Every remarkable journey begins with a foundation built quietly through experiences, values, and choices. The life of Dr. Rituraj Bose reflects such a journey, where determination, knowledge, creativity, and service have remained connected throughout the years. His story is not only about professional achievements in engineering and welding technology but also about the principles, relationships, and beliefs that shaped the person behind those accomplishments.
Born into a family where values and creativity held great importance, Dr. Rituraj Bose was deeply influenced by the life and thoughts of his father, Late Arunachal Bose, a poet and a man of principle. Although he lost his father at a young age, the impact of his father’s ideology remained present throughout his life. His father’s writings and principles continued to influence his understanding of values and personal beliefs. His mother, Late Latika Bose, played an equally significant role during his childhood, taking responsibility for the family and ensuring that her children continued moving forward despite the financial challenges they faced.
His early years were shaped by simplicity, learning, and strong personal connections. His association with Jadavpur High School continued beyond his student years, as he remained actively connected with its alumni community called Praktanee and contributed to organising annual alumni gatherings. His continued association reflects the importance he places on maintaining connections with the institution that was part of his early journey.
When opportunities for engineering education were limited, he chose a practical route by completing a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, allowing him to enter the technical field he had always aspired towards. His desire for continuous growth later encouraged him to pursue an Executive Master’s Diploma in Business Management with specialisation in Operations Management, combining technical understanding with management knowledge.
A significant chapter of his career began with Tecnimont SpA, Italy, where he gained international exposure through quality management responsibilities across various engineering projects. Working in quality management roles, he handled responsibilities related to quality assurance, inspection, project coordination, and quality control activities. These experiences expanded his professional perspective and strengthened his expertise in quality management, technical practices, and international project environments.
Through his involvement with IIW-India, he worked towards promoting welding education, certification, skill development initiatives, student engagement, and greater participation of women in welding. His vision of “Welding for Nation Building” represents his belief that welding is not simply a technical skill but an important contribution to industrial development and national progress.

Phase 1: The Foundation of Values, Creativity, and Inner Strength
Before the world recognised Dr. Rituraj Bose for his contributions to engineering, quality management, and welding technology, there was a childhood shaped by values, simplicity, and experiences that remained deeply connected to his identity. His early years were not defined by material comforts but by the principles, creativity, and resilience that surrounded him. The foundation of his life was built within his family, where ideas, discipline, and responsibility held greater importance than possessions.
At the centre of these early influences was his father, Late Arunachal Bose, a poet and a cultural flag bearer whose life reflected strong beliefs and unwavering principles. He was a person who remained committed to his ideology and creative expression, even when circumstances were not always easy. His choices were guided by conviction rather than comfort, and this quality left a lasting impression on his family. Though he lost his father when he was around thirteen years old, the connection did not end with that loss. Over time, he began understanding his father’s thoughts, writings, and the values that shaped his life.
The absence of his father during such a young age meant that many memories were formed later through reflection and discovery. As he grew older, he explored the writings and works left behind by his father, gaining a deeper understanding of the person he was. The principles that once seemed distant became clearer with maturity. His father’s approach towards life became an example of staying committed to one’s beliefs, even when the path was challenging.
This connection with his father’s literary journey became even more meaningful in 2023, during his birth centenary year. Dr. Rituraj Bose took the responsibility of editing two books dedicated to preserving his father’s legacy. These works brought together his father’s earlier writings along with contributions from people who had written about him over the years. Through this effort, he not only honoured his father’s memory but also ensured that his thoughts and creative contributions continued to reach others.
While his father’s influence came through principles and literature, his mother, Late Latika Bose, became the pillar who carried the family forward during difficult times. After his father’s passing, she took responsibility for raising the family while managing the challenges that came with limited financial resources. Working as nursing staff, she supported her children through dedication and perseverance. Her efforts became an important part of his understanding of commitment and responsibility. A quiet moment with music, reflecting the creative sensibility that has accompanied Dr. Rituraj Bose beyond his professional life.
The circumstances of his childhood were challenging, but they also shaped his outlook towards life. His family did not always have access to everything that others experienced, and there were struggles that required patience and adjustment. However, these experiences developed a sense of gratitude and resilience within him. Rather than allowing limitations to define his future, he carried forward the lessons of determination and hard work.
Growing up alongside his elder sister, Kajari, he experienced the importance of family bonds during his formative years. Phase 2 : A Dream of Engineering and the Determination to Build a Future

