Growing up close to the Parthasarathy Temple, Dr. Unnikrishnan Ramachandran Unnithan developed a deep connection with the place that witnessed his earliest years. The village was not only his birthplace but also the setting where his first experiences, relationships, and values were formed.
During the initial years of his childhood, he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Amminni Kutty. At that time, both his parents were working professionals. His mother, Omana Kutty Amma, worked with Bombay Telephones as a telephone operator, while his father, KC Ramachandran Unnithan, served as an Indian Naval Police Officer. Their responsibilities required dedication and commitment, and his grandmother took on the important role of caring for him during his early childhood.
For nearly four years, from 1962 to 1966, he spent his formative years in Aranmula under the care of his grandmother. Coming from a modest family background, he entered an environment where many of his classmates had access to greater financial resources. Their parents were scientists, researchers, and professionals, while his own father worked as an assistant security officer after leaving the Indian Navy. However, within the walls of Atomic Energy Central School, these differences did not determine a student’s opportunities. The school provided an equal platform where ability, dedication, and effort mattered most.
This environment brought out a competitive quality that had already begun developing within him. He was surrounded by students who challenged him intellectually and encouraged him to continuously improve. Instead of feeling limited by circumstances, he used the opportunity to compete with those around him. Throughout his school years, he remained among the top-performing students in his class. He approached his teacher, Miss Chari, and asked why his name had not been included. She explained that other students were considered more deserving based on their performance at that stage. Rather than accepting the situation as a limitation, he took it as a challenge. He carried a strong belief that he could prove his capability through his results.
The challenge became a source of motivation. He set his mind on achieving the Dr. Ganguly Award, a recognition given to the student who performed best in science at his school. Although he was not initially considered among the expected top students, he remained determined to achieve that goal.
When the results were announced, he secured the third position in his school and achieved the highest marks in science. His performance earned him the Dr. Ganguly Award, proving that determination and consistent effort could change expectations. He later returned to meet his teacher and shared the result, and she acknowledged that he had turned the challenge into an achievement.
