It is not a biography; this is a blueprint for those who would love to leave a meaningful mark on the world.

Phase 1 : A Journey of Resilience, Family, and Vision

On that chilly winter morning of November 22, 1978, in the city of Bathinda, Punjab, there was a new birth that would create its special mark not only in the community but also in the professional world of the man. Dr. Sachin Garg was warmly enveloped in this world by his close-knit family and the hype that defines his street. The story is about one with tenacity in it due to the well-founded values sown by his parents.

His father was a man of grit and determination; in fact, a self-made businessman who rose from really humble beginnings. Working out of a small shop, he carved out a niche for himself in the wholesale surgical supplies industry through hard work. The rise was not easy, but the lesson for perseverance tells in itself. This ethic of hard work seriously influenced the young Dr. Sachin, who often looked up to his father as a prime example of what one can achieve with resolve.

While the father’s main focus was mostly on building the business, his mother played a different but no less impactful role. A compassionate homemaker, she wasn’t content with just caring for her family. She showered kindness not only to their house but quietly and persistently helped elevate many families in need. Her focus on the underprivileged, guiding them towards a better life and importantly, a future became her motive. Her compassion for society and love has etched her mark on Dr. Sachin, giving him the realization of the importance of giving back to others.

Great pleasure and a memory to cherish. Bathinda, where he grew up in a big house, was for the same amount of time, the playground and classroom for Dr. Garg. The creaky lanes are full of the joy of childhood for the childhood mind of Dr. Sachin and his friends playfully dreamt to make the impossible possible. Here he learned the significance of friendship and the community and took these lessons back with him for a lifetime.

He began formal education at the DAV Public School. There, he did not just occupy a chair in the class but was a shining superstar on the stage. Drama, theatre, and school activities were something that lit a spark in young Dr. Sachin, who bloomed under the limelight. Performed before people would later include giving him confidence and the concept of communication—a competency that would later be of great aid to him in his career in the corporate world.

If ever there was a thesis title that would sum up the academic journey of Dr. Sachin Garg- ‘Love Affair with Numbers and Finance’ does just that, but it goes an obvious way in defining his incredible presence on and off the stage, and outside the classroom too. Since as early as he can remember, he had interests beyond textbooks; the things that he was attracted to were those that were challenging him in their creative sense and truly made him push limits.

It was during his school days that Dr. Garg showed interest in finance and marketing, which would eventually shape his career. He started developing an innate fascination for commerce and took pleasure in the mechanism of business and economics. However, it wasn’t all about books. The stage became a second home, which allowed him to tap into creativity and bring characters to life through drama and performances.

Given his colorful personality, so was his childhood/life dotted with some remarkably great teachers and mentors who guided the development of his character, aspiration, and perception of things. Their wisdom and guidance have been etched quite significantly in his personal and academic life.

The two most remarkable teachers during the school days were Ms. Kavita Singla, a passionate biology teacher whose love for science became very contagious. The deep knowledge and interesting teaching method left an impression on him, filled the young Dr. Garg with curiosity and love for the natural world, and another very significant role player is Ms. Manjinder Kalsi of chemistry, whose patience and dedication helped the young Dr. Garg cross all the above complexities. She was not only a teacher but also a mentor to him, teaching the importance of perseverance, discipline, and hard work.

Phase 2 : A Leap to the Banking World: Get Ready to Begin

One such experience that defined and drove Dr. Sachin Garg into the banking world was a very crucial moment in his career. Fresh from his MBA, with the thirst to prove himself and take on new challenges, it was early 2000 when HDFC came down to his campus for recruitment. Like any other youngster at that time, he also prepared with lots of hard work, revising financial ratios, management strategies, and so on, along with being aware of the industry. However, the real examination was yet to be faced.

At that time, HDFC was opening a new branch at Bathinda, and they were looking for more than numbers or bookish knowledge. They wanted someone with practical thinking skills and who would help the branch grow. Dr. Sachin was shortlisted, and during his interview, he was told that he might be placed in the new branch and asked what he would do. He recalls that it wasn’t just about answerable theoretical questions. They wanted someone who would really make a difference for them.

