Phase 1: Formative Years of Values

The earliest memories of Dr. Rehana Hassan unfold within a home shaped by service, discipline, and warmth where both parents were government employees who modeled dignity and dedication every day. Her mother was a teacher and she used to call her as Mother Teresa, a name that captured a generous nature and a constant readiness to help others in need. Her father served as S. Officer whose steady resolve and ethical clarity became the template for strength that she would later draw upon to face life’s most difficult moments. These two figures formed a complementary core that balanced compassion with fortitude and set the tone for a childhood grounded in purpose and care.

Srinagar was the backdrop of schooling and daily routines while Jammu became the cherished winter canvas for leisure and extended family connections. The rhythm of the union territory’s administrative cycle meant summers in Srinagar and winters in Jammu, and her father would shift for six months to Jammu while the children joined during the two-month winter vacation. Those weeks in Jammu shimmered with joy because vacation time allowed space for exploration, unhurried conversations, and the laughter of cousins and friends. The contrast with Srinagar, where schoolwork and homework structured the days, helped her develop a balanced sense of responsibility and celebration.

Childhood took place before the era of constant digital presence and that absence of gadgets made room for shared experiences that were rich with texture and meaning. Outdoor activities, long afternoons with cousins, and spontaneous neighborhood play taught cooperation, initiative, and social ease. The streets and courtyards became classrooms where empathy was practiced and confidence took root, while the home remained a sanctuary of encouragement and expectations. Her parents were cooperative and caring, yet they were also appropriately strict, believing that discipline bestowed freedom by giving children the tools to carry themselves with integrity.

“Arise, awake, and do not stop until the goal is reached.”

Phase 2: The Road to Schooling

In the school corridors of Srinagar, the day began with a clear sense of direction and ended with the quiet satisfaction that comes from focused effort. The city’s rhythm moved steadily around morning assemblies, attentive classes, and evenings reserved for assignments, revision, and reading. Each academic term called for consistency and a willingness to improve through small, daily steps. The classroom became a place where curiosity found structure, and structure in turn deepened curiosity. Lessons asked for patience, practice, and reflection, and these habits settled into her routine with natural ease. In this environment, diligence was not only expected, it felt rewarding because it led to visible progress and quiet confidence.

The friendships that formed in Srinagar were grounded in shared goals and mutual encouragement. Classmates often compared notes after school, discussing what a teacher had emphasized and how best to remember key concepts. Group study emerged as a practical solution to difficult chapters, and she learned to listen closely, identify what others understood better, and exchange strategies that worked. This reciprocal environment made learning collaborative and gave her a steady support system. Over time, the ability to study with others without losing personal focus became a hallmark of her approach to education.

In Srinagar, teachers recognized that she embraced responsibility without needing reminders. She prepared for tests by building a sequence of manageable tasks rather than cramming at the last minute. This practice encouraged depth over haste. It also nurtured a careful reading habit in which every paragraph had a purpose and every page a place in a larger narrative. When an assignment called for thoroughness, she saw it as an opportunity to practice clear thinking and precise expression. Through this steady effort, she cultivated an inner standard that did not depend on external pressure.

“Cultivation of mind should be the ultimate aim of human existence.”

Phase 3: The Focus on Higher Education

The journey into higher education began with a clear academic inclination that matured into a committed pursuit of zoology, pedagogy, and research. The first milestone was the Bachelor of Science in Zoology at the University of Kashmir, where foundational concepts in animal biology, structure, and function were studied with growing depth. The undergraduate environment encouraged methodical study habits and a strong command over core scientific principles. Laboratory sessions introduced careful observation and accurate record keeping, while coursework trained the mind to interpret data with patience and precision. This stage prepared a firm base for advanced study through steady engagement with the discipline and a consistent focus on conceptual clarity.

Graduate study opened new intellectual horizons through the Master of Science in Zoology at Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh. This phase brought rigorous exposure to advanced zoological frameworks and a vibrant residential campus life that fostered both scholarly growth and personal development. Classroom learning integrated with research oriented assignments that demanded critical thinking and sustained effort. The experience of living in a diverse academic community expanded perspectives and built confidence in collaborating across different backgrounds. The two years in Aligarh became a formative period where the intensity of scientific study met the richness of intercultural friendships and campus traditions.

Aligarh offered a living learning environment where students from many regions came together in shared pursuit of knowledge. The friendships formed with students from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar became particularly meaningful and enduring. These bonds nurtured understanding across languages and customs and created a supportive circle that made demanding academic phases more navigable. Celebrating Diwali with fellow students was a memorable experience that fostered respect for traditions and joy in collective celebration. These experiences strengthened interpersonal skills, built cultural awareness, and reinforced the belief that scholarship thrives in communities that value both excellence and inclusivity.
