“The foundation of greatness is built in the heart.”

Phase 1: Early Years and Formative Experiences

The life of Dr. Cedric J. Harris started on the lively yet serene island of Dominica, an area renowned for its magnificent landscapes and the resiliency of its inhabitants. The principles of perseverance, community, and hard work instilled in Dr. Cedric by his family had an impact on him from an early age. Growing up as the sixth of seven children in a large family where each member had a significant impact on the others was a source of immense strength for him. Despite the difficulties of growing up on a tiny island with few resources, he would always have the love and encouragement of his family at his side.

Growing up, Dr. Cedric witnessed firsthand the hardships his family endured in meeting their basic necessities. Long hours and hard work were the norm for his father, Austin Harris, who worked as a crane operator and fisherman. Dr. Cedric and his siblings were expected to join in on the fishing tradition as early as they could walk, just like his father’s work. On Saturdays, Dr. Cedric and his brothers would go fishing with their dad. They would assist in setting the traps and hauling in the catch of the day. Throughout these formative years, Dr. Cedric learnt the value of perseverance, independence, and hard work.

In Dr. Cedric’s youth, fishing had an important role, but it was sports that won his heart. Dr. Cedric has always enjoyed jogging. He enjoyed competing with his friends, jogging for enjoyment, and even doing errands for his family. It didn’t take long for him to realise that running was more than a hobby—it was an intrinsic talent and a driving force in his life. Taking part in local athletic events brought up his innate running ability. Despite the absence of professional tracks and facilities, Dr. Cedric possessed an unmatched determination to excel in athletics. With nothing more than his passion for the sport and his dedication, he would train whenever and wherever he could, frequently jogging in grassy fields or dirt roads.

Dr. Cedric owes a great deal of gratitude, both athletically and personally, to his mother, Margaret Harris. His mother, Margaret, stressed how important education was, and his father stressed how important hard work was. She thought athletics might pave the way, but that education was the key to lasting success. Thanks to her encouragement and direction, Dr. Cedric was able to maintain a healthy equilibrium and achieve outstanding success in school and on the pitch. Throughout his career, Dr. Cedric would remember her repeated insistence that education was the path to a better future. Dr. Cedric was able to thrive in the classroom and on the track because his mother, Margaret, instilled in him a balanced view of life that emphasised education.

His brothers, in addition to his parents, shaped Dr. Cedric as he grew up. He learnt about the value of family and worked together with his siblings as the seventh child of a large family. The principles of cooperation and mutual respect that he learnt as a child in a big family—the importance of everyone pitching in and helping out—shaped his attitude as a coach and mentor.

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”

Phase 2 : Discovering Athletics and Pursuing Excellence

Dr. Cedric J. Harris’s foray into athletics was marked by an unfaltering resolve to conquer challenges, refine his craft, and explore possibilities beyond his comfort zone, in addition to his inherent talent. His athletic enthusiasm blossomed as a young student in Dominica, showcasing his innate abilities and strong work ethic. Nevertheless, Dr. Cedric overcame the obstacles of few resources, restricted exposure, and sheer perseverance to become a globally acclaimed athlete, paving the way for his subsequent achievements. The second phase follows Dr. Cedric as he goes from being a promising local athlete to a rising star on the global stage.

Dr. Cedric’s love for sports began at a young age. Growing up in Dominica, he took up jogging as a hobby and later found that it was a wonderful opportunity to test his limits and see how he stacked up against others. It didn’t take long for Dr. Cedric to establish himself as a promising track and field athlete while he was a student. Due to his persistence, Dr. Cedric was able to succeed despite the island’s lack of sophisticated training facilities. His constant commitment to growth allowed him to outperform his peers even in the absence of an appropriate track or advanced coaching.

It wasn’t until Dr. Cedric competed in regional events that his athletic potential became apparent. During his teenage years, he showcased his talents in the 100-metre, 200-metre, and 800-metre events at the local national championships. During his participation in these sports, Dr. Cedric showcased incredible stamina and speed, achieving both individual and team records. On the track, he was more than simply another athlete; he became a formidable rival in no time. He became known as one of the best athletes in Dominica after his impressive performances in various regional competitions.

The turning point in Dr. Cedric’s career, though, came in 1987. Among the top Caribbean athletes, he triumphed in the 800 metres at the Barbados-based Texaco Invitational Track and Field Championship. As it was Dr. Cedric’s first big win that garnered notice outside of Dominica, it was a watershed moment in his career. Winning in Barbados would significantly boost Dr. Cedric’s confidence and self-esteem, and it would unlock opportunities globally. International scouts and coaches took notice of Dr. Cedric at this tournament, altering the course of his athletic career.

Following his victory in the Caribbean, Dr. Cedric faced an unexpected challenge that would test his determination: the SAT. The Dominican educational system at the time did nothing to prepare pupils for SATs and other standardised tests, so Dr. Cedric was at a disadvantage when the chance to attend school and get training in the US presented itself. Dr. Cedric had to take the SAT since it was a must for applying for scholarships to schools in the US. This was an opportunity he couldn’t afford to miss.

“The harder the battle, the sweeter the victory.”

Phase 3 : The Journey to Higher Education and Competing at the Highest Level

For Dr. Cedric J. Harris, Phase 3 of his life was marked by a journey that combined his twin passions: athletics and education. It was during this phase that Dr. Cedric shifted from local success in Dominica to an internationally competitive athlete, training and studying in the United States while battling numerous challenges to succeed both on the track and in the classroom. This phase of his life laid the foundation for his transition from an athlete to a coach and educator, ultimately changing the trajectory of his career and deepening his commitment to mentorship and service.

In 1991, Dr. Cedric received a life-changing scholarship offer to study and train in the United States. This opportunity was a direct result of his outstanding performance at the 1987 Texaco Invitational Track and Field Championships, where he won the 800 meters. It was a pivotal moment in his career, as it gave him the chance to leave Dominica, train at world-class facilities, and compete against some of the best athletes in the world.

The transition from Dominica to the United States was filled with challenges. For Dr. Cedric, it was more than just a cultural shift—it was an entirely new world. Growing up in a small island community where the rhythm of life was closely tied to family, work, and community, Dr. Cedric was now immersed in a bustling and unfamiliar environment in New York. He faced not only the challenges of adapting to a different culture and climate but also the pressures of maintaining academic performance while pursuing his athletic dreams.

The first challenge Dr. Cedric encountered was the cold winter of New York, which was a stark contrast to the warm climate of Dominica. However, he adapted quickly, and the initial shock gave way to a growing appreciation for the opportunity he had. Despite the cultural differences and the physical challenges of adjusting to life in the U.S., Dr. Cedric kept his focus on what mattered most—his education and his athletic career.

One of the most significant hurdles Dr. Cedric faced early in his academic journey was the SAT exam, a requirement for his scholarship. Unlike students in the U.S., Dr. Cedric had never been exposed to standardized tests like the SATs during his schooling in Dominica. He found the exam’s structure to be difficult and, after his first attempt, failed to meet the required score.
