was a source of unwavering strength. A telephonist by profession, she managed to keep the family together through sheer determination and love. Everything that followed would be built on the resilience, strength, and perseverance lessons Craig learned from his mother and grandmother.
He frequently considers how his family gave him a lot of love and emotional support in spite of their lack of wealth. His grandmother, who moved in with the family after his father’s death, played a significant role in his upbringing. Despite financial difficulties, she and his mother built a loving home where family, community, love, and laughter were central. This setting formed Craig’s values, which would help him navigate the most challenging times in life.
While his childhood was rooted in love and resilience, Craig’s schooling years were not without their struggles. Attending Fairfield Boys High School in Sydney’s West, he was thrust into an environment marked by racial segregation and social challenges. However, rather than succumbing to these adversities, Craig embraced them, learning how to survive, stand his ground, and build the resilience that would serve him in later life. His involvement in rugby union during these years taught him the importance of teamwork, discipline, the creation of a sense of belonging, and commitment, lessons that would resonate deeply throughout his career.
Following high school, Craig made a decision that would shape the course of his future: he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force. The military experience was transformative, offering him the discipline and leadership skills that would later define his business journey. For six years, he served within Australia and overseas in Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, learning the value of teamwork, strategic thinking, and the importance of leading by example. This period in the Air Force not only helped him develop essential life skills but also reinforced the importance of community and supporting those around you, a mindset he would carry forward in every venture.
The roots of Dr. Craig William Lovett’s remarkable journey were planted in the small yet resilient home in Sydney, Australia, where his story began. Born in 1960, Craig’s early years were anything but easy. His father tragically passed away in a car accident when he was just six years old. This devastating loss left his mother to raise him and his younger brother, Paul, in a modest household. Despite facing such adversity, Craig’s mother remained an unwavering source of strength. A telephonist by profession, she tirelessly worked to provide for her children, instilling in them a sense of resilience that would serve as the foundation for Craig’s future success.
Craig’s mother was not just the provider but also the heart of their home. After the tragic loss of her husband, she became the anchor of the family, ensuring that her children felt love and stability despite the absence of their father. Craig often speaks about how his mother, despite having little in material wealth, provided an abundance of emotional richness. This emotional support, combined with the strong sense of community that surrounded them, laid the groundwork for his resilience and leadership in later years.
Living with his grandmother, who moved in after his father’s death, further strengthened his foundation. His grandmother’s wisdom and nurturing presence became instrumental in shaping Craig’s character. In their small home, the atmosphere was always filled with laughter, despite their financial struggles. Craig remembers his grandmother as a key figure in both their home and extended family. Grandmother’s influence cannot be understated, as she embodied a sense of strength and compassion that Craig admired and carried with him throughout his life. Family gatherings at their home were always filled with warmth, and these moments of togetherness became a source of comfort and strength for him, particularly during the most challenging moments of his youth.
The lessons learned during this time were not always simple to grasp, but they became etched in his heart. His mother and grandmother both instilled in him values of hard work, resilience, and a deep sense of community. They often told him that no matter how difficult life became, it was important to never give up and always keep moving forward. These early experiences of loss and the strength to endure would later manifest in Craig’s ability to overcome the struggles and setbacks he would face in his career. He now reflects on his upbringing as the foundation of his character, stating, “It was the hardship that shaped me, not the success. It’s what you learn when life knocks you down that matters most. That’s where the real strength lies.”
After Dr. Craig’s challenging upbringing, where adversity had already laid the foundation for his character, the next phase of his journey would be marked by a decision that would shape the rest of his life. At the age of 18, driven by a deep desire to do something greater than himself, he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). This pivotal step in his life, a transition from the trials of youth to a structured, disciplined life, marked the beginning of a new chapter of growth and self-discovery.
Enlisting in the Air Force at a young age was more than just a career move for him; it was a way to channel his natural drive for discipline, teamwork, and personal growth into something meaningful. With the military’s rigorous demands, it offered him not only a way to find stability but also an environment that would push him further than he had ever been. For the next six years, he served in various locations, including Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, developing leadership skills and learning life lessons that would prove to be invaluable.
Throughout these years, Craig encountered the renowned discipline and structure of the military. This environment honed his sense of responsibility and showed him the importance of attention to detail. It wasn’t just about following orders; it was about understanding the bigger picture and contributing meaningfully to the success of the team. The Air Force shaped his approach to leadership, teaching him the importance of service over self-interest and how to maintain focus even during the toughest times.
The RAAF helped him build the foundation of his leadership philosophy. It was there that he learned how to inspire others by leading from the front, not from the back. Leadership in the Air Force, he came to realize, wasn’t about being the loudest voice in the room or seeking personal glory. It was about serving your team, playing your part, and showing them that you had their backs, no matter what. Craig’s journey in the military wasn’t about the fame or accolades; rather, it was about building a sense of camaraderie, working toward a common goal, and learning how to hold oneself accountable for the greater good.
