Phase 1 : The Roots of Life

“I was born in Kashmir and left during the turmoil of the ‘90s. Challenges shaped my resilience, and every obstacle became a stepping stone to growth.”

Dr. Sanjeev Raina was born on December 23, 1965, in South Kashmir, a land of stunning landscapes yet marred by conflict. His early years were spent in Baramulla, a tense border town where military presence, convoys, and the echoes of war were a part of daily life. The defining moment of his childhood came during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, when his family had to take shelter in trenches as fighter jets roared above and bomb blasts echoed in the distance. These experiences instilled in him a strong sense of resilience, patriotism, and appreciation for the sacrifices made by the armed forces.

His upbringing was deeply influenced by his parents. His father, Mr. Jawahar Raina, was a textile engineer and a bureaucrat known for his intelligence, leadership, and exceptional communication skills. He was a gifted writer and a respected public administrator, leaving a lasting impression on Dr. Raina. His mother, Mrs. Asha Raina, on the other hand, was a spiritual woman who emphasized honesty, humility, and strong moral values. The blend of his father’s strategic thinking and his mother’s ethics shaped Dr. Raina into a well-rounded individual who balanced ambition with integrity.

Growing up with two siblings—a highly educated sister who settled into family life and a younger brother who chose an independent path—Dr. Raina learned the importance of strong family bonds despite differing life choices. However, as turmoil intensified in Kashmir in the late 1980s and early 1990s, life became increasingly uncertain. Like many others, his family was forced to leave their homeland, a heart-wrenching decision that meant leaving behind cherished memories and the place he had always called home. Despite these challenges, Dr. Raina moved forward with determination, transforming obstacles into stepping stones for success. His early experiences of conflict, resilience, and adaptability became the foundation of his future achievements.

Phase 2 : A Thirst for Knowledge

“Education isn’t just about degrees; it’s about the love for learning and the courage to think differently. T hat is what truly sets you apart.”

Dr. Sanjeev Raina’s education was shaped by a mix of formal academics, intellectual curiosity, and life experiences that extended beyond the classroom. Growing up in the 1990s, he witnessed an education system where students attended college for higher secondary education instead of completing their 11th and 12th grades in school. This early transition into a college environment helped him develop independence, adaptability, and responsibility at a young age.

One of the most defining influences on his education came not from a school or college but from a gift from his father—the Bhagavad Gita. Though his father had never read the book himself, he instinctively knew its potential to shape a young mind. Along with the Gita, his father also gave him a Blackie’s Dictionary, which became a fundamental part of his learning process.

At first, the Bhagavad Gita was simply another book, but as Dr. Sanjeev Raina began reading it, he realized it was much more than a religious text. It was a philosophical guide that shaped his thoughts, personality, and approach to life. The language, however, was complex, and many words were unfamiliar. Determined to understand it fully, he developed a habit of reading the Bhagavad Gita with the Blackie’s Dictionary beside him, looking up every difficult word and slowly building his English vocabulary and comprehension skills. Over time, this practice gave him a strong command over English, which would later prove invaluable in both academics and professional life.

Beyond language skills, the Bhagavad Gita also gave him mental clarity and emotional resilience. It taught him detachment from outcomes, the importance of duty, and perseverance in the face of challenges. No matter how difficult life became, he found solace in its teachings, using them as a guiding force through various obstacles.

Academically, Dr. Sanjeev Raina was not an extraordinary student but consistently performed above average, scoring around 70 percent. While he diligently studied subjects required for his courses, his real strength lay in his curiosity, creativity, and philosophical outlook on life. He was deeply interested in nature, human behaviour, and intellectual discussions, often thinking beyond the rigid structure of formal education.

His friendships played a crucial role in shaping his academic and creative journey. He had a strong circle of friends, many of whom shared his interest in literature and critical thinking. One of his closest friends, Mr. Sunil Raina, aspired to write an English novel, and Dr. Sanjeev Raina would spend hours brainstorming ideas, discussing characters, and analysing plots with him. These interactions helped him develop critical thinking skills, articulate ideas clearly, and engage in deep intellectual conversations. For him, education was never just about scoring well in exams—it was about learning, exploring ideas, and enjoying the process of intellectual growth.

Phase 3 : Professional Life

“My journey began with teaching, where I learned that knowledge grows only when shared. Later, stepping into the corporate world, I realized that leadership is about empowering others.”

Dr. Sanjeev Raina’s journey into the professional world was not a conventional one. Having started with a strong foundation in civil engineering, his early aspirations were centered around environmental studies and sustainability. He had planned to pursue a master’s degree in ecology and environmental sciences, envisioning a career that blended engineering with nature. However, life had other plans for him.

The 1990s were a turbulent time in Kashmir, and like many others, Dr. Sanjeev Raina found himself in a situation where continuing his education as planned was no longer possible. The prevailing unrest forced him to leave his academic pursuits midway, an unexpected setback that could have easily discouraged him. However, he did not let these obstacles define his future. Instead, he remained determined to build a meaningful career despite the disruptions.

It was during this period of transition that Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) opened its doors to him in 1991. At first glance, it was a drastic shift from his academic background, as he had not originally envisioned himself in the oil and gas sector. However, the opportunity presented itself at the right time, and he made the decision to embrace the change rather than resist it.

The transition from civil engineering to the oil and gas industry was not easy. The learning curve was steep, and he had to quickly adapt to an industry that operated on entirely different principles than what he had studied. However, a valuable piece of advice from a senior colleague became a guiding principle for him: “Job satisfaction is key. Whatever you do, do it with love.” These words deeply resonated with him. Instead of focusing on what he had left behind, he chose to dedicate himself fully to his new role, learning everything he could about the industry.

Being posted at such a high-stakes facility meant that Dr. Sanjeev Raina was immediately exposed to an intense and dynamic work environment. The scale of operations at Kandla was massive, and he had to quickly familiarize himself with the complexities of managing a facility that played such a vital role in India’s fuel supply network. From the outset, he encountered a range of technical, logistical, and managerial challenges that pushed him to sharpen his skills and adapt to the fast-paced nature of the oil and gas industry.

"As the journey nears its horizon, the greatest chapter begins—the chapter of giving back with grace and vision."