For Dr. Rituraj Bose, the desire to become a mechanical engineer emerged at a time when opportunities were limited and the journey ahead was uncertain. Yet, what remained constant was his determination to move towards his goal. His educational journey reflects a mindset that would continue throughout his life : when one path becomes difficult, the answer is not to stop but to find another way forward.
After completing his schooling, he carried a strong aspiration to enter the field of mechanical engineering. During that period, engineering education opportunities were limited, with only a few institutions offering degree programmes in West Bengal. He attempted to pursue a degree in the field he had chosen, but circumstances did not allow that particular route to open for him. Instead of considering it as an end to his ambition, he looked for another opportunity to continue moving towards the same goal.
He chose to pursue a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, creating a strong technical foundation for his professional journey. This decision reflected his practical approach and willingness to adapt without losing sight of his dream. The path may have been different from what he had originally imagined, but the purpose remained unchanged. He wanted to understand engineering, work with technology, and build a career based on technical knowledge.
His education became the beginning of a lifelong relationship with learning. Even after entering the professional world, he continued expanding his knowledge and developing new skills. For Dr. Rituraj Bose, education was not limited to classrooms or certificates; it was a continuous process of improving oneself and staying prepared for new responsibilities.
As his professional journey progressed, he recognised the importance of combining technical expertise with management understanding. This led him to pursue a Diploma in Business and Industrial Management and also an Executive Master’s Diploma in Business Administration (EMBA) with specialisation in Operations Management. These additional qualifications helped him strengthen his understanding of organisational processes, planning, and management, complementing the technical foundation he had already built through mechanical engineering.
Alongside his academic qualifications, he continued developing expertise in areas connected with quality, safety, auditing, and welding technology. His learning journey included specialised professional qualifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP), International Welding Technologist (IWT), CII Certified Quality Professional (CCQP Level A), and certifications related to quality management, environmental management, occupational health and safety, and non-destructive testing.

Phase 3 : Entering the Professional World and Building the Foundations of Expertise
After completing his education in mechanical engineering, Dr. Rituraj Bose stepped into the professional world with the determination to transform his technical knowledge into practical experience. The transition from being a student to becoming a working professional introduced him to a new environment where learning extended beyond classrooms. It was a phase where every assignment, every challenge, and every responsibility became an opportunity to understand the realities of engineering and industry.
In 1985, he began his professional journey with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), ECC Construction Group, joining as a trainee. Entering one of the most respected engineering organisations provided him with the platform to understand large-scale projects, industrial practices, and the discipline required in professional environments. His early years at L&T became an important learning period where he gradually developed his technical understanding and gained exposure to the practical aspects of mechanical engineering.
The beginning was not without challenges. Moving into the professional world required him to apply the knowledge gained through education while continuously learning from experienced professionals around him. During his initial assignments, he worked in construction environments and learned essential aspects of engineering practices, including understanding drawings, project requirements, and the importance of precision in execution.
These early experiences helped shape his approach towards work. He understood that engineering was not limited to technical calculations or theoretical knowledge; it was also about responsibility, teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to solve problems effectively. The lessons learned during this period created the foundation for the quality-focused approach that would later become a defining part of his career.
During his time with L&T, he progressed from the role of trainee to Assistant Engineer (Mechanical). This growth reflected his dedication, willingness to learn, and ability to take on increasing responsibilities. The organisation provided him with valuable exposure to industrial operations and helped him understand the importance of maintaining standards in engineering work.
After spending several years at L&T, he continued exploring new professional opportunities that allowed him to expand his experience. In 1993, he joined Subhash Projects & Marketing Ltd., Kolkata, as an Inspection Engineer. This role further strengthened his understanding of inspection processes, quality requirements, and the importance of ensuring that engineering work met expected standards.
The experience gained through inspection responsibilities helped him develop a deeper appreciation for quality management. He began recognising that successful projects were not only dependent on completion but also on accuracy, reliability, and adherence to established procedures. This perspective would later become central to his professional identity.
