“Success involves breaking out of expected patterns in order to look at things in a different way.”

Dedication

This biography is lovingly dedicated to my beloved parents, the late Mr. Wee Kit Guang and Mdm. Tan Kheng Hwa, whose courage, determination, and sacrifices became the unwavering foundation of my life. Father, your journey from the humble fields of Chai Chee to becoming the steadfast pillar of our family continues to inspire every step I take. Through your quiet wisdom, persistent work, and belief in the power of learning, you sowed the seeds of resilience and hope that I now carry forward.

To my mother, your unyielding spirit and nurturing heart held our family together through every trial and transition. Your strength in the face of uncertainty, your willingness to brave new lands, and your endless devotion taught me that love is action, and that endurance is its truest form. Though life denied you many comforts, you gave all you could, guiding me with discipline, warmth, and the courage to dream beyond circumstances.

To my brothers, whose companionship, support, and shared struggles shaped my earliest ambitions and joys, I am grateful for every moment of love and learning we have known together.

To my extended family, teachers, friends, mentors, and those who trusted me through every challenge, your encouragement has been the scaffolding for each new chapter I have built, personally and professionally. Together, you have taught me the beauty of community and the importance of lifting others as we rise.

And to all those who, like me, began their journey with little more than hope and the drive to persevere, may this story remind you that every humble beginning holds the promise of greatness. Strength learned in adversity and kindness shown in struggle can carry us farther than we ever imagined.

“Create with the heart; build with the mind.”

Phase 1: Journey across Continents

Dr. Wee Shoo Chern’s story begins long before she drew her first breath, rooted in the intertwined narratives of migration, sacrifice, and tenacity that define many traditional Hainanese families. Born as the second of three children to Mr. Wee Kit Guang and Mdm. Tan Kheng Hwa, Aster grew up surrounded by intricate legacies and a deeply ingrained resilience for survival.

Her father, the late Mr. Wee Kit Guang, traced his beginnings to the year of the Dragon, in the rural enclave of Chai Chee, on Singapore’s eastern flank. At that time, Chai Chee was a patchwork of farmland, families toiling on their own diminutive plots. Mr. Wee’s heritage extended across the South China Sea, as both his parents originated from Wan Ning, a windswept seaside town on Hainan Island, China. This connection anchored Aster’s paternal line to the rhythms of coastal life and the ever-present hope that came with searching for new horizons.

On her mother’s side, history wove a tale no less courageous. Mdm. Tan Kheng Hwa was born in Pu Tian, a coastal hamlet in what is now Fu Jian province, China. Her roots lay deep in the Heng Hwa dialect group, a testament to the diversity and fluid migrations within Fujian’s diaspora. Like so many in her generation, Aster’s maternal grandfather sailed southward on creaking cargo ships. The voyage lasted months in cramped, airless quarters with merely watery porridge, a bell’s toll the only punctuation in endless days. Upon arrival, quarantine awaited on St. John Island before men, and later their families, could begin carving a life from Singaporean soil. These separations stretched on for years. Letters written by paid scribes in Chinatown ferried news and hope between worlds, signaling when families might reunite as strong, nucleated units in the unfamiliar land.

Yet, some reunions bore the cost of heartbreak. When Mdm. Tan finally received a summons and the means to join her father in Singapore, fate intervened. Just as the family prepared to return to China (after years apart) due to pressing events, young Kheng Hwa, already marked by an uncanny sixth sense, refused, threatening to hurl herself into the sea rather than leave the adopted home she barely knew. Conceding to her wishes, her mother entrusted her to a fellow villager.

“Enthusiasm is excitement with inspiration, motivation, and a pinch of creativity.”

Phase 2 : Degrees Shaping a Dreamer

Dr. Wee Shoo Chern’s journey through education was shaped by simple beginnings, strong family support, and her own unwavering determination. Growing up in Singapore during a time of change and nation-building, Aster learned to value each opportunity the classroom offered. School was not simply a place to attend, it was a privilege that many in her family’s generation did not have.

Aster’s first taste of structured learning began in 1978, when she entered a government-run kindergarten in her neighborhood. This brief but important year was her introduction to formal education, where she started to build the foundation of reading, writing, and curiosity about the world around her.

Following kindergarten, she moved on to Opera Esther Girls’ Primary School, spending six formative years there. It was a time of discovery and friendships, but also a period of discipline. Aster understood that education could change the course of a person’s life. Her efforts paid off at the end of primary school, when she achieved results within the top 10% of her cohort on the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), a highly competitive national test in Singapore.

With her strong PSLE scores, Aster had the chance to choose from the best secondary schools in the eastern region of Singapore. She opted for Tanjong Katong Girls’ School, known for its high discipline and academic rigor. Her mother believed single-sex education allowed girls to focus better on studies and avoid distractions. For Aster, secondary school meant four years of hard work, growth, and preparing for even tougher exams. Outside school hours, she began tutoring other students at just 17 years old, a way to both help her family’s finances and practice her skill in sharing knowledge.

After secondary school, Aster faced big decisions about her next steps. She decided on Singapore Polytechnic, enrolling in the Electrical Engineering program. This course was not easy. The technical demands were high, and every semester brought new challenges.

“Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all.”

Phase 3 : Learning from Every Step

After years of hard study and training, Dr. Wee Shoo Chern stepped into the working world with grit, curiosity, and a strong sense of duty. Her career would not follow just one path, over the years, she took on many roles, stacked up real-life experiences in different industries, and met people from every walk of life.

Teaching was one of her first passions. Aster started teaching students, including those with special needs and from less privileged backgrounds. She also tutored adults hoping to learn new skills or gain better job chances. Her approach was always full of patience, understanding, and care. She found joy in seeing her students grow, not just in knowledge, but in self-confidence too. Teaching others taught her how to connect, adapt, and communicate, no matter the age or background of her students.

As her qualifications grew, so did her work opportunities. Dr. Wee Shoo Chern became involved with training and managing both young students and adult learners at many levels. She guided learners to master skills, follow proper procedures, and succeed in their tests. This work took her to schools, training centers, and community workshops all over Singapore.

But Dr. Wee Shoo Chern’s career was not limited to education. She built a name for herself in Singapore’s demanding security industry, where her hard-earned technical knowledge and people skills proved very valuable. Over the years, she worked in 160 different sites, each with its own unique set of challenges and people.

Some places were lively, like busy shopping malls and commercial buildings, where she learned to stay calm in crowded or chaotic situations. She also took responsibility for residential security at condominiums and luxury bungalows, helping families and residents feel safe. In warehouses, dormitories, hotels, and factories, Aster sharpened her skills in managing emergencies, preventing risks, and teaching others to do the same.