Before HDFC, ICICI had also called him, but they had only offered him a contractual job and a salary of Rs. 8,000. Although it may sound modest nowadays, in 2000, it was big money for a young student fresh out of college. He recalls being grilled during his interview about HDFC’s market share, value, and a host of other financial numbers. To his surprise, Dr. Sachin knew all of this by heart the value of the bank to its market position. They were impressed and even found themselves joking, asking him if he was joining as an officer of a higher grade, knowing he was so well-equipped. One of the interviewers, Anand Mahendru, quipped, ‘This man will grow in life.

This experience stayed with him for the following 24 years, a reminder of appreciation and acclamation right at the beginning of his career.

The interview did not just comprise knowledge, however. The panel presented before him a practical case study — how to develop a new branch’s business. At that time, the year was 2002, and banking was almost being restricted to its known traditions of fixed deposits (FDRs) and other deposit schemes. However, Dr. Sachin was different from those ideas. The man had an idea ahead of his times—bringing banking services to the house of the customer. Something which was radical for them because home banking hadn’t evolved much. Dr. Sachin’s idea reflected his forward-thinking outlook—a mind-set to follow well in his career.

Dr. Sachin told how he was managing collections and orders from doctors and chemists while working in his father’s wholesale surgical business during graduation. His relations, negotiation skills, and understanding of the needs of the clients while working in the business of his father gave him a perfect grip in the interview. Therefore, when the panel asked how this experience would translate to banking, Dr. Sachin confidently explained his visits to clients—understanding their needs and offering competitive comparisons that would help grow the bank’s business.

This was just a stepping stone for Dr. Sachin’s journey with HDFC, in which he spent nearly two decades of his tenure. The kind of confidence, innovation, and practical knowledge that was portrayed so early in his career was only a glimpse of the future leader he was going to be.

Phase 3 : Professional Development & Devotion to Financial Inclusion

Dr. Garg had completed his Master’s in Business Administration and had a career spanning over 18 years with HDFC Bank after joining. His exemplary career, starting from contractual to that of Senior Assistant Vice President, was a testament to his dedication and leadership potential.

At HDFC Bank, Dr. Garg has worked in various functions, with varying grades of responsibility: from a General Teller Authorizer to a Personal Banker, then to a Relationship Manager, and eventually, to the prestigious position of a Branch Manager. He has travelled to a lot of cities, Muktsar, Barnala, and Mansa, and Managed teams and operations, with a seamless banking experience for the communities.

It was in 2019 that Dr Garg, after nearly two decades in HDFC Bank, moved to a new challenge of heading clusters at IndusInd Bank. There he spent one year managing multiple locations in southwest Punjab and deepened his knowledge of banking and financial services. However, he yearned to make a lasting mark, and in doing so led him to an important decision in 2020: he decided to leave the corporate world and start his own venture driven by the vision of contributing to society in a more meaningful way.

The entrepreneurial journey of Dr. Garg began with microfinance, targeting the target group in extending financial services to the marginalized sections. From his mother’s gesture in helping those in need, he particularly focused on serving the rural and below-poverty line groups, such as rickshaw pullers, street hawkers, and domestic helpers. The result was that these persons, who were part of joint liability groups, could get access to funds that made them better off and helped in achieve financial stability over time.

Apart from his microfinance work, Dr. Garg continued to study to acquire diverse skills. He holds a Certified Financial Planning course. This is one of the most prestigious American-based programs, with only about 300 certified professionals existing in India. This enables him to specialize in financial planning and portfolio management and provide total financial services to his customers.

Currently, Dr. Garg is working as a Mortgage Specialist and Financial Planning Specialist. He is devoted to helping people manage their finances and secure their futures with his vast experience. Outside his professional activities, he is still deeply involved in social causes. Currently, he works with two to three organizations in Bathinda, where he participates in many activities involving the underprivileged. He continues on his mission from way back to help them out.

Besides the traditional skills, Dr. Sachin advises students to imbibe some of the recently advanced technologies, more specifically AI. He reiterates that AI should become a constituent of their professional skill set; for example, he explains it would increase productivity and effective performance while drafting letters or smoothening projects using AI, according to him, as one of the significant tools to get better results.

By doing so, Dr. Sachin creates a future for the students he is teaching while working towards the greater development of the financial sectors of India.
