"Education plants the seeds of change, nurturing minds that will grow to shape the future with purpose."

Introduction

Dr. Arvind Kumar Lal Karna’s life is a living example of this very philosophy. His journey, marked by humble beginnings and numerous challenges, showcases the power of dedication, hard work, and selfless service. His story is not just about personal achievement but about the way he has impacted countless lives with his unwavering commitment to education, community development, and the values he holds dear.

Born in Madhopur Siso, a small village in Bihar, Dr. Karna’s early life was shaped by the struggles of his family. With his father working in a government job with a very modest salary and a large family to support, the challenges were many. Despite the difficulties, his parents, especially his father, instilled in him the importance of honesty, integrity, and selflessness. These values became the foundation of his life, guiding him through both personal and professional challenges.

Throughout his life, Dr. Karna has always believed that education is the most powerful tool for empowering individuals and communities. From his early days as a student, he recognised the importance of learning, even when the resources were limited. He walked several kilometres every day to attend school, often barefoot, and even when faced with financial hardships, he never gave up on his education. He borrowed books from friends, studied hard, and was determined to overcome the obstacles in his way.

His teaching career spans over 45 years, and during this time, he has mentored and educated countless students. His influence goes beyond just the classroom; he has been a community leader, working tirelessly to raise awareness about girls’ education, child marriage, and child labour. Through dramas, songs, and performances, he has spread messages of social change, impacting not only his students but also the entire community.

His journey also reflects his deep sense of gratitude for those who helped him along the way. He attributes much of his success to the moral guidance and support he received from his parents, wife, and mentors. His wife has been a pillar of strength, supporting him through financial difficulties and always standing by him. His friends, including Raghvendra Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Jha and Manoj Kumar, provided the moral and professional support that helped him grow into the leader he is today.

"The true strength of a person is shown not by the ease of their journey, but by their persistence in moving forward despite the obstacles they face."

Phase 1: Early Life and the Foundation of Values

Dr. Arvind Kumar Lal Karna was born on 7th February 1966 in the small village of Madhopur Siso, located in the Darbhanga district of Bihar. Raised in a family with twelve members and his father working in a low-paying government job, Dr. Karna’s early life was shaped by the challenges of financial instability. His father, Shri Anand Bihari Lal Karna, earned a modest salary, and life was not easy. Despite these difficulties, his parents instilled in him the values of honesty, integrity, and selflessness, which would guide him throughout his life.

His father, a panchayat sevak, was dedicated to serving the community, even though his income was limited. He was a man of moral courage, always demonstrating the importance of doing what is right, no matter the circumstances. Dr. Karna recalls how his father would quote Sanskrit shlokas every evening, emphasising duty and character. These teachings deeply influenced him, instilling in him the belief that true success comes from the goodness one does for others, not from wealth.

Dr. Karna’s mother, the Late Savitri Devi, played an equally crucial role in his life, though she is no longer with him. Her love, care, and guidance were vital during the formative years of his childhood. The balance of his father’s strictness and his mother’s nurturing spirit shaped him into the compassionate, selfless individual he is today.

Growing up in a rural area where proper schools were scarce, Dr. Karna’s education was informal at first. The nearest school was about 3 kilometres away, which was a significant obstacle for children in rural India. But despite these challenges, he had a deep thirst for knowledge. His father, understanding the importance of education, took it upon himself to teach his children reading, writing, and basic mathematics. Even though there was no school infrastructure around, he learned the basics from his father’s guidance.

"Education is not about filling minds with information but about sparking curiosity and empowering the next generation to make a difference."

Phase 2 : Early Teaching Journey and the Formation of Values

Dr. Arvind Kumar Lal Karna’s journey as an educator began long before he officially entered the classroom. His story begins with the hardships he faced growing up in a small village of Bihar, where educational resources were limited, and poverty was a constant companion. From an early age, he understood that education was the key to breaking free from these struggles. Yet, it was not just about his own learning; his desire to teach was deeply ingrained in him by the challenges he witnessed in his community, particularly for the underprivileged children in his village.

Born on 7th February 1966, Dr. Karna was raised by Shri Anand Bihari Lal Karna and the Late Savitri Devi in a home where every day was a battle against financial instability. His father worked as a panchayat sevak, earning a modest salary, which wasn’t enough to meet the needs of their large family. Despite the lack of material wealth, his parents taught him valuable life lessons rooted in honesty, integrity, and selflessness. These teachings formed the foundation of his values and approach to both life and teaching.

As a child, his schooling was anything but conventional. The nearest school was about 3 kilometres away, and the walk to school was often a difficult journey. Despite these hardships, he was determined to learn. Self-motivation and self-reliance became the cornerstones of his education. He would walk barefoot to school and often borrow books from friends to keep up with his studies. He credits these struggles with teaching him the value of hard work and the importance of education.

After completing his matriculation, Dr. Karna felt a strong calling to become an educator. His personal experiences with education, both the obstacles he faced and the limited support he received, motivated him to help others, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Rather than waiting for formal recognition, he began teaching children in his village, using whatever resources he had at hand.

"True education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. It’s about preparing children to face life with courage, creativity, and confidence."

Phase 3 : Expanding Influence and Professional Achievements

As Dr. Arvind Kumar Lal Karna moved forward in his career, his focus shifted from local community work to large-scale educational reforms. His commitment to improving rural education led him to take on more leadership roles that allowed him to extend his influence beyond the confines of his village.

Dr. Karna’s transition to a larger educational platform began when he became involved in the Bihar Education Project (BEP). This initiative aimed to improve the overall learning outcomes in the state, focusing on both academic excellence and holistic development. His role in this project was crucial, as he brought his innovative teaching methods to a broader audience.

He worked closely with state education authorities, district officers, and teachers across Bihar to develop and implement training programmes aimed at enhancing teaching quality. He was part of a team that designed and promoted teacher training workshops, where he encouraged educators to integrate art, drama, and songs into their lesson plans. His belief was that creative expression made learning more engaging and helped children connect better with the material.

Through these workshops, Dr. Karna trained hundreds of teachers, particularly in rural areas, and introduced them to innovative teaching methods that were designed to address the needs of marginalised communities. He showed teachers how to embrace creativity in the classroom and engage students through various activities. His hands-on approach to teacher training allowed him to make a significant impact, especially in schools with limited resources.

A significant milestone in his career came in 2013 when he was invited to participate in a workshop organised by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) in Patna. This workshop focused on integrating art-based education into the traditional curriculum. Dr. Karna was selected as a resource person for this prestigious event due to his extensive experience in teaching and his unique approach to art integration.
