Phase 1: Humble Beginnings in a Small Village

The story of Dr. Prasanta Kumar Jena begins not in a grand city or prestigious institution, but in the heart of a small, remote village in Balasore, Odisha, on 1st February 1955. It was in this quiet, unassuming corner of the world that he took his first steps toward a life that would later be defined by exceptional dedication to education, discipline, and service to humanity. His early life was marked by struggle, yet it was this very struggle that would mold his character and fuel the unrelenting drive that would carry him through the most challenging moments of his journey.

Dr. Jena’s formative years were far from easy. Growing up in a family of eight children, he learned early on what it meant to share, to care, and to support one another. However, it was not just the presence of many siblings that defined his childhood but the loss of his mother at a young age. He was only around 9 or 10 years old when this tragic event occurred, and it left an indelible scar on his heart. Yet, even in the face of this loss, Dr. Jena found strength in the love and support of his father, Late Haramohan Jena, and his elder sisters, who helped nurture him through those difficult times.

His father, a teacher by profession, was the bedrock of his early years. Late Haramohan Jena taught not just the curriculum but life’s most profound lessons. Through his actions, he instilled in Dr. Jena a sense of discipline, hard work, and the understanding that one must never give up, no matter the circumstance. While his father was known for his dedication to his work, he also displayed an unwavering resilience in the face of adversity. Even though their lives were not always easy, Haramohan Jena’s relentless positivity and calm demeanor became a model for Dr. Jena, who witnessed firsthand how one’s attitude can shape the course of life.

From his father, Dr. Jena learned more than just academic lessons. It was his father who introduced him to the joys of gardening, teaching him the patience it takes to nurture something to fruition. The love for nature that would later influence much of Dr. Jena’s life began in these early years, as he spent hours helping his father tend to the garden. These moments, though simple, carried a deeper message: growth takes time, effort, and persistence, whether in a garden or in one’s own life.

While his father played a central role in shaping his worldview, it was also the support of his three elder sisters that helped him navigate the most challenging days. When his mother passed away, his sisters stepped into roles of caretakers and emotional anchors. They not only took on the responsibility of the household but also became the guiding forces in Dr. Jena’s life. Their love and support provided him with the strength to face hardships and continue moving forward. Dr. Jena often speaks of the immense debt of gratitude he feels toward them, acknowledging that without their nurturing care, he may not have reached the heights he did in life. They taught him the importance of family, sacrifice, and resilience, and their influence stayed with him throughout his life.

“Sometimes, the greatest lessons come not from textbooks, but from the love, sacrifices, and examples set by those closest to us.”

Phase 2 : Family and Formative Influences

Dr. Prasanta Kumar Jena’s early life, though marked by challenges, was profoundly shaped by the unwavering love and sacrifices of his family. In the absence of his mother, who passed away when he was just a young boy, it was his father, Late Haramohan Jena, and his three elder sisters who filled the void and provided him with the strength, guidance, and values that would define his life’s journey. The loss of his mother could have been a devastating blow to his young heart, but the resilience and care shown by his family helped him rise above this tragedy and grow into the man he would become.

His father, a dedicated teacher, was the first and most important influence in his life. Late Haramohan Jena was more than just a father to Dr. Jena; he was a role model, a mentor, and a source of constant inspiration. Through his father’s example, Dr. Jena learned the value of hard work, discipline, and, most importantly, the power of optimism. Even though life was not always easy for their family, Haramohan Jena never allowed despair to take root. He met every challenge with grace and determination, showing his children by example that perseverance and a positive attitude were the keys to overcoming any obstacle. Dr. Jena often speaks fondly of his father’s ability to remain calm and composed, even in the most difficult of circumstances. It was his father’s strength that helped instill in him a sense of duty and resilience that would stay with him throughout his life.

Equally influential were Dr. Jena’s three elder sisters, who stepped in to help their father raise the family after their mother’s passing. In many ways, they became the mother figures that Dr. Jena lacked in his childhood. Their love and care were unconditional, and they provided him with the emotional support and guidance he needed to navigate the challenges of growing up without a mother. They not only cared for him physically but also imparted important life lessons that would serve him well throughout his career and personal life.

One of the most important lessons Dr. Jena learned from his sisters was the value of family. Despite the loss they had all experienced, they remained united and strong, always supporting each other through thick and thin. His sisters taught him the significance of loyalty, love, and sacrifice, qualities that would later define his own approach to family and community.

Despite the emotional turbulence of his early years, Dr. Jena found solace in his studies, using them as a means of escape and as a tool to build a better future. His father’s encouragement to prioritize education, no matter the circumstances, remained a guiding force throughout his academic journey.

His academic curiosity didn’t just stop with textbooks; it extended to extracurricular activities, where he actively participated in debates, elocution, and recitation competitions. These experiences honed his communication skills, public speaking abilities, and overall confidence, which would become essential tools throughout his professional career.

After completing his schooling, Dr. Jena went on to attend Regional College of Education, NCERT, where he pursued his BA and BEd degrees. This period of his life was a transformative one.
