Born on April 21, 1958, in the picturesque town of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Dr. Col. Luis Angel Cruz-Diaz entered the world surrounded by rich cultural traditions and a deep sense of community. His early years were shaped by the values instilled in him by his family, especially by his father, Jesus; his mother, Georgina; and his grandfather, Alejo, who played a pivotal role in his upbringing. It was through the wisdom and guidance of these three great people that Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz learned some of the most fundamental life lessons: the importance of self-reliance, the strength that comes from fearlessness, and the belief that challenges are meant to be faced head-on. These lessons would become the cornerstone of his personal and professional journey, serving as the foundation upon which all future endeavors would be built.
Growing up in Puerto Rico, he was raised in an environment where family values were paramount. His family instilled in him a deep respect for the hard work and dedication required to succeed, but it was the influence of his mother and grandfather that truly shaped his character. His grandfather, a man of quiet strength and resilience, was not just a figure of authority but a mentor who guided Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz through life’s most formative years. It was under his watchful eye that he developed a sense of independence and a desire to carve his own path, a path that would take him far beyond the boundaries of his childhood home.
The lessons of fearlessness and perseverance taught to him in his youth were reinforced during his school years. Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz was a keen student, always eager to learn and explore new ideas, but his thirst for knowledge extended beyond the classroom. He learned that life’s true lessons often come from experiences and people rather than textbooks. This sense of curiosity and a passion for discovering the unknown would serve him well in his future endeavors, both in his professional career and his personal growth.
At the age of 19, Dr. Col. Luis Angel Cruz-Diaz made the decision that would define much of his future, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. This move, motivated by a desire for purpose and the thrill of serving his country, marked the beginning of a journey that would not only transform him professionally but also personally. He had no way of knowing that the next 20-plus years would lay the foundation for his leadership philosophy, instilling in him the core values of discipline, courage, and service that would shape his entire life.
His early days in the Navy were far from easy. The rigorous training, the physical demands, and the mental challenges were intense, yet Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz met each one with determination. He quickly rose through the ranks, driven by his strong work ethic and natural leadership abilities. His time in the military was about more than just following orders; it was about developing a deep understanding of what it meant to lead and serve others. As a Division Officer (DIVO) and Field Training Officer (FTO), he was responsible for overseeing a team, a role that required not only technical proficiency but also emotional intelligence and a sense of responsibility for the welfare of his men. It was here that Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz learned the value of leading by example, of being the person who others could look to for guidance and strength in moments of uncertainty.
Throughout his military career, Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz was exposed to some of the most challenging and high-pressure situations. His role in naval surface warfare and joint special operations demanded that he stay calm under fire, make split-second decisions, and navigate complex logistical challenges. It was through these experiences that he began to build his leadership style, one rooted in pragmatism, decisiveness, and a deep sense of duty. In those moments when the stakes were high, he learned that leadership was not about issuing orders from a position of power but about earning the trust of those you lead by demonstrating competence, integrity, and a commitment to the mission.
After over two decades of dedicated service in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Col. Luis Angel Cruz-Diaz found himself standing at a crossroads. In 2001, he made the decision to transition from his active military career to a new phase in his life, one where his leadership abilities, honed in the heat of combat, would be tested in the civilian world. The transition was not an easy one, nor was it something he took lightly. Leaving behind the structured world of military life meant stepping into a realm filled with new challenges, but it also opened the door to fresh opportunities for growth.
The skills and experiences Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz gained during his military career became the foundation for his new path. The leadership, discipline, and ability to make swift decisions in high-pressure situations were assets that would serve him well as he ventured into the corporate world. He understood that in the business world, just as in the military, success depends on the ability to navigate complexity, lead diverse teams, and make decisions with integrity. However, the challenges were different. The stakes were no longer measured in terms of national security, but in business outcomes and organizational development.
His first major step into the civilian workforce came when he joined Bacardi Corporation, a company known for its international reach and complex operations. At Bacardi, Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz was entrusted with responsibilities that extended beyond the scope of his previous military roles. He worked on projects that required the integration of new technologies and the transformation of business processes. The experience was both humbling and invigorating. It was here that he began to grasp the nuances of corporate leadership, particularly in the areas of resource management, operations, and project management. The pace was fast, the expectations high, but he thrived in this environment. His ability to quickly adapt, combined with his ability to inspire those around him, made him an invaluable asset to the company.
Dr. Col. Luis Angel Cruz-Diaz’s journey has been one of steadfast service and empowerment. However, none of his accomplishments would have been possible without the support of those who have stood by him, offering their encouragement, wisdom, and strength.
First and foremost, he wishes to express his deepest gratitude to his family. Their unwavering support, especially that of his wife, Olga, has been a constant source of inspiration. Their shared values of compassion, integrity, and commitment to others have been the foundation upon which he has built his life’s work. Olga’s love and belief in him have provided the strength to continue pursuing his dreams, even in the face of challenges. He also thanks his granddaughter, Adiarys, whose presence fills his life with joy and reminds him daily of the importance of passing on knowledge and values to future generations.

Dr. Col. Cruz-Diaz recognizes that every step of his journey has been made easier and richer because of their insights and support. Lastly, he thanks the countless individuals, whether in Puerto Rico, through his work with Globcal International and Ecology Crossroads Cooperative Foundation Inc. and FPYF, or in his roles as a Kentucky Colonel and Goodwill Ambassador, who have trusted him to guide them. Their belief in his vision has made every effort worthwhile, and their dedication to the causes they share continues to inspire him.