After years of building discipline, leadership, and resilience during his time in the Royal Australian Air Force, Dr. Craig William Lovett was ready to face the next challenge in his life: the world of business. Though he had developed valuable skills and gained an appreciation for teamwork, he found himself at a crossroads. His military career had ended, and while the structure of the Air Force had equipped him with the tools for success, he knew that he needed to chart a new path. It was time to take the lessons learned from his military background and apply them to something bigger. He was inspired to make a difference in business, like he did in the Air Force, as the idea of entrepreneurship took hold.
With a deep desire to create something lasting, Craig set out on his own, stepping into the unknown. He didn’t have an extensive background in business or a wealthy network to fall back on. But he did have the same core values that had sustained him throughout his life: resilience, integrity, and a profound belief in the power of relationships. He knew that if he combined these values with his leadership and discipline, he could achieve anything.
In the early stages of his entrepreneurial journey, he had little more than an idea and a strong will to succeed. He began by selling sweeping and scrubbing machines for a US-based company, not necessarily the most glamorous start but one that provided him with a learning opportunity. The task of selling these machines wasn’t easy; he faced numerous challenges, and it became clear that the business world would be no less difficult than the military. But Craig was not the type to back down from a challenge. Instead, he applied the same determination and work ethic that had served him well in the Air Force.
The breakthrough came when he found himself trying to sell the sweeping machines to contractors at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. Despite his best efforts, the contractors weren’t interested. He could have easily given up, but instead, he took a different approach. In a bold move, he decided to buy the machines himself and approach the Racecourse with a different proposition: he would become the contractor himself. This was a pivotal moment in his journey. Not only did he secure a contract that would last for nearly 30 years, but he also laid the foundation for what would become Cleanevent, the company that would revolutionise event cleaning.
As Dr. Craig William Lovett reflects on his remarkable journey, he acknowledges that none of the company’s success would have been possible without the unwavering support of the incredible individuals who walked alongside him. Cleanevent was never a solo endeavor; it was the product of the collective efforts, dedication, and belief of every team member, client, partner, and mentor who contributed to its growth. For Craig, the true measure of success has always been the relationships that were built along the way.
First and foremost, Craig extends his deepest gratitude to his family. Their unwavering support and encouragement were the foundation upon which everything was built. Erin and Nicholas, his children, have been the heart of his personal life, grounding him through the challenges of his career and reminding him of the values that mattered most. His wife, Nicole, has been a source of constant strength and inspiration, with her compassion and partnership providing balance as he navigated the complexities of leadership over the past 12 years.
Brother Paul has been the textbook right arm for Craig, taking on every challenge that was handed to him. On 30 years of constant support, Craig says that he and Paul have found a way to work together by acknowledging each other’s strengths and weaknesses and “mostly stayed in their lanes.’’
His overwhelming pride in the capabilities of his son Nicholas, the GM of operations now in Incognitus , is obvious. Nicholas is his own man and does things his way and always has the same qualities as his father: “up front and present” at all times. Family first, people equal, respect always
Craig also expresses his heartfelt thanks to the countless mentors who have shaped his journey. Their guidance, wisdom, and belief in his potential gave him the confidence to push boundaries and persevere through challenges. Craig’s team, initially at Cleanevent and in more recent times Incognitus, deserves special recognition. From the very beginning, their hard work, dedication, and passion for excellence have been the driving force behind the company’s success. Business results and achievements are a direct result of the incredible talent and commitment of each individual who played a role in its growth.
Special mention to a few of the thousands of people that have crossed paths along his journey.
Ross Bradfield (deceased), who gave Craig that first “big break” at VRC Flemington Racecourse. Old school, steadfast and strong
Ron Kirwan (deceased), who took a chance and started a business with Craig in partnership in 1987. Ron supplied the finance, Craig the passion and drive with ideas, together they forged an opportunity.
Frank Roach, who taught Craig about the opportunity to share his passion and educate youth via internships. A visionary and wealth of event experience
Paul Lovett who took that first step to support the vision right from day one
Nicholas Lovett for seeing the need to step into the family business and take a firm hold of the operational reins and for the unconditional love provided every day. Loving, caring and strong
Erin Charles for oodles of love and care and the lessons in “stress less”
Nicole Lovett for the love and care for the past 13 years, and for bringing health forward as a target for life. Without good health we are nowhere; everything else we can fix
Lastly, Craig acknowledges the clients and partners who trusted him with their events. Their collaboration has been invaluable, and their shared commitment to excellence continues to inspire Craig and the entire team. Relationships are forever. Feed and nurture them.
This journey has been built on relationships, and it is these relationships that Craig cherishes most as his legacy.
Thanks,
– Dr. Craig William Lovett
