The life journey of Dr. Harnam Singh Heera reflects a lifelong commitment to learning, perseverance, and the search for truth. Born and brought up in a village of Punjab, he experienced a childhood shaped by simplicity, limited resources, and strong values. The difficult circumstances around him, including poor infrastructure, long distances, and limited means of transportation, became part of his early experiences and helped build the determination that remained with him throughout his life.
From his childhood, Dr. Harnam Singh was influenced by the spiritual environment created by his family. His father, S. Rattan Singh Heera, had a deep connection with spiritual teachings and had studied Sri Guru Granth Sahib for many years. The values and thoughts he received from his father gradually guided him towards the path of Kabir Sahib. What began as curiosity became a lifelong dedication to understanding, studying, and sharing Kabir Sahib’s teachings.
His educational journey was built through persistence and effort. After completing his early schooling in his village, he travelled several kilometres to continue his studies in nearby schools and later attended Government College, Ropar. Although circumstances forced him to leave college temporarily, he continued his education and completed his intermediate studies in 1959. His desire to learn never stopped, and alongside his responsibilities, he continued expanding his knowledge, particularly in Hindi and Kabir literature.
In 1961, Dr. Harnam Singh entered government service after being selected through the Punjab School Education Board. Beginning his career as a clerk in the Education Department, he gradually progressed through dedication and sincere work. During his years of service, he took on increasing responsibilities and eventually reached positions such as Budget Officer, Registrar, and Assistant Director. His professional journey reflected his belief that every responsibility should be performed with honesty and complete commitment.
Alongside his professional duties, he carried the responsibilities of family life with equal dedication. Married at a young age, he worked hard to provide opportunities and stability for his family. To support the education and future of his children, he managed additional responsibilities while ensuring that his official work was never affected. His efforts reflected his determination to overcome difficulties without depending on others.
However, one of the most defining aspects of Dr. Harnam Singh’s journey was his dedication towards studying and preserving the teachings of Kabir Sahib. Through extensive reading and research, he explored original scriptures, studied the works of various scholars, and compared different interpretations to understand the authentic message of Kabir Sahib’s Bani. His search took him beyond commonly available writings, encouraging him to examine various texts and develop his own understanding based on his study of original sources.

Phase 1: The Village Roots That Shaped a Life of Purpose
The early life of Dr. Harnam Singh Heera began in a simple village environment of Punjab, where life moved at its own pace and opportunities were limited. The surroundings in which he grew up were marked by difficulties that tested everyday resilience. Roads were not developed, transportation facilities were limited, and reaching educational institutions often required long journeys on foot. Yet, these circumstances became an important part of his early experiences, shaping his understanding of determination, patience, and the value of effort.
Born to S. Rattan Singh Heera and Mrs. Lachhman Kaur, Dr. Harnam Singh grew up in an environment where spiritual learning and moral values held great importance. His family’s connection with spiritual teachings played a significant role in shaping his thoughts from a young age. His father did not receive his education through formal schooling but through the guidance of saints and spiritual teachers. He had studied Sri Guru Granth Sahib for twelve years, and this deep connection with spiritual knowledge influenced the environment in which Dr. Harnam Singh was raised.
The teachings and values he received during his childhood became the foundation of his outlook towards life. His father’s understanding of spiritual literature introduced him to a world beyond ordinary learning. Through those early influences, he developed an interest in the teachings of Kabir Sahib, a connection that gradually became one of the most important directions of his life.
The challenges of his childhood did not stop him from pursuing education. He began his schooling in his village and studied there until the fourth grade. After completing his early education, he travelled to another school located a few kilometres away, walking the distance regularly to continue his studies. Later, he joined high school in Ropar city, which was around eight kilometres from his home. Those years required commitment and endurance, as education demanded not only academic effort but also the ability to overcome practical difficulties.
After completing his schooling, Dr. Harnam Singh gained admission to Government College, Ropar. However, circumstances did not allow him to continue his college education for long, and after about one and a half years, he had to leave his studies. His journey, however, did not end there. His desire to progress remained strong, and he continued working towards completing his education. After facing several challenges, including an unsuccessful attempt to find work in Delhi, he returned and completed his intermediate studies in 1959.
During these early years, the influence of his father’s spiritual guidance continued to remain with him. His interest in Kabir Sahib’s Bani became stronger, encouraging him to explore deeper meanings and understand the teachings that had inspired him. What started as an early influence gradually became a lifelong search for knowledge and understanding.

