“True resilience is not about avoiding the weight of life’s burdens, but about transforming them into stepping stones for growth and success.”

Introduction

Every remarkable journey begins with a seed of resilience, often planted in the harshest of soils. Dr. Rafiel Azim was born on 17 May 1995 with his family’s livelihood being in the humble hustle of street hawking. His earliest memories were of a squeaky old baby stroller, not carrying him, but laden with goods his father pushed each day to their selling spot. That stroller carried more than merchandise; it bore the quiet weight of ambition, survival, and an unspoken promise that their story would not end in hardship. From selling food on sidewalks to running a small cafeteria, and eventually building a catering business that still sustains them today, his parents embodied persistence. His father’s background in hospitality and his mother’s tireless adaptability meant they faced setbacks not with surrender, but with reinvention. Even when life stripped away the comforts of their “glory days,” they rebuilt, plate by plate, customer by customer. These early lessons imprinted on young Rafiel a truth he would carry for life: dignity is not defined by the work you do, but by the integrity with which you do it.

Education became both his escape and his proving ground. With limited resources, Dr. Rafiel learned early to adapt selling earrings at eight, helping in the family cafeteria by twelve, and juggling high school studies with part-time jobs. Inspired by moral giants like Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), innovative mind as Ismail Al-Jazari and visionary leaders such as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he pursued knowledge not just for credentials, but as a means to serve. From self-taught programming projects in Visual Basic to hands-on technical work in mechatronics, Dr. Rafiel’s path merged curiosity with discipline. His rise from an “average student” to one of his college’s top achievers was fueled by a vow, to always give his best, regardless of circumstances. Whether leading as Student Council President, innovating with projects like the “Garden Hydrogenerator,” or mastering automation systems that outperformed industry standards, he embraced challenges as opportunities to grow.

Today, Dr. Rafiel Azim stands as more than an engineer or innovator, he is a testament to resilience, lifelong learning, and the power of turning obstacles into stepping stones. The blueprints of his dream were drawn in the margins of hardship, but built with the tools of integrity, skill, and an unwavering belief that value matters more than titles. His story is not just about where he has been, but about how far determination can take you when you refuse to give up.

“It’s not the weight we carry, but the way we carry it, that defines our journey.”

Phase 1: A Story of Beginnings

Born on 17 May 1995, Dr. Rafiel Azim entered a world where survival was a daily challenge. His earliest years unfolded in a family whose livelihood began on the streets, not in comfort or stability, but in the relentless hustle of a street hawker’s life. For his family, every sale counted, every customer mattered, and every day meant another test of perseverance. His father’s daily journey was a symbol of that determination: walking one kilometer to reach the spot where he would set up his stall, pushing goods and equipment not in a professional trolley but in an old, weathered baby stroller. That stroller squeaked under the weight of supplies, yet it carried more than physical goods, it carried the ambitions and unspoken dreams of a family determined not to give up. Growing up, he didn’t know the meaning of luxury. What he learned instead was the value of resilience, the dignity in hard work, and the power of persistence even in the face of hardship.

Slowly, step by cautious step, the family began to progress. From selling on the streets, they moved to running a small cafeteria, a modest establishment but one that marked a turning point. Customers started to see them not just as street vendors but as business owners. The cafeteria grew into a canteen operation, and in time, they took an even bigger leap, venturing into catering. Around fifteen years ago, that catering business became the cornerstone of the family’s livelihood and has continued to operate successfully ever since. The journey was far from easy. Each transition brought with it new challenges: more responsibilities, financial risks, and the uncertainty of whether the business would survive. Yet, with determination and unity, they pushed forward. What began with a baby stroller full of goods eventually evolved into a business serving meals for events and functions, a transformation built on grit, sacrifice, and an unwavering work ethic.

Dr. Rafiel’s mother’s contribution was equally remarkable. She was a woman who adapted to whatever circumstances demanded. In the early years, she worked wherever there was an opportunity, factories, cafeterias, or any place that offered a day’s wage. Her work was physically exhausting, but she rarely complained.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Phase 2 : Lessons, Leaders, and Lifelong Learning

Dr. Rafiel Azim’s journey of education and personal development was deeply intertwined with the examples set by the individuals he admired. From a young age, he drew inspiration from figures of profound moral and intellectual stature. As a Muslim, his foremost role model was Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), whose life exemplified compassion, wisdom, and perseverance. Beyond spiritual guidance, Dr. Rafiel inspired by the innovative Ismail Al-Jazari who was a polymath and the pioneer of automation. The greatest value which inspired was his iconic characteristic; creator rather than just a designer and globally presumed as the father of robotics. In view of balancing both scientific and society, Dr. Rafiel looked up to modern-day leaders who combined intellect with public service. Among them, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, left a particularly strong impression. Dr. Rafiel admired Dr. Kalam not only as a statesman but also as a scientist and technologist who seamlessly bridged governance and innovation. He often described Dr. Kalam as a beacon of humanity and a personal exemplar of leadership, dedication, and curiosity. In fact, Dr. Rafiel referenced Dr. Kalam’s leadership principles in his own Executive Master’s thesis, demonstrating the profound impact that these role-models had on shaping his professional and personal ethos.

Dr. Rafiel’s formal education, though marked by financial and social challenges, became a defining arena for growth. Attending primary school was not easy; his family had no connections or financial privileges, which sometimes made teachers uneasy with his presence. He recalled experiencing strict and extra disciplinary treatment that he could never fully understand, even as an adult. Yet, rather than discouraging him, these challenges fostered resilience and self-reliance. At just eight years old, he began his first small business, selling girls’ earrings to supplement the family income. Despite facing disciplinary actions, Dr. Rafiel approached the experience with caution and integrity, determined not to create additional burdens for his parents. These early encounters with adversity taught him important lessons about responsibility, creativity, and the value of earning through effort.

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

Phase 3 : Professional Journey and Technical Expertise

Dr. Rafiel Azim began his professional journey in technical roles during his studies, gaining foundational experience that would shape his career. In July 2016, he joined Pacific Engineering, Petaling Jaya, as an Assembly Technician (On Job Training). In this role, he maintained stock levels, performed product assembly according to specifications, and aligned parts using both hand and power tools. His tasks included working with semi-automatic machinery and welding equipment while following blueprints and diagrams to meet industry standards. Dr. Rafiel inspected completed products to ensure quality and adherence to company protocols, reporting any defective materials promptly to supervisors. Collaboration with team members was key, and he developed a strong sense of workflow management and time-sensitive task execution. This early exposure to practical engineering laid the groundwork for his problem-solving approach, attention to detail, and commitment to quality, skills that would carry forward into all subsequent roles.

In August 2017, Dr. Rafiel transitioned to a Maintenance Person role at Natural Wellness Biotech, Cheras, where he was responsible for ensuring production equipment and machinery met operational standards. He maintained compliance with GMP, MS ISO 9001:2000, MS 1900:2005, and PIC/S standards, conducting regular inspections to identify potential equipment malfunctions. He carried out machine replacements, repairs, and maintenance in line with strict guidelines and SOPs, while reporting deviations to superiors. Additionally, he maintained essential facilities including raw material rooms, quality labs, R.O water treatment systems, HVAC, air compressors, backup generators, and various mechanical and electronic devices. Acting as a member of the First and Rescue Team (FRT), he ensured continuity of operations during emergencies. This position enhanced his ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, adhere to regulatory requirements, and maintain operational efficiency.

While building his technical foundation, Dr. Rafiel also began working part-time with Zam Zam Rezeki Catering, Cheras, starting in January 2010 and continuing to the present. In this role, he performed equipment maintenance and repairs, covering mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems.
