It provides readers with an uplifting story of a life devoted to innovation, mentoring, and service by documenting not just his accomplishments but also the ideals, principles, and vision that have steered him.
The subsequent stages of life are always constructed on the basis of childhood. One’s fate is frequently shaped in both obvious and invisible ways by the values, inspirations, and influences gathered throughout those formative years. This is also true of Dr. Amit Nag’s life narrative. His journey started on June 1st, 1955, when a kid was born who would eventually become a man steeped in his family’s history, infused with his mother’s loving care, his father’s discipline, and a legacy of both engineering and entrepreneurial drive.
Dr. Amit Nag was born into a household that delicately balanced tradition and modernity. His father Mr. Gopal Chandra Nag was a Mechanical Engineer who was meticulous, disciplined, and committed to his work. He had finished his study at NCE Bengal in 1951, which was renowned for its excellent engineering education and strict standards during pre-independence days. That became the University after some time. In his father’s day it was already turning out bright brains who would later work for the expanding industrial sector of the country.
His father travelled all throughout the nation for his work as a Central Govt. Gazetted officer of Directorate of Supplies and Disposal. He started his work with Indian Iron & Steel Co.at Burnpur, WB and then with National Test House. Each job bringing with it more responsibility and experience. In addition to giving him authority, that role was a reflection of his decades of technical mastery and hard labour. He is still regarded as a representation of strength, intelligence, and tenacity at the age of 97 in 2025 ( DOB :01.06.1928) . His life itself serves as evidence that one may age gracefully and maintain mental and physical strength with discipline, tenacity, and a moral approach to work.
Dr. Amit Nag’s professional journey, choices, and achievements in the country and industry have all been influenced by his solid academic background. Not only did he get degrees during his early years in academia, but he also developed a mindset, discipline, and way of thinking that enabled him to move fluidly between management, leadership, and technology. His education at Delhi University and Jadavpur University, two of India’s most prestigious universities, during this time in his life set the foundation for his diverse career.
One of India’s top technical universities, Jadavpur University, has long been a breeding ground for engineering talent that makes contributions both domestically and internationally. In addition to choosing to pursue a career in metallurgical engineering, Dr. Nag did so because he understood the importance of metals and minerals in the construction of infrastructure, economies, and industries. Metallurgy is not a typical engineering field; it calls for accuracy, rigorous analysis, and the capacity to convert basic scientific ideas into practical industrial uses.
Dr. Nag became fully engaged in the fields of materials science, thermodynamics, physical metallurgy, and industrial processes by pursuing this field. He became well-versed in the extraction, processing, and product development of metals, which support everything from defence to railroads. His choice of this course demonstrated both intellectual curiosity and insight, traits that would eventually define his success.
Dr. Nag had the opportunity to interact with some of the best academics and colleagues in the field at Jadavpur. The academic atmosphere was competitive and intellectually stimulating because of the university’s standing as a centre of excellence. In addition to theoretical understanding, the demanding training required problem-solving skills, laboratory precision, and experimental accuracy. His professional persona became centred around these abilities.
Dr. Amit Nag’s academic path, enhanced by the combination of technical expertise at Jadavpur University and management focus at Delhi University, inevitably brought him into contact with the vibrant Indian business sector. His grasp of how theory becomes practice, how industries operate in real time, and how leaders must overcome obstacles at the nexus of technology, business, and human effort were all greatly influenced by this phase—his early corporate career.
For Dr. Nag, the early years of his career were about building a second foundation rather than merely landing a job. These early corporate experiences provided him with the practical exposure, flexibility, and understanding necessary for leadership in later, larger stages, if academics had provided the blueprint.
For young professionals, transitioning from the regimented academic environment into the dynamic and demanding market is frequently a life-or death experience. This change was characterised by preparedness for Dr. Nag. Because of his background in business management and metallurgical science, he was able to approach industrial problems from a variety of perspectives when he joined the workforce.
His initial positions served as stepping stones, giving him the chance to learn about the various facets of industrial ecosystems, from machinery design and manufacturing processes to customer needs, project schedules, and teamwork. In contrast to strictly academic tasks, these roles required real-time solutions that balanced quality, cost, and efficiency.
Steel and Allied Products was the company that introduced Dr. Nag to the steel value chain during his first professional interaction. As the foundation of industrial growth, steel encompasses more than just metallurgy; it also involves economics, logistics, and strategic significance for industries ranging from defence to railroads and construction.
Dr. Amit Nag expresses his heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to the journey that has shaped both his personal and professional life. His achievements, spanning industrial innovation, entrepreneurship, mentorship, and service to the nation, have been possible because of the guidance, support, and encouragement of countless individuals, institutions, and colleagues.
He wishes to extend sincere thanks to his family, which include his Parents and whose unwavering support, patience, and understanding have been a cornerstone of his endeavors. His wife, who has been a partner in both life and enterprise, and his two daughters, specially the younger one and nephew , who have joined him in carrying forward the vision of Excelo Industries, have been a continuous source of inspiration and strength.
Dr. Nag is deeply grateful to his mentors, professors, and academic institutions, particularly Jadavpur University and Delhi University, for laying the foundation of knowledge, critical thinking, and discipline that guided his professional journey. The invaluable guidance he received during his formative years and the opportunities to engage with esteemed academicians have profoundly influenced his approach to learning, leadership, and mentorship.
He also acknowledges the support and collaboration of professional colleagues, industrial partners, and multinational organizations where he had the privilege to work. Their shared vision, professionalism, and dedication have played a significant role in his ability to acquire knowledge, implement innovative technologies, and expand industrial capabilities in India.
Dr. Nag expresses gratitude to the government authorities, Defense Organisations, Indian Railways, and trade associations for their trust and recognition of his contributions. Their acknowledgment, guidance, and collaboration have not only enhanced his professional pursuits but also strengthened India’s self-reliance and industrial growth.
He is particularly thankful to the students, scholars, and young professionals he has interacted with over the years. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn have been a source of joy and motivation, reinforcing his belief in the power of knowledge sharing and mentorship as a tool for societal development.
Thanks
