The city of Lucknow, known for its culture, discipline, and timeless grace, provided the earliest foundation in the life of Dr. Sumit Shukla. Born and nurtured in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, his childhood years carried the essence of both simplicity and aspiration. His family background was the first environment that molded him into a balanced personality, one who valued discipline, respect, and dedication. His father served in government service for many years with diligence and eventually retired after a fulfilling tenure. His mother, a devoted homemaker, ensured that their household was always filled with warmth and encouragement. Alongside, his younger brother added companionship and vitality to the family space, making the home atmosphere supportive and nurturing for every step of growth.
His schooling years were spent at St. Fidelis College in Lucknow, a Christian missionary institution well known for its structured education and values. The academic journey there guided not only his intellectual growth but also opened several avenues of exploration beyond the textbooks. He developed a strong sense of balance between learning and extracurricular involvement, traits that would later shape his outlook towards professional and personal life.
As a young student, he showed signs of being more than just academically inclined. Sports, community service, and adventurous pursuits occupied equal space in his growing years. Among all activities, football became his primary passion during school. The institution had excellent facilities that encouraged students to take sports seriously, and young Sumit embraced the opportunity with full spirit. Representing his school in tournaments gave him exposure to teamwork, competition, and the discipline that comes with athletic training. Competing at inter school and multi school levels created not only moments of joy but also instilled resilience and the ability to perform under pressure.
After making a strong start in Gurgaon, he accepted a new challenge at Tata Technologies in Jamshedpur, where he served as a Technical Project Consultant. This role exposed him to a vibrant industrial setting where ideas had to meet not only client expectations but also strict timelines of the automotive field. The opportunity brought him closer to manufacturing realities and deepened his ability to translate design specifications into practical outcomes. Collaborating with employees from diverse backgrounds broadened his perspective and reinforced the importance of teamwork.
The next phase of his career moved him to Pune, a city known for its engineering and industrial ecosystem. Returning to HELLA, this time in Pune, marked the beginning of the longest and most impactful chapter of his professional journey. Here he steadily advanced through roles of increasing responsibility, moving from Design Engineer to Senior Design Engineer, later to Technical Lead, then Senior Technical Lead, and eventually reaching the position of Group Leader for Mechanical Design. Each advancement was not merely a change of designation but a recognition of consistent performance, leadership, and contribution to global projects.
Phase 2 : Nurturing Passion for Engineering

The transition from adolescence to higher learning was a decisive moment in the life of Dr. Sumit Shukla. While his schooling created a foundation of discipline and curiosity, it was during his senior secondary education that a more defined path began to appear. The theoretical concepts of physics fascinated him in a way no other subject did. The elegance of formulas, the principles of motion, and the mysterious relationship between energy and matter intrigued him deeply. This growing interest gradually transformed into a passion that influenced the direction of his future studies.
As he moved through the final years of school, automobiles captured his imagination. The sleek design of cars, the power of engines, and the innovation in technology connected immediately with his scientific temperament. Reading about engines, studying the performance of vehicles, and discussing advancements in mechanical systems were activities he enjoyed during his free time. His natural desire to examine how things worked was no longer limited to curiosity. It was an emerging goal that pointed towards engineering as a professional pursuit. Mechanical engineering appeared as a natural choice, convincing him that this was the most appropriate field where his curiosity, technical ability, and vision could converge.
With a clear focus, he enrolled at Integral University for a Bachelor of Technology with specialization in Mechanical Engineering. The years at the university exposed him to a completely new level of learning. Unlike school education, which centered on theoretical foundations, undergraduate studies emphasized a blend of theory and practice. The first year opened gateways to general understanding of engineering sciences, while subsequent years steered him towards depth in core mechanical concepts.
Laboratory sessions became some of the most treasured experiences. He dedicated himself to applying theoretical knowledge to practical experiments. Observing results, analyzing errors, and learning from outcomes enhanced both his understanding and confidence. Group assignments and projects shaped his collaborative spirit, teaching him how to listen to ideas and contribute meaningfully in a team environment. This spirit of collaboration would later evolve into strong leadership qualities during his professional career.
Teachers and mentors played crucial roles during these years. The head of the department recognized his curiosity and dedication, assigning him projects that challenged his problem solving skills. These projects required him not only to study but also to design, test, and evaluate outcomes, bringing him a sense of creative fulfillment. He learned perseverance, particularly when results did not align with expectations. This taught him that setbacks were not failures but opportunities to rethink methods and approach from new perspectives.
Phase 3 : The Professional Journey

When the time for academic learning came to a close, a new phase began. Transitioning from a world of classrooms and workshops into the environment of offices, factories, and global projects was both exciting and challenging for Dr. Sumit Shukla. The shift required him to adapt quickly, to carry the lessons of education into real life applications, and to embrace responsibility as an engineer contributing to industry.
His first professional opportunity was with HELLA in Gurgaon. Entering as a Graduate Engineer Trainee, he stepped into the specialist field of design and development where accuracy, passion, and persistence carried greater weight than theoretical excellence. The transition was not without its hurdles. Suddenly college routines seemed far removed from the pace of corporate expectations. Communication within teams, finding a mentor, and adapting to professional discipline became the first set of challenges. Yet he quickly discovered that those same qualities of adaptability, time management, and curiosity nurtured earlier in life provided him with the strength to adjust. Day by day, he developed confidence and earned trust from seniors who observed not only his sincerity but also his willingness to learn and grow.
His responsibilities involved both creativity and technical sharpness. Designing products meant converting abstract ideas into workable solutions. It was here that he began gaining exposure to the entire lifecycle of a product, from initial sketches and digital models to physical prototypes and industrial validation. Knowledge of design tools such as CATIA V5, coupled with skills in geometric dimensioning and tolerance analysis, became indispensable. He was now handling complex interfaces between mechanical structures and electrical components, ensuring that every design aligned with precision. This stage taught him that engineering was an art of details where even a small modification held significant consequences.
By 1989, Dr. Khoo transitioned into the corporate sector, accepting a role as Training Officer/Coordinator at IMPRIMIS Technology Components in Penang. This shift marked a critical evolution—from shaping young students to developing human capital in the high-tech manufacturing world. At IMPRIMIS, he established a comprehensive Operator Training and Certification System, setting a standard for technical excellence and workforce readiness. His responsibilities also included Training Needs Analysis, policy formulation, and Quality Control Circles (QCC) implementation—initiatives that empowered teams to solve problems collaboratively and innovate from within. His leadership extended to the Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC), where he served as Vice-Chairman of the Tea Talks and Seminar Committee, initiating dialogue between industry and academia.
