The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and for Dr. Chandra, that pivotal step was taken in 1994 when he embarked on his professional career as a Geotechnical Engineer and Environmental Site Assessment. His early experiences would not only shape his expertise but also lay the groundwork for his future as a leader in the field of geotechnical engineering.
Fresh out of university, armed with theoretical knowledge and an insatiable curiosity for the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering, Dr. Chandra joined Ferro Alloys Corporation-Boula Chromite Mines, Odisha in India. This period proved to be an invaluable training ground, exposing him to the intricacies of engineering geological mapping, slope stability analysis, and site investigations. These initial years were crucial in bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world applications.
His role at Boula Mines involved working in both underground and open-cast mining operations, where he honed his skills in rock mass analysis, soil mechanics, and geotechnical instrumentation. Conducting in-situ tests, monitoring slope movements, and evaluating rock and soil stability became part of his daily responsibilities. It was in these rugged and demanding mining environments that he developed a deep appreciation for the complexities of geological formations and their impact on construction and excavation projects.
One of his significant contributions during this period was his work on slope stability projects, where he meticulously analysed the risks associated with mine slopes and tailings dams. His ability to interpret geological data and apply engineering principles effectively led to improved safety protocols and operational efficiencies.
The mining industry posed numerous challenges, from unpredictable geological conditions to demanding project deadlines, but Dr. Chandra’s meticulous approach and problem-solving abilities made him an invaluable asset to the organization.
Beyond the technical aspects, these formative years at Ferro Alloys Corporation also taught him the importance of teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration. Ltd. & Aqualia Ltd, three prominent engineering firms that specialized in large-scale infrastructure projects. This move marked the beginning of an era where his skills would be applied to a diverse array of engineering challenges beyond the mining sector.
During his tenure in Mauritius, Dr. Chandra was entrusted with managing and executing complex geotechnical projects across roads, tunnels, bridges, airports, and power plants. The transition from mining to large-scale civil infrastructure required him to adapt and expand his technical expertise. He quickly became proficient in foundation engineering, tunnelling techniques, soil stabilization, and seismic hazard assessment.
The early stages of Dr. Chandra’s career were characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence, an eagerness to embrace new challenges, and an ability to adapt to different geotechnical landscapes.