Phase 2 : A Journey Built on Learning and Discipline
After completing his intermediate studies in 1959, Dr. Harnam Singh Heera entered a new phase of life where education, professional responsibilities, and his search for knowledge began moving together. His early experiences had already taught him the importance of perseverance, and these lessons guided him as he looked for opportunities to build a stable future.
Before beginning his long professional journey, he experienced the difficulties of finding suitable employment. He first went to Delhi in search of work, but circumstances did not support him there, and he eventually returned. After coming back, he worked for a short period at Nangal Bhakra, continuing his efforts to establish himself. His determination remained steady, and his search finally led him towards Chandigarh, where a new opportunity awaited him.
In 1961, Dr. Harnam Singh appeared for an interview and was selected for government service through the Punjab School Education Board. This marked the beginning of a professional journey that would continue for several decades. He initially worked as a clerk in the Education Department, taking his first steps into an environment that demanded responsibility, accuracy, and commitment.
During the early period of his service, he also worked as a colourist at the Government of India Press for three months. Alongside this, he continued applying himself towards building a stable career. His selection in the Education Department provided him with the opportunity to serve in Chandigarh, where he remained dedicated to his responsibilities throughout his professional life.
His years in government service reflected his approach towards work. He believed that every responsibility deserved complete sincerity, and he never allowed personal challenges to affect his professional duties. His dedication and discipline earned him appreciation from his officers, who recognised his commitment and the quality of his work.
While his professional journey was progressing, his personal responsibilities were also increasing. He had married at a young age and had the responsibility of supporting his family. At that time, his salary was limited, and managing the needs of his children’s upbringing and education became a challenge. However, instead of depending on others, he searched for a solution through his own efforts.

Phase 3 : The Pursuit of Kabir’s Eternal Wisdom
While building his professional career, Dr. Harnam Singh Heera continued nurturing a deep connection with the teachings of Kabir Sahib. What began as an interest inspired by his father’s spiritual understanding gradually became a lifelong pursuit of learning, research, and preservation of knowledge. His journey was not limited to reading available writings; it became a search for deeper understanding and authenticity.
After joining government service in 1961, Dr. Harnam Singh found opportunities to continue his studies alongside his professional responsibilities. During his service, he had access to a large library, where he became a member and began reading extensively about Kabir Sahib. His curiosity led him towards the works of several renowned writers, including Hazari Prasad Dwivedi and Dr. Ram Kumar Verma, along with many other scholars who had written about Kabir Sahib.
As he studied different interpretations, he felt the need to look beyond existing explanations and explore the original sources himself. He observed that many writers had relied upon earlier works, and he wanted to understand Kabir Sahib’s message through authentic scriptures rather than only through secondary writings. This desire encouraged him to collect original texts from different places, including saints and other sources, and study them carefully.
Dr. Harnam Singh dedicated significant time to understanding the various scriptures associated with Kabir Sahib. He studied texts such as Kabir Sakhi Granth, Kabir Beejak Granth, Kabir Shabdavali Granth, Kabir Sagar Granth, and Anurag Sagar.
Through his study, he compared different versions and examined the authenticity of the available writings. He believed that some texts contained accurate representations while others included additions that did not reflect the original message.
His research was guided by the belief that knowledge should be examined with sincerity and understanding. He did not accept information simply because it was widely repeated. Instead, he continued studying, comparing, and reflecting upon different sources to develop a clearer understanding of Kabir Sahib’s teachings.
One of the important observations that emerged from his study was the limited awareness of Kabir Sahib’s teachings among Punjabi readers. He felt that although Kabir Sahib’s Bani was available in Hindi, many people in Punjab were unable to access it because of the language barrier. This thought became a turning point in his journey and inspired him to bring Kabir Sahib’s message closer to Punjabi readers through the Gurmukhi script.
